Title: Justinian Byzantines
Post by: Atheling on 16 July 2015, 05:51:35 PM
Hi,

This army was speed painted inside of three weeks for one of the ye olde WAB weekends that used to take place at Games Workshop HQ run by Rob Broom of Scarab Miniatures fame.

The army is now in possession of a friend in Belgium and has gone to a good home. I know this because every so often he asks me to paint up a new unit for the army. The miniatures come from Gripping Beast and are from their Late Roman, Sassanian/Sassanid and Welsh Kingdoms(!) ranges.

I thought you might enjoy the pics of the force so here we go:

The reign of Justinian is such a colourful era with lots of gaming opportunities, yet sadly underrated by fellow hobbyists.
Very nice paintjobs all around, thanks for sharing.

I quite agree. It was actually the release of the (ye olde) Beyond the Golden Gate WAB supplement that peeked my interest in the  Justinian army.

Only took three weeks to paint them up- they are to wargames standrard.

There are details on how I did it here:

Here:

Here:

And here:

Hope that helps- It's a really quick and simple way of doing horseflesh. You don't get the brilliance of high definition tonality like you do for layering but you could always add an extra highlight or two.

You may have read it already?

Beautiful stuff from a surprisingly opulent (and underserved) age.

Well, there are the Musketeer/Footsore Early Byzantines and i believe that Aventine have some in the pipeline though I could be mistaken in this.

THe GB range is also great.

Beautiful work, I love Byzantines but sadly don't have any at the moment. You are correct, Aventine are working on them now, I am sure Keith said they should be out next year, which just about works in with my army schedule  :)

I think I'm going to wait for Aventine's line. I was so wildly impressed with their Sassanids and Steppe lines, can't wait to see what they'll do for Justinian ' armies. I'm wondering if they'd work for the forces of Heraclius, I doubt there'd of been much material change. Though looking at Darrel's work I'm tempted to start now.
