Title: Looking for some scrub making inspiration
Post by: 6mmfan on 03 August 2015, 08:27:38 AM
Hi all

I'm planning to make some 15 and 28mm scale scrub patches for gaming but I'm short on inspiration  :(

These will mostly be for Europe with a maybe some Arid ideas as well.

Has anyone got any good ideas or articles they could link to, or pictures of your own or others creations?

TIA
Kieran

Here's some I made a while ago, fully described on my blog (http://mojobob.blogspot.co.nz/2012/05/terrain-experiments.html):

The trees are lengths of fluffy chenile pipe-cleaner things, soaked in PVA and painted. If you wanted pure scrub, just leave them off.

Silly season eh?  :D

Scrubs means bushes or rather undergrowth?

I hope those links help.

I've got rocks & tall grases made from cheap paint brushes for areas of scrub or rough terrain. Some of it on a large base, to define the area. Others on smaller movable bases, to fill out the appearance of the table/terrain.

I made some little vegetation stands:

I've been thinking of doing an additional lot of some smaller ones on coins to have further scatter. I know some folks just like to loosely toss flock on a tabletop, and that can look lovely and natural, but it's a bit of a mess to clean up.

Very good ideas, I hadn't thought of removable pieces to put onto a large piece.

I have always been partial to Iceland Moss (that's what it's called here in Germany, at least). You know... the spongy, rubbery and soft moss used extensively in railroad modeling. I think the first picture shows a tuft or it.

If you do the doughnut templates (with the removable centre) they give you many more options to go all out with density and detail.  For brush, I used rubberised coconut husk covered in flock as undergrowth in my forest templates.

It is the material that is used in wrought iron planters similar to this.

If you look in the local dollar/pound store it is usually in the home décor isle.  I prefer it becasue it does not dry out and cannot go mouldy.  For flock I used the sawdust flock method.
Hope that helps and gives you some more ideas.
Snitchy sends.

Nice. I brought a big bag of coconut husks as I haven't seen rubberised horse hair in NZ. I will try that as well.
