Post by: LawnRanger on 16 July 2015, 02:31:16 PM
Hi Lads
Can you tell me your favorite set of Crimean rules for the last 12+ years or we I have been play Principles of War set..a good set of rules but there are a few anomalies which we put up with .. ::)

I/we play  a lost of GdB and British grenadier  and was wondering How "There Are Your Guns ." set of rules are ...Can any of you answer a few questions .
Whats the unit size .. are they 36+ like GdB or 12+fig like BG.
What added factors have they added to make the game more like the Crimean ..

If any of you lads could point me in the direction of another set of Good Crimean rules ..please dont say Black Power just not my cup of tea ..
we play 15mm so we are looking at brigade - divisional game

Happy Gaming LR

You could take a look at the 19th Century Wargaming rules by Neil Thomas- lovely book with historical background and rules for the post Napoleonic era with war/scenario specific detail rules for the individual armies and wars.

Does anybody still play 'Principles of War'? They were pretty popular back in the day.

I still play PoW although nowhere near as often as I would like. Thankfully there is still a decent player base. Can I ask what the anomalies are, I may be able to help sort them out.

We are using our Victorian Steel set for 1848 and 1864 Schleswig Holstein wars based on brigades of 4 8 or 12 company, squadron or guns per brigade.(stands)
If you know your stuff you can classify troops appropriately and all the weapon types you need are covered
They are fast play and simple (like me!)

At my club, we've been using Bloody Big Battles for a lot of 19th century games; mainly FPW, but all sorts of others (using their scenarios).  We are plannign to do a demo of Balaclava in 2mm at my club's show, Warfare, in November.  Having played the scenario through once, it all seems to work well.

Most of our games have been in 15mm, with some in 6mm.  Whatever scale you use, the rules work fine.

Play "Charge of the Light Brigade". You can down load these for free on the yahoo group crimean war list. Have played then for over ten years now.  Kinda old school and more war game rather tthe ultra realistic.  But gives a good feel for the period and national troops act correctly.  More importantly you can get a good game in a reasonable time.
