Title: The Sound of Music as a Wargame
Post by: Bogdanwaz on 23 May 2015, 09:24:27 PM
Yes, I will be running a wargame based on The Sound of Music.  This will be the third annual musical-based wargame that my son and I will be running at Historicon.  There's some pictures on my blog:

What a brilliantly mad idea.  I love the terrain.

And thanks for the brief on the film, now I need never watch it.   lol

In Salzburg they hated the film so much that it was never televised until recently and the route they took at the end was going the wrong way, still, Hollywood never lets the truth get in the way of a film.........

Excellent work.  My wife used the word "Cool" to describe it which is a rarity for anything wargame related.

This is very, very, very silly. I love it! Your terrain is just perfect.

I have the feeling I should say this sotto voce in the present crowd, but I've always loved the film, though generally I find musicals pretty hard to take. (Watched South Pacific for the first time a few months ago and found it a real stinker...)

There was a game a few years ago (not TSoM, but based on Korea) where the umpires gave a dice modifier if the players could think of a suitable song for the action. (Bigger modifier if it was actually sung by the player).
They only allowed 1950s/1960s songs and they had to have lyrics or a title that applied to the situation.
eg the opponents were wading a river, so the defenders suggested that some of them might get struck down by vicious leeches - Sinatra's song "I've got you under my skin" gave a dice roll.
In the counter attack, they avoided the leeches by going for "Moon River" (crossing you in style)

Wonderful stuff. I do so love that film. Fighting Nazism via the medium of song. The only thing that tops it is fighting Nazism by doing really hard sums, as they did at Bletchley Park.

If you like submarines I would advise you to pick up Georg von Trapp's war memoirs. I found them to be most interesting, and often rather funny. There is no singing, though.

...

My understanding is that his games, you need a reward to STOP people from singing.   ;)

I dunno; this may have too many painful childhood memories for me to face on the table.   :'(

Bloody good! Great concept. It is weird though, it's probably the only situation I can think of where one hopes the Nazis will win.

That was the first movie I was ever taken to.. Had just started speaking and every time the nazis came on the screen I would yell "Postman!  Postman!"
