Title: Lone Wolf fantasy range from Minifigs
Post by: Rhoderic on 01 June 2015, 06:24:20 PM
Partly in response to a question in the "Latest Mini Received" thread and partly to give a deserving range some more exposure, here are some comparison shots of the Kai Lords from Minifigs' relatively new "Joe Dever's Lone Wolf" fantasy range, with various other fantasy and historical miniatures I had in reach. The range is being marketed as 32mm, but as you can see, it's really an eminently sensible 28mm that mixes well with most other ranges in the comfortable "middle ground" of 25-32mm.

A few of the popular fantasy manufacturers are conspicuously absent from these photos, notably Reaper. Sorry about that. If anyone wants to amend the fact that I don't own any Reaper figures, feel free to send me yours ;)

From left to right: Black Hat (their Chinese fantasy range) - Ral Partha Europe (the "Das Schwarze Auge" range) - Minifigs Lone Wolf - Battleline - Foundry historical - Minifigs Lone Wolf - Artizan - Perry - Minifigs Lone Wolf - Heresy - Eureka.

From left to right: Copplestone Castings - Sgt Major (range formerly owned by Vendel) - Scotia Grendel (the old not-LotR fantasy range formerly owned by Black Tree) - Minifigs Lone Wolf - Black Tree historical - Hasslefree - Black Tree fantasy - Minifigs Lone Wolf - Foundry fantasy (elf) - Bronze Age (this one's proper 32mm!) - Gripping Beast.

In retrospect I should have taken 3-4 photos with fewer figures in a row. The original photos were larger but were automatically resized as I uploaded them to the LAF user gallery.

Thanks for the info.  I always loved Lone Wolf and was wondering about these minis.

Glad to have been of help!

I'm fond of Lone Wolf too, mainly for reasons of childhood nostalgia. I still think that the Kai Lords are one of the best takes on unambiguous good guys in traditional fantasy. They're like a medieval fantasy version of Jedi knights with their combination of fighter skills, ranger skills and low-level cleric/wizard skills. There's something quaintly romantic about their hallmark forest-green cloaks and yellow sun emblem, too. Admittedly the figures can look like bog-standard human adventurers to those who are not familiar with the setting, but when I look at them I see Kai Lords and all the special things associated with them.

Nice collection of miniatures!

I am on the nostalgia train as well. Loved the gamebooks in childhood, particularly those with excellent illustrations by Gary Chalk. I've read one or two Lone Wolf gamebooks again while ill at home just a year ago - and enjoyed them still a lot :)
