Title: How often do you play?
Post by: SBRPearce on 01 July 2015, 03:14:42 PM
Simple question for the members and guests: How often do you get to sit down at the table and actually move minis/roll dice?

Like most people, I have a chronic case of Real Life which limits the amount of time I get to spend on my hobbies.

Barring zombicide, not played in the past 2 years.
Zombicide - with the wife - on and off around once a month.

I run a school club, so in term time I get to game once a week with them (although I'm usually umpiring/running games rather than playing), but then I've joined a local club in town that meets Mondays and Thursdays, so I usually go there 4-5 times a month. Don't always get a game in - generally about 1/2 or 2/3 of the evenings I attend. Quite a busy club - sometimes there are over 40 players (and it's not the only club in town, although it does have a bar).
If I'm lucky I get to 7 or 8 shows a year and generally try to get a game in at most shows.

Three to four times per month on the average. Once a week is what we manage when everything else goes smooth; at the moment, with the house move, we haven't had a game for several weeks. But that's going to change soon!

Not that often atm. I play board games and RPG's more often than wargames at the LGS. I do play x wing once every few months atm though.
Title: Re: How often do you play?

Once a month usually. I spend the time between games putting together a load of new models that by the time I actually play I wind up pulling out enough for different looking board or set of soldiers. If I played more often then I suppose turning up one week with a bunch of new stuff wouldn't have quite the same effect if it were more of a trickle.

Although I belong to a gaming club who meets Mondays, between work and RL probably average once per month, on a good one up to three times. Also try to fit in a fortnightly Pathfinder session.
Title: Re: How often do you play?

My regular opponent (The Voivod) and I aim at getting a game in every Wednesday evening, obviously barring real-life interference. Mostly Infinity or X-Wing of late, but 'officially', we also play Dropzone Commander, Warmachine, Necromunda, Bloodbowl and 40K, although none of those games have seen the table for at least a year.

And then there's games we haven't even started on. like Saga, Gorkamorka, Battlefleet Gothic, Flames of War, Battletech etc, etc And of course the (almost) inbound Frostgrave. So many games, so little time... ::)

Also, we have a roleplaying session each Monday evening, for which I tend to make a lot of scenery and minis as well. If not enough people show up for that, Myth is laid out pretty often too.

So in a perfect month, we should manage about 8 games, if you count the roleplaying as proper miniature games.

I always though we were pretty starved for games here, but seeing the overall reactions, I'd rather say we're actually pretty much spoiled!

Then again; all that gaming does get in the way of proper building and painting of course... lol

Until the birth of my little un, I used to play on a weekly basis. Hadn't played a dice and figure for probably a year although I've joined in as a 'spare' in the local club's Impetus Campaign so have got a game a month recently.

I play maybe 2-3 times a year, and, even then, with Dave Bickley's figures; which rather begs the question - at what point do you cease to be a gamer and become a collector?
Title: Re: How often do you play?
Post by: Daeothar on 02 July 2015, 11:38:13 AM
Valid question, that.

But I'd rather add a 3rd category to this: Hobbyist...

I've always been more drawn to the modeling and painting side of the hobby anyway, and even though the gaming aspect is still the excuse for me to justify the modeling and painting, the truth is (much like Maxxon admitted), that I would not miss the actual gaming part much, as long as I could still hobby along.

Not that I do not enjoy a good game, on the contrary, but if I had to choose between an evening of gaming or an evening of modeling and painting, I know what I'd pick most of the time. Still; it's nice to have a purpose for all the fiddly stuff I enjoy.

As for being a collector; what does a collector make? I would say that a collector would be somewhat methodical in his acquisitions, i.e. trying to complete a certain line of miniatures, or the work of a certain sculptor, or at least something like that. And then displays his (bare metal?) miniatures en-masse in display cabinets.

Someone buying and stashing every mini he can get his hands on is more of a Hoarder I suppose (yet another category?), whilst I still see myself as a gamer to begin with, when it comes to my acquisitions, as I will only buy the stuff I have an intended purpose for in one of the games I play (or want to play ::) ), even though my focus is on modeling and painting.

Muddy waters, but when being honest, I'm sure everyone could categorize themselves pretty easily.

Hello, my name is Daeothar, and I'm a Hobbyist... :D

Don't want to derail the topic but use of the term Hobbyist with a capital might incur some sort of IP infringement...

I never considered the modelling and painting aspect of the games I play as a particularly fun aspect of what I do. It was a means to an end. That being said, this was probably in most part down to my lack of self esteem re my painting skills.

Recently though, despite having not played much, I still find myself putting together stuff for a large number of projects. I find fun in the 'background' of games. The setting, theme, mood, and background all add to my enjoyment of a game. Perhaps that's all part of my starting the slippery slope of wargaming obsession through roleplaying as a young kid. It was about the story and events on the table as well as outcome of win or loss.

So yeah, back to the point of the topic. I might only play once a month or so but the planning takes up a lot more than that few hours of actual gaming.

For the last two years its getting fewer and fewer. If its 12 times a year its a lot.
My gaming buddies left town, lost interest, get busy with family, work or discover other hobbies.
I must also admit, that I did so much wargaming during the past 15 years that I see this little drought also as a motor to get slowly back into new wargaming things. I didnt give up miniatures painting.

I probably get 3-4  proper table top games against an opponent in year, normally average about 6 games a year if I include solo games and zombicide.... Now, if you count reenacting as 1:1 wargaming, that number goes up at bit! ;-)

Just spent six hours playing at school (off-timetable day).
Six player Napoleonic game, with 24 battalions of infantry, 8 sloops, 2 squadrons cavalry and a few guns. (battalions of 24-40 figures each, so quite a big game)
L-shaped table roughly 12 feet square.

Further 'derailing' ahead:

I was playing RPG's for over 20 years before I took the plunge and I'm almost exclusively a skirmish game player. I do enjoy painting my miniatures but only do a quick job because I want to get a game in too :). Struggled for a few years at the club to get people to play 'my' games (mainly post-apocalyptic and old west) as they were more slanted towards the historical/ 'a certain company' ones, but have now found a guy or two that are more than willing to play whatever 'madness and flavour of the week' we can possibly muster.

Don't get to play/ paint so much, it goes in spurts depending on energy and time disposable, but certainly always have an idea or three going for games/ scenarios/ backgrounds/ fluff etc.

The club goers have seen Teddybears fighting Dinosaurs, Zombie survival, up-scaled Car Wars, superheroes and villains duking it out, Lovecraftian horror and much more this year only and we are positively embracing 'as long as you are having FUN, it doesn't matter what you play!!!'

I can identify with you.  I think it is a habit that I can't break.  I tidied the shed the other day and found enough lead and plastic to cover the debt of a small country.......

I have, however, curbed my spending this year and only went to two very local shows.

Never. Really rather pointless to continue, and sometimes I wish I could just walk away.

I haven't played a game in several years, a change in career has had me hopping about all over the place. I channelled my interests elsewhere in the hobby though, so instead of churning out badly-painted figures and being the guy my opponents won against, I do more research and rule-mongering. One day I hope to get back to painting and playing... Indeed I want to, but for the time being it just isn't possible.

I've never wanted to walk away myself, but I can sympathise with someone who feels they might as well.

I'm in a club, so generally we play once a week, apart from when we don't and just chat and look at toys instead.

At weekend gaming events, I play and run quite a few games, but theses days I only do one of those a year. I also run games at shows, again less than I used to.

Cheers

Wise words indeed Scurv. Glad you are still here amongst us to follow them!

I average 2 gaming days a month. Depends on the family plans as our club generally meets for some game every Saturday. RPG, skirmish, or campaigns for WWII to WAB there is usually some miniature game to join in.

Haven't done since I was a teenager, TBH. So far as I know, there aren't any gaming groups in my immediate area, and between gas prices and my car needing a new clutch, I'm not in much state for driving to neighboring towns/cities regularly.

I keep at it mostly 'cause I'm a modeler regardless, and gaming stuff offers a lot of variety and bang-for-buck on that end. Plus I enjoy the challenge of balancing looks and playability, even if the possibility of actually playing isn't on the table, as it were.

My last IRL exposure to a gaming group was a trip to a "local" (45-minute round-trip) gaming store a few years ago. It was a... demoralizing sight: all-male crowd of the appallingly "hygienically challenged" sort, playing with half-painted minis on bare green felt with only the very rare piece of shop loaner terrain. Said terrain was mostly of the sad, flimsy, one-note variety clearly built by someone who resents both the effort and the idea. The hygiene thing... how does a person even LET themselves get like that? I could not get within three meters of some parts of the tables for the smell.

I'd love to find a good local gaming group to socialize with... but not like that. Oh dear, sweet Shai Hulud, not like that.

Probably 4 - 6 times a month. I am recording my games this year and in May I played a record breaking (for me) 11 games, though I was play testing a campaign game.

I play a mix of figure and boardgames. My collections aim at smaller set-ups and shorter rule systems, so it is easier to get something onto the table for a couple of hours, making a mid-week game possible.

I also have a regular opponent which maintains a discipline of regular play (2 - 3 times a month).

My gaming had reduced and I wondered why in my early twenties I did more gaming, managed a mid-week game, had two kids and worked overtime to get the money in - I decided the difference between then and now was the computer.

I had got to a point where I had defaulted into just crashing in front of the computer for the evening and doing aimless browsing around and that just eats time for no result, so I set about deliberately getting into a discipline of gaming more and doing the computer thing less.

I have a core group of guys here that I game with "regularly". They meet about twice a week sometimes more, but I only make it to game about twice a month. I work different hours than most of the guys I game with. I do spend a lot of time painting minitures & building models.

30 years ago... a full days gaming every fortnight, 9am-5pm local wargames club, mega games 20-40 people Waterloo, Austerlitz, Midway...
15 years ago... moved to Newark (aka the Home of Wargaming), went to the Irregulars every week, drank lots of coffee and talked to some really top blokes, but didn't play a lot of games
8 years ago... discovered online forums, Frothers and LAF...regained my mojo, gaming became more of a social thing, all weekend games with mates, attended more shows. got a wargamse room big enough to hold a game OR build stuff. Enjoyed the building, and so ended up playing few games, but building lots.
1 year ago... lucky enough to get my dream games room - have room for a mega game, or two normal games, plus painting station, scratch building etc. Back to playing regular games couple of times a month (mostly now with my kids), and my megalomania goes from one degree of madness to another....

Most weeks I'm able to fit in a Friday night game - we have a group of about 8 gamers, and while its rare for all to be available together, it's nearly always possible to find someone who's available for a game. About 4 of the group have space to host, and two have very big permanent tables.

And maybe a couple of times a year we manage a weekend away, and a couple of full day games on bank holidays.

I suppose that as the Original Poster, I should chime in too:

My wife and I play board games one night a month with another couple, which usually includes Zombicide. Other than that, I maybe get to play 3-4 times a year - at a buddy's house, or hosting my nephew over, or at the "nano-con" we organize semi-occasionally.

While I haven't gotten to paint or build terrain in over a year, I've successfully resisted pressure to get rid of my (admittedly small) collection of figures. If they stay out of sight on the workshop shelves, they don't draw the wife's attention. She's keen on "simplifying" the house, which means, mostly, getting rid of any project I'm not actively working on at that moment.
