Title: A quest of chaotic compulsions (painting/gaming blog)
Post by: wasteman on August 01, 2015, 12:14:37 AM
Hi guys,
It's been ages since I've painted anything fantasy oriented, however, Age of Sigmar has got me all excited!
So I dug out my old Nurgle 40k daemons and gave them a refresh... then it all kind of got out of hand...

I'm not normally one to use special characters as I much prefure to sculpt my own characters, but this guy was just too cool. Giant Nurgling comander riding a giant magot monster?! Hells yeah!
Morbidex Twiceborn and plaguebearers:

Gave the bases on my nurglings and Great unclean one a refresh (they were bright green - no idea what i was thinking when i made that decision lol)

Picked up some of the Avatars of war 'corruptors of the apocalypse' last week- very cool minis! Also found my old Albion giant in bits and nurgled him up a bit:

Then decided to sculpt myself some trolls... because i like trolls
(http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz345/wasteman_game/nurgle_trolls_zpstzrroqne.png)

Got some other bits on the go including another troll, a hydra that needs a repaint, a chaos lord, and some skaven plague monks made from Hobbit Goblins...
...also may have pre ordered the Otherworld Skirmish game...

Please tell me you cast the trolls first before painting them and added them to your radtown stuff.
Also brilliant painting! great

Thanks!
Sorry, I made a mould for one (which i then used as a dolly for these) but it's a real pain to cast and it's a little too similar to a gw troll. I plan on making some trolls for Wasteman at some point, but it won't be for a while. Think of these as a trial run... the next batch will be better.

Awesome army! You really did justice to those nurgle models.

Regarding the trolls, more direct copies of GW troll designs are happily out there, but if you'd want to be safe anyway, some small modifications to the heads would suffice.

Impressive sculpting and painting.

Is the great unclean one a scratchbuild?

Really nice.. The luch vegetation on the base goes well I think and marks the out from most nurglite forces.

Your creations all boast some FANTASTIC brushwork & basing. VERY WELL DONE!

Thanks a lot guys!

@weismonsters - The great unclean one is a bit half and half. Started as a normal one and i just kept sculpting bits on him. He may end up being a demoted to a daemon prince as he's looking a little tiny these days!

Got some more pics today

First up is the start of my skaven allies. Made some plague monks from Hobbit goblins - just sculpted new heads and tails for them. Got a few more on the way. The vermin lord is made from a plastic balrog.

And Age of sigmar has given me an awesome excuse to use this bad boy:

thanks :)

With the delivery of my otherworld rulebook presumably drawing ever closer I decided to dig out some of my lord of the rings figures in anticipation. Fingers crossed should have enough to do a warband or two

That balrog conversion is brilliant.

the two giants/ogres in the last pic- are they conversions or where are they from (are they lotr too)?

The Age of Sigmar & Other World's Rule Book certainly have inspired you to produce some OUTSTANDING creations. SO that's why everyone gets excited about new rules. One & all, VERY WELL DONE!

Thanks!

This week I finally got round to painting up some of my arcworlde figures. Added some noses to make these huge orc types into ogres. So much fun to paint!

Had an awesome game against my mate Kev today. My chaos were attacking his dwaves at their fort. Kev's castle is just so cool, very glad he dug it out! It was a lot of fun and I lost horribly as per usual lol

I have no words for your pictures...   :-* :-* :-*

Don't stop bringing the good work to here so I can keep drooling over it. The last post, those are some Wargames factory aren't they? I'm also putting a few together and while that is quite a task, I really like them as well

I had no idea how tough warmachines are in combat, my ogres bounced like a beach ball

You might consider just going for the crew next time and just leave the warmachine undamaged. Without any crew it's not really a danger ;)

Thanks guys! The ogres were probably the most fun to paint. It makes me sad that I only have three left unpainted :(

They are indeed wargames factory skellies. Lovely figures!

I was under the impression that your opponent picks who takes wounds in a unit. I will have another read of the rules.

In other news it looks like my otherworld rulebook has been dispatched! :D

Ooh Otherworld miniatures; I have a feeling that this thread will get even nicer :)

Just went through the entire Age of Sigmar rulebook and could not find anything about wound allocation, which for me just means that you hit and wound the model that you are in contact with. Off course it's possible that there is already an errata that is longer than the rules :D

I may or may not have just purchased some gorgeous centaurs... hopefully i can use them in their game!

The rules are actually pretty specific about targeting the unit as a whole rather than individual figures. It then goes on to say that your opponent distributes damage as they see fit. Seeming as the crew and war machine are part of the same unit, they can use its better armour save then mix and match the damage across the whole unit.

Ok so i've been busy painting more skeletons tonight, but not had as much time as my books turned up so I've had a bit of a busy week with real 'work'

Had another fantastic battle yesterday! This time against my friend Martin's Dark Elves.
My mission was to defend the necromancer's abode, which I did, thus claiming a glorious victory!
His table was gorgeous. All my friends have better scenery than me, considering I run a miniatures company I should probable do something about that...
Anyway here are some photos from the game (apologies for the quality, Gandalf's blinding light was shining through the living room)

Incredible looking games, lovely miniatures, great skill to be able to take mass produced models and change/resculpt them to suit your own ideas and preferences.

Such a gorgeous book!
And i finally got round to painting my first otherworld miniature the other night. This guy is my necromancer (He's since been finished so i'll get some nice photos of him with his minions soon)

Really felt my necromancer needed a hovel and found this bird house in hobby craft for £1
(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xft1/v/t1.0-9/11870916_10155962365475191_8003084459116883077_n.jpg?oh=50d7376d31a9cf4ae477a82d752a0eb3&oe=5682986F)
sculpted a door and window for it
(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpt1/v/t1.0-9/11870916_10155962365280191_276788593547894692_n.jpg?oh=9a0ba6ffcaa938df2096b76c7c44166e&oe=56364D26)
then lathered it in textured paint and bits of card
(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/11905381_10155962364945191_4969673781168141369_n.jpg?oh=25a92c153ec9fd0379d16c15b1e92250&oe=568131B3)
and it's nearly time for my necromancer to move in, just some details to do

COOL STUFF! The Necromancers digs are suitably spooky with a certain mausoleum feel to it...I love the window & the roof. VERY WELL DONE, one & all!

Thanks!
I finished the hovel last night and managed to get a more dynamic photo of my undead so far

Got myself a cannon and stone thrower to paint up tonight! Can't wait to make the crew for them

That's a great bit of scenery - and wonderful painting. I love the shields!

Thanks! The shields were a lot of fun to paint.

Ok Saturday so day off and time thankfully this came just in time...Got the 'barbarian catapult'  from Scotia Grendel. It's sooo cool! Just made a skeleton crew for this bad boy

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpl1/v/t1.0-9/11952991_10155968430775191_7941617562902421819_n.jpg?oh=d50007e9b90d3768198a7509194dca7a&oe=566B93E6)

And I got this with it too, an absolute beast of a cannon! Not sure what to do for the crew of this. I'm tempted by chaos dwarves with a slave ogre, or possibly deamons.

Yeah. Been on the store a few times but never really seen much of the fantasy stuff painted up, so it's great to see it.

Great stuff. I really like what you did with the WF Skeletons. I wasnt so sure if I would use mine as skeletons or just for parts, but your post has shown how well they can look. However I dont think I can match your shield painting skills. Awesome work and a good use of different manufacturers!

I'm eyeing up the barbarian chariots.  I will certainly be back for those in the not so distant future.

Thanks! The studio photos on the WF skellies really don't do them justice. They're easily the best skeleton kit available. As for the shields, I find 2d painting much easier than model painting, but I do get a lot more practice.

Got a little more painting in last night

Stunning! You paint and post even faster than I can follow your post and I don't want to miss any as I like waht I see.

The skellies are indeed pretty good, love the set as well. I might "steal" you idea of turning them into crew for warmachines...
Nice work on the scotia grendel stuff as well. I have those pieces as well and the cannon ended up with my (chaos) Ogres, but would do well with a chaos dwarf slave master as well :)

Thanks! I may have ordered some reinforcements... one box of skellies just didn't seem enough! I'm still not 100% sure what to do with the cannon crew so I'm gunna leave it for a while. I may just sculpt something for it.

So I've started work on some celtos figures, which I'm planning on using in both my chaos army and as a warband for otherworld skirmish. Here are the first four of sixteen:
I did originally do the kilts in tartan, but it looked dreadful so i gave up on that idea lol.
And I started work on a second building, this one's a little bigger:

I've been working on some other bits as well, but no pics yet. I may have also just acquired a bunch more deamons, the weed from crooked dice, and ordered one of these to use as a giant:

Wow thanks :)

So it turns out I was mistaken in my assumption that Ral Pather had gone the way of the dinosaur. This revelation may have resulted in some late night spending. Also a mate sold me his old dogs of war ogres and old minotaurs!

Things are gunna get interesting...

Yeah I hear ya. I used a darker undercoat on them for the armour etc so the contrast went up a notch. The bad photo doesn't help either
