Title: Recycled Warbands
Post by: MacavityandMycroft on 14 July 2015, 09:48:31 PM
So, I have a very limited budget for hobbies, and a recent foray into Star Wars:Imperial Assault has been testing it.

I have ordered Frostgrave, and plan to use it to wage wars both in traditional campaign format and in my own home-brewed multi-world fight (SciFi,Superhero,Fantasy).  But what to use for minis?

The Fellowship of the Ring: You've got a Wizard, 4 thieves (or thugs if you must), a Ranger, an Archer, a Man-at-arms (or knight) and a Templar (Gimli).  Find a functional apprentice, and fun times await!

Mice and Mystics: Maginos and Tilda are your wizard and apprentice, you have a thief/treasurehunter, Archer/Ranger, Man-at-arms/Knight in Filch, Lily, and Colin.  Nez is a believable Barbarian, and Rats can fill in as Thugs.  Heck, Cockroaches could work as Imps, with the Centipede or Spider as a Major Demon.

If you have a generous opponent, how about a Star Wars Imperial Warband? Palpatine and Vader as Wizard and Apprentice, and translate the weapons on the others to melee versions.  Stormtroopers=hand weapon, Scout Trooper=Dagger, Heavy Trooper=Crossbowman.  If your collection is like mine, you should have available constructs (droids), and monsters/demons (Wookie, Wampa, Jabba, etc...) heck, I think Boba Fett makes a believable Ranger, myself!

Anyway, these guys (and my superheroes and secret agents) will all get statted out for my inter-dimensional campaign but I wanted to point out that this wonderful sounding new game need not require many additional purchases.

Though the ice toad looks really fun....

I really like the idea of multi use sets of figures to save on budgets and storage.your fellowship idea sounds a good way to go though you may want to start with more hobbits as a starter warband to get the numbers on the table for your initial gold crown allowance, and replace them with the more specialist soldier types as your warband progresses.thanks for the ideas

Absolutely, I don't want to limit my choices by my models or theme too much!  My LoTR figures include numerous goblins, Uruk Hai and Men of Rohan I could sub in safely.

One (of many things) that attracts me about this game, is that it obligates very little in terms of new purchases and I wouldn't want anyone scared away by that thought!

I have also found myself in surprising lack of fantasy miniatures. I have solved it by using my Martial artist collection as wizard (mystical monk from the east), apprentice and plenty of thieves, using my few minis I have mostly as my RPG characters for treasure hunter, barbarian and templar.

Also, I have an idea of using Darth Nihilus and Darth Malak from SWmini I have somewhere as Master and Apprentice. Especially the idea of having Nihilus as Necromancer with Strike Dead and Steal Life spells is appealling.
