Title: Tarim basin turks in 28mm anyone?
Post by: Arrigo on 03 June 2015, 07:16:41 PM
I am thinking to get some Tang 28mm cavalry from The Assault Group, do anyone does some decent looking eastern Turkish style cavalry I can use as opponents? It is a small fancy project I will do using Ronin thus just few miniatures are sufficient. Mass armies will follow in 15mm... otherwise I will just do it in 15mm using Lion Rampant and larger sets.

Good luck, I've never found any that worked for me. I'm contemplating doing some Uighur and Sha-t'o Turk sculpts but its strictly back burner stuff. Not that wild about the TAG T'ang line but it remains pretty much the best of what I've seen.

Incidentally, if your looking to replicate a truly first class T'ang bloodbath look into the Huang Ch'ao rebellion, infinitely more brutal than the more famous An Lu-shan fiasco. Unlike the An Lu-shan rebellion there's very little in the way of poetry to memorialize it, since most of the literati were translated into impromptu dog food in wreck of Ch'ang-an.

thanks for the tips,

after a night of thinking (and sleeping) I decided to go for the 15mm road. As much I like the TAG sculpts (and could have done something like sui vs Tang) Ronin is not suited to what I want to do (I need at least a lion Rampant size force and at the moment it is too expensive... turned out from another post-doc position... ).

Armies of the post-An Lush-an years get a bad, undeserved rap (check out any of the few army lists that attempt to cover them). While it's true that the Shence (imperial capitol) armies only rarely confronted the almost autonomous regional commanders in the North East and North West, that was more often an issue of economics or imperial reluctance rather than competence. In ferocity they were second to none, often eating (yes, eating) a cowardly or otherwise unpopular commander.

Arrigo, you might want to check out Aventine ' new Steppe Cavalry line. I think they'd be usable with some very minor adjustments.

Congratulations on the job! I'm thinking of frankensteining Aventine's Steppe and Sassanid lines to create a "Turanian" army from the Shah Namah, getting away from the Tahmasp paintings look to something more "authentic" (whatever that means in this context). I've never found a Timurid/Timurid Successor line that I liked.
