Title: Awesomeshotdude's Frostgrave Stuff!
Post by: Awesomeshotdude on 23 July 2015, 03:53:15 PM
Just starting my own thread to deposit pics of terrain and mini's as I progress along my Frostgrave journey :)

I became aware of Frostgrave a while before it hit the shelves, so have been working on terrain for a few weeks now. I bought a stack of the 4Ground Mordanburg and Ruins of Daldorr terrain kits and have been working on those first. I also have some Pegasus stuff, Battlefield in a Box stuff and a few other bits and pieces to give a large variety to my game board set-ups.

5 x Ruined Residential Buildings

3 x Small Ruins (will do another 3 Small Ruins as well)

1 x Large Ruins (will do another 3 Large Ruins as well). I'm working on this one at the moment, should be finished in a day or so.

Very nice. I am so tempted to get the 4ground ruins. Especially since they are adding to the ruins line.

Really nice job with the 4Ground stuff. I wasn't sure about it when it was first release, but with a paint job (and a bit of snow) they look terrific.  Nice houses too, I would suspect the were probably found in the merchants quarter!

it seems a shame buying prepainted scenery then repainting it but your ruins look awesome. I like the bases on your timber houses too.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I didn't repaint the ruined houses, but in terms of pre-paint quality, I didn't think the ruins were as well done as the Mordanburg buildings range, and with the painting pretty much just being a grey base coat and then two lighter shades of grey drybrushed on, I thought it was worthwhile doing for the ruins.

With the rest of the Warband having been torn apart in a running fight with a horde of Ghouls, it's left up to the Barbarian to protect the Wizard whilst he works up a magical death storm for the remaining living dead...

I'm happy with how this one turned out...I've now started the next one which should take a couple of days to complete at my slow pace :)

I have to admit, I'm really enjoying working on these 4Ground ruins for Frostgrave...it's a combination of some new, cool looking kits and the great setting of Frostgrave.

The Warband's Ranger has been cornered in a ruined building by two Beastmen..."My, what a big axe you have!"

I finished this piece off this arvo...now onto the next one...

You did a great job on those ruins. The lasercut stuff still looks a little too clean edged for what's supposed to be irregular crumbling stone blocks to me, but you made it work.

Finally finished preparing all my models for painting. They are a mix of;

Anvil Industries (Resin Warhounds), North Star/Osprey Frostgrave (Metals), North Star/Osprey Frostgrave Soldiers Box Set (Plastics), Games Workshop Bretonnian Peasant Bowmen (Plastics), Gripping Beast Viking Hirdmen (Plastics), Gripping Beast Saxon Thegns (Plastics) and Fireforge Games Templar Infantry (Plastics).

I'm going to put a limit on how many of each type of soldier a Warband can contain, simply to reduce the amount of mini's I'm going to have to paint.

(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y93/awesomeshotdude/Frostgrave/P1060066_zps3ixngsmr.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/awesomeshotdude/media/Frostgrave/P1060066_zps3ixngsmr.jpg.html)

Also, whilst I'm slowly continuing on with all my 4Ground Ruins of Daldorr pieces, I've started this. It is made up from the Battlefield in a Box Ruins and I'm going to fill in the gaps between the pieces with rubble and then paint it all in the same colours that I have painted my other ruins. There's going to be a yet-to-be-determined statue in the middle.

Looks like a god centerpiece there. Ruins which had a clear civic pre-ruin purpose and aren't just houses/inns/shops always do it for me.

I finished off another set of ruins, made some progress on the circular ruins using the Battlefield-in-a-Box stuff (still haven't decided on a statue for the centre), and started on two more sets using some Pegasus stuff.

Thanks guys.

@ Robh - At the moment, I'm using a cloth with a full snow print on it. It's not exactly what I want though. If someone came out with a half flagstone/half snow covered 4' x 4' mat, I'd be all over it, but I won't hold my breath. I think what I will end up doing is making my own board - 4 lots of 2' x 2' boards I can piece together and on that I will have a flagstone/cobblestone pattern with areas covered by snow...I think this would suitably represent portions of Frostgrave.

@ Drachenklinge -  I'll take a pic of all the terrain together once I get a few more pieces done.

@ SBMiniaturesGuy - I'm using Woodland Scenics Soft Flake Snow mixed into a paste with PVA glue.

@ Elbows - I'll definitely be making some upper level walkways at some stage down the track.

I also note that 4Ground are announcing the next Ruins of Daldorr kit, next week. I've got a fairly strong feeling it is going to be a ruined tower of some sort...I hope so. They also just released some more ruined houses which I've bought a couple sets of to add to my current collection.

3'x3' rather than 4'x4' but Cigarbox have a lovely looking mat aimed at Frostgrave players:

Thanks for the link mate, much appreciated.

I did see this mat, and very nearly bought the 6'x4' version, however I just didn't like the tracks/creeks and the blue cracks along the surface as well as the grass. If it was just the two elements - snow and cobblestone - I would definitely have grabbed it. I ended up going with their full snow mat instead.

I'm going to see if Deep Cut Studio will take their own Cobblestone pattern and whack a heap of snow across it in big patches...that on one of their mousepad material mats at 4'x4' would be perfect I reckon.

The Cigar Box Winter Scrubland mat is actually really quite versatile too. While it's not designed for an urban setting, the mix of whites, greys and greens makes for a fantastic generic base.

They've just added a 3x3 option to their store, which is perfect for Frostgrave: http://cigarboxbattlestore.bigcartel.com/product/winter-scrubland-3x3-192

Thanks for the link mate, that is indeed a nice mat. It's not really what I'm after though. I'm pretty much after cobblestones covered in patches of snow so I can plonk my terrain pieces down on top of it all and have it appear to be situated within what was the main parts of the city.

DCS already does make a "Tundra" pattern mat that has a bit of bare ground, as opposed to their 100% snow "Winter Theme" mat.  I was thinking of ordering one of those for use with FG.   ;)

Either way looking forward to seeing your table layouts and that warband painted up to your usual awesome standard. ;)

Hey mate. Yeah, I haven't been on WAU for ages. My modelling time is somewhat reduced recently, Frostgrave has grabbed my imagination though so I've made sure I've found some time for it amongst all the other stuff real life is bringing with it in recent times...busy, busy, busy...

We could catch up for a game at some stage, not sure when, but it would definitely be cool to be able to.

Anyway I'll turn my blog/plog over here soon and we will see how we all go with the game and if its got a little bit of life in our local META.

In a mad flurry of impulse purchasing, I bought one of the Hudson and Allen Basic Medieval Tower Keeps. The pics of them look good on the internet, I hope they are good in person too.

I imagine Frostgrave was very cosmopolitan in nature, at it's height...buildings designed and built by the city authorities probably were similar in aesthetics, however folk from a great variety of regions near and far would also bring their style of architecture into Frostgrave. So this Medieval Tower Keep may be able to serve as a reclusive wizards abode or something similar...

They're listed as 25mm scale, but I'm hoping they will work fine for 28mm scale too...

It's resin, they say. I imagine it would be hollow, so shouldn't be too heavy.
