Title: WIP Windows

Becaus I couldn't found some suitable windows for my "1920s-colliery-city-project". I'd have to do it on my own... So I took out some balsawood, a ruler, my scalpel-blade and glue.

I started with a frame:

Finally I will do moulds to get my output a bit more fast - at the moment around three hours for five windows...

from experience. use latex for molds like this. much quicker and easier. also USE LOTS of spray release or Vaseline. other wise you will pull your windows apart with the latex and you wont be able to cast into them properly.

Finished the prototypes of windows, doors and some shutters, hopefully going to do the molds within this month...

those look great. Why dont you seal them then cast them in resin (alumilite). You can knock out all kinds then.

Meanwhile if done a mould. I used a lot of vaseline, but still half of my masterpieces fell apart :'(.

Anyway, then I used some clear resin for my fist casts - which was okay but not that good. I thougth it might be a clever idea for windows, but this resin was too thick. This might have been because I had this resin around for ages, but I don't think so. This ist not a good pic but might give an impression:

For the next casts I used some special fluid resin for casting thin details - and it work really good. You could even see the wood-structre (but not on the pic...).

At the moment I use all of the casts for doing some prototypes of miners houses. I will show my progress in an other treat. I think I will do some new masterpieces for windows useing Elladans windows as a guideline, so I will use plastic sticks - not balsawood.

Oh, those are nice!  I am impressed!

I am curious about the moulding process for scenary projects like this as well.  Does anyone have some tips or links to an article about it?  I am sure there is a "moulding for dummies" out there for folks like me....

Wow!  That was VERY informative.  The Hirst guys have really done a great job with their site (I had not been there in a while).
