His name may not be familiar to all of us, but Shep Paine is an icon in the world of model building, and dioramas and was an inspiration to many. In particular he is well known for his diorama work with Monogram kits of the '70's . Sad to report that he recently suffered a stroke and is in critical condition in hospital.
I for one hope he recovers.

Oh no, very sorry to hear this. Shep Paine's modeling books were an inspiration to me. I remember buying one of his diorama books. Beautiful stuff and his instructions were so easy to understand.
-
Very sad to hear this. A true pioneer.

His work was a real inspiration to me as a kid, getting home from a department store in the 1970s with a monogram model and finding this amazing booklet inside the box. It showed just how lifelike a scale model could be, and my love of modeling in turn got me very ready to embrace miniatures when a high school friend told me he was wargaming with them… .
-
Really sorry to hear this.
His work was almost surely what pulled me into figure painting and converting, which ultimately led to wargaming.
I still think Last Stand At Gandamak' is the best diorama I've ever seen.
Sincerely hope he pulls through and is able to enjoy another number of years with his loved ones.

I hope he gets better, I have two of his books, his work is truly amazing

Very sad news :(

That is indeed sad. I enjoyed seeing his works in FineScale Modeler.

Hope he recovers. An inspiration of his time.

Since it was only referred to by link, once more in the clear: Mr. Paine sadly passed away in early August. Despite us not usually doing obituary or eulogy threads, due to Mr. Paine being such an icon in the model-making hobby, I'll leave this thread open for the time being. Please be respectful and measured in your responses.

Man, I was just looking through a couple of his books over the weekend for inspiration as I got ready to work on my first 28mm WW2 models.
He was really a motivating factor for me when I was building 1:35 scale stuff in the early 90s.

Sad to see this. I bought his book on building dioramas almost 15 years ago and it really captured my imagination. Modelling lost a true craftman and visionary; A master. What I admired most about his work was the storytelling. There was always technical wizardry in his presentations but there was also a story of that he was sharing with the viewer.

Threadomancy on an obituary thread is more than a bit inappropriate, so I will lock this one.
