Title: First attempt at pulp figure photographs
Post by: gamer Mac on October 20, 2008, 11:24:38 PM
I have not painted normal human figures for a while. Been painting various 40k aliens. Never photographed my figures before. The first figures I photographed showed up a lot of extra faults. This is my first attempt.

What do you think?
Any advice welcome

How many megapixels is the camera? Instead of using the macro function, you might eb better off standing a bit further back and zooming in.

Also, I would have a strong light source, and possibly white. But use whatever you've got around really :) There's tutes on creating photo "boxes" for miniatures.

Yep, they look real good.  Especially like the unshaven adventurer on the left.

As for the photo, you can improve by using a better background, a bit better lighting and maybe using the sharpness correction to bring out more detail if your photo software permits.  A couple small improvements can make a huge difference in presentation.

But I'd say you are definitely on the right track.  My first mini photos were horrible.

Like painting, photography improves with practice.

Thanks for the comments.
The crates are not that good they were another first attempt. They are not quite finished yet. I made them out of balsa wood, square section, with thin balsa for the edging. The open crates were filled with bits made out of modelling clay. I think there already is a tutorial on the forum somewhere.

I like the figure good stuff.

The little details are starting to stand out for me in pictures now, the crates of fruit are great.

They are great the darker grey and the black leather jacket work very well.

The camo on the helmets is one of my favorite bits. 8)

That color on the holster is very convincing! I never manage to get these glossy leather parts right. Very nice. And the tie kicks butt!

The rest of the zeppelin squad is great and the close up of the officer shows him off well.

As with the rest of us the explorer is great holster and tie  :o

I think it must be 20 mm (compare with the slotta).

The goggles on those gasmasks (zeps) are Phantasmal  :-*  8)

EDIT:

Not to mention the fur on the officer's coat. You must teach me that!

Sorry.
I am an engineer. By 10 mm washer, I mean that is the diameter of the hole through the centre. The outside diameter is probably about 20 mm.

Ah... the 20 mm (outside) washers I get have much smaller holes (5 or 6 mm), so I had no chance of guessing that  lol

I tend to name them by the outside diameter, because when using them as bases, that's what counts for me  :)

Cracking figures, well imagined and very well painted.  The detailing is excellent as the guys have said.  Presume the chap above is an Ibrox season ticket holder from his tie colours? lol
Title: Re: First attempt at pulp figure photographs
Post by: gamer Mac on November 21, 2008, 01:05:48 PM
No definitely not a season ticket holder. I am not interested in that football thing.
Very deliberately picked red, yellow and blue not red, white and Blue. You have to be careful in this town (Glasgow).
It is supposed to be based on a REME tie I used to have.

My apologies.  I'm a Dynamo Ungern man myself

No need for apologies.
I am sorry but I don't know who Dynamo Ungern are. As I said not into the footbal thing.
