Title: North American source for 5mm foam?
Post by: Hupp n at em on 08 August 2015, 07:36:07 PM
So I need to make some buildings for Frostgrave, and extruded polystyrene seems like the best material to carve stonework into.  The problem is, I can't seem to find it in that thin size anywhere.  Anyone know where I can source some in NA?

Check hobby stores that specialize in RC supplies. I don't think there's a hardware store type application for it, and craft stores seem to preffer the floral and bead types. There's an RC place in my area though that carries it alongside balsa and carbon fiber rod and other materials for the guys who make their own planes.

Yeah, that was my thought.  The local Hobbytown diddn't have any foam (of any kind) but Hobby Lobby and Michael's only had expanded Polystyrene, and Home Depot only had insulation foam in thicker varieties.

My Google Fu is weak, but it appears this:

Is 5mm extruded polystyrene.  From what I read, must say 'FOAMULAR' or some such.  I know my Lowes stopped carrying some of these, and switched to a strange, green styrofoam that felt more like the floral styrofoam.

You gotta look for a place that proper specializes in RC. Even though Hobbytown and Hobby Lobby do a lot of RC business these days, they're too "jack of all trades, master of none" no matter what you're into IMO. Good for middle of the road mass market stuff only.

Craft stores are the same, but with a different demographic skew. More aimed at bored housewives and kids' school projects. They have a lot of variety, but there's a strong bias towards entry level tier stuff.

Midwestern Products cellfoam sheets?
http://midwestproducts.com/collections/cellfoam-sheets

It appears that my local supplier UDISCO (Montreal)  has it in stock so I will be checking it out on Saturday.

I picked up a sheet of 5mm, it is very flexible but also fragile as I managed to break the sheet by picking it up just on 1 edge, it will need a stronger backing. It is nothing like James is using in his build
