Title: Running Press 1/50th scale Gi Joe Cobra HISS Tank (comparison of the RP and AS)
Post by: Katsuhiko JiNNai on June 13, 2015, 05:49:56 PM
While surfing on the web I've found this review about a Running Press Hiss Tank (price $12.95):

http://www.yojoe.com/archive/nottoys/14hisstank.shtml

The scale should be about 1/50th scale. Somebody have yet bought it and seen if it fine for 28mm miniatures? Thanks

$13?! Even if it's a touch small, I'll take a half dozen!

You can find it here:

If the tank have a good scale, it could be a really cheap alternative for our cobra armies ;)
Unfortunatelly it is available just in the U.S.A. so for european buyers, like me, the shipping cost (and customs) will kill us :(

Book Depository is shipping from the Uk for £3.79 plus £2.80 postage - which makes me doubt that 1/50 claim! (Edit: but I see that one review describes it as "approx 2" [50mm] tall and just shy of 3" [75mm long".)

Could be of the box though, you never know with those sites. Some reviewers state is
"a tad bigger" and "in scale with" hot wheels and matchbox cars, which could mean closer to 1/64.

Going by how big it looks in the hand, I'd say too small.

Maybe I will consider to buy one just to be sure, if the scale is not fine enough I will use it as a nice small toy in my vintage collection ;)

Meanwhile, I've found some interesting pictures for size comparison (from a topic in joecustoms forum) and I've done a photo of my vintage hiss tank and stinger too.

Here the final size comparison, some pictures given from a nice guy (two GW miniatures, a reaper miniature and a copplestone casting miniature):

The Runningpress Hiss tank is closer to 1/72.
Here it is with a Zvezda miniature posing as Storm Shadow
(http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w42/Redmao/6D4E1DCB-FE0F-4B4B-9169-6DC8548F4B67_zpseppxvbef.jpg) (http://s173.photobucket.com/user/Redmao/media/6D4E1DCB-FE0F-4B4B-9169-6DC8548F4B67_zpseppxvbef.jpg.html)

1/72 figures with small bases even fit in the turret.

In theory yes, but this RP tank should be about the same size of the Arctic Skunk tank (a little taller too). White knight has done a comparison photo, using his vintage gi joe VAMP vehicle with the AS tank and the comparison size done in the review video. The original hiss tank toy was a small tank, not really a main battle tank. I've ordered one, when it will arrive I will do some photos with my cobra troopers ;)

Here's two more shots.

First with a Heroclix Batman, a Copplestone agent and a 1/72 soldier

A top cockpit shot.

Hello all, just created an account to post on this topic, so apologies if this doesn't show up right.

They're a little small for 28mm.

And here's a pic alongside the HISS mini-drones.

But the size it should be the same that the Arctic skunk tank, so the AS is small too. However if it is too small I will use as a toy and play with it ;)

White knight bought one too, so he could do a comparison size with his Arctic skunk hiss tank.

I'd be very happy with that for my 20mm stuff tbh....not that I can come even close to affording them from Amazon. Maybe I'll get lucky and find them at the toy store soon  lol

I found my in a bookstore.
The light feature is pretty strong and I think my wife got tired of hearing the PEW PEW sound coming out of my office :)

I think they're fine on the table for 28mm; my skinnier 28s would fit in the gun pit.

My Running Press hiss tank is arrived. Here some photos with my miniatures. Personally I think it is PUUUUURfect! The size is good if you want a small hiss tank as the toy version, nice for 28mm miniatures, maybe less for heroic scale miniatures (or maybe not). I tried to include a driver too, it seem fine. I just need to do some easy conversions to the driver and it will fit well. Seem that this tank was done for our miniatures. If somebody like a bigger hiss tank, it is available (as many yet know) the heroic scale version by Arctic Skunk. He has done 15mm, 28mm and heroic scale versions.

Some notes:
- The arctic skunk tank is the non-heroic version, so if you're looking for bigger, the heroic version may work for you,
- It's hard to tell which is bigger or smaller. The AS tank has a longer and ever so slightly wider body, but the RP one has added height. The canopy seems to be about the same size on both, with the RP one being wider at the front and the AS one slimmer in the front but wider in the back (so more V-shaped). Estimated cockpit size seems similar.
- In some places, the AS one has more detail than the RP one (e.g. the nose detail, the more accurate guns, the front of the suspension/lower body), but in other places it is the other way around (clear canopy for the cockpit, track mechanism (though the AS details are certainly sufficient to give the right impression),....

So really, there is no clear winner here, both have their merits.

I'd say the winner is the person who owns both so he can have double the fun :)
I think that the RP's advantage is the price. $13 vs $46.

That would be me then. ;)

But it's also a dilemma as to which one to use, as they're not really compatible. Unless I do one as Cobra and one as Red Shadows.
