Title: Mounted in Frostgrave
Post by: FrozenRob on 28 July 2015, 05:59:24 AM
How would mounted soldiers work in Frostgrave

I guess they would be faster, and have some + in fight for the height advantage of being in the saddle.

The downside might be that horses are scared of undead, and other nasty monsters.

I'd also add some slippery-factor. The faster, the slipper. ^^
Maybe there is additional equipment, like clothes for the mount's feet, to not slip.

Also one cannot collect treasure from the backs of their mounts. And for sure some spells will scare some mounts.
If in need for some special mounts, I'd try to make them special, like boars, which can attack as well, do not slip much, but are usually slower and such.
Usually mounts cannot be ridden (rode?) into smaller openings, etc.

I think it is possible to add more diversity with mounts, and also more fun, but due to higher speed, I would either limit the amounts of ... ahm ... mounts ... or make them expensive, cause the troup has to provide them with food and shelter and such.

what about....

Horse/Ridden animal's Movement 10” and cost 10gc for a horse/donkey/mule; 20gc for warhorse or wolf  or warboar etc. that has 1 melee attack

That sounds by far too cheap to me. What's a thug? 10 or 20? You get more speed for 10 and an attack for 20? Mounts should be 50 at least, better more. Vary it for donkeys and pack horses 30-40, trained horses/mounts 60, average, not good, but not bad either 50. Each ability (attack, fear, good on ice, vigilant, special trained, claws, etc) additional 10-20gc.

Otherwise You could just say increase speed for 10. Sounds unbalanced to me, then

As there are no horses in frostgrave as written ... I have decided not to include them. But them my table has the city still under some very deep snow!
However i do want to mount the odd wizard on a bear or a wolf but I will only be using animals form the bestiary .....

Except for Bill the shetland  pony .... someone worked out that you could ligitinately pick The fellowship of the Ring as a Frostgrave warband ... with 10 points left over. I suggested you take Bill the shetland Pony for 10 points the same as a Warhound who does not fight but can carry treasure ... if someone is there to load him up and will take it home all by himself and can carry an additional item for a soldier or wizard.

As for other mounts they can fight like their monster profiles and take a soldier slot ... need to work out their costs.
The irder must dismount to fight, cast spells or pick up treasure ... But he can load the treasure onto his mount and use him as a pack animal.

Especially considering that boots of +1 move are set to cost 300 Gc

I like the pack donkey idea.

I don't see mounted troops having a place in Frostgrave itself. But they may be wilderness areas on the edge of he city where they may be of more us.

I recently found my copy of Empire in Flames  (the Mordheim supplement not the WHFRP book) which covered similar things and added mounted rules etc.

In my opinion simplest thing are the best. After years of Mordheim, I feel tired with complicated rules for mounted - dismounting, falling, scaring horses etc.

I propose making 2 new henchmen types - Rider and Mounted Knight. First would be light cavalryman without any armour and with handweapon (thug on a horse). Second would be armed with handweapon, mail armour and shield (knight on a horse).
As we don't have to specify weapons, I feel it's useless to specify mounts, so anything from horses, boars, rams and dogs to lizards, constructs or magical giant chickens.

Mounted have longer movement rate, but cannot go upstairs. They are unable to pick any treasure. Also no option for dismounting. Stat wise they could have thug and knight stats with point higher fight (easier to fight from horseback) and one point less in will (have to control horse).

No other special skil rules. +1 to hit them is not needed - mounted models are higher so usually cannot get cover.

Thumbsup to Kadzik.

I want a wizard on a sabre-tooth cat though (seeing as I have a cat ready ;)).

I think the author mentioned in a prior topic of a similar subject that there aren't any because the city is too elevated, ruinous, and inaccessible for them. This also might be a cover for preserving game balance as allowing faster mounted troops to run off with treasure tokens would probably upset said balance.

I've written - no option for mounted troops to carry a treasure.

I've got no strong thirst to implement mounted for all cost. But I'd love to see some great models on the tables :)

Nice ideas, sounds good. Could I suggest a third mounted soldier type, the horse archer? Seems like they'd be very at home in a cold climate.

Why not. But these guys should have shooting lower than normal archers. First, shooting from horseback is more difficult, second, for game balance - I can foresee he would become mobile fire platform, which could be painful for opponent.

I agree with all of this, except I would also give them Large (which would give a bonus to hit them with shooting attacks).
