Title: Vissy - Takes on Frostgrave
Post by: VisOne on 15 August 2015, 02:45:59 PM
Good Day Gentlemen and Me'ladies. :D

I wasn't actually going to start and account on here initially I do wander through from time to time but I usually see what I want or read what I need and head back to my usual stomping grounds but I noted a little bit of a hobby hero of mine posts here so I thought why not chuck my work up as well if nothing else might help me keep in touch with him.

I normally only stick to Infinity as my single game system but Frostgrave seems to pry barred its way into my heart thanks to the fact its run from a D20 system and Din's awesome Adventures in Mordheim (http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=168054&hl=) thread I couldn't stop myself from going all right if I have to have a second game it might as well be something fun to play with friends at home and plus its not Sci-Fi. Besides even if I don't play it heaps if I keep my terrain generic for the most part it can be used for Infinity.

I'm a bit of a fluffy bunny sometimes so once I decided I wanted to actually build and play I knew I wanted to build to a theme or even a backstory so I while reading through the types of wizards I could play and the 'history of the rise and fall of felsted' I came up with one.

Quote
Decided I wanted my Wizard to actually be a mistreated Apprentice of one of the original great Wizards or Felstad who through a poor turn of events most likely of his own doing was transposed into another’s body just before the fall of the great city itself. A let’s just say the other body is nothing special it was the soulless dead body of a once great hero king. Now he is little more than a Wight in the most kingly attire. This body of dust, bones and heavy armour was nothing like his own and he was never a fighter learning to use such a body would be difficult for even a Master Wizard and that he is not. Frozen for aeons he recently was released from his own personal hell by a self-styled Necromancer who little more than a hedge wizard himself in fact that’s an insult to hedge wizards everywhere. Still he knew enough of the dark arts for my Wizard to drain him of all his knowledge of the arts of today. Alas nothing of worth on how to lift the curse he finds himself under. However he is not concerned much he now has an indentured servant I mean apprentice of his own he is free to move about the city and its outskirts once more even if he always feels compelled after a few days to return to his lair. Clearly there is a geas at work keeping him trapped in Felstad just one more layer of curse it seems. His drive now is to break them all return himself to his body or at least one that isn’t a corpse and be free of this a curse frozen hell!

Did I mention he has a name its Dr. Bonesplitter M.D. really keen fans of a certain fictional podcast will know what that is from.

I had a miniature in mind and I was lucky enough to source it for a decent price without giving me hard earned monies to the big bad. I was even lucky enough to grab a couple tertiary models from the same line to adds to the theme. Then earlier in the week I was talking to Paul from the Emperor's Legion one of my FLGS who stocks Frostgrave and he mentioned getting in some of the Soldiers Boxsets so I grabbed one of them too.

THEN!

I have goodies coming from Red Box Games (http://red-box-games.com/) in the US! A Warband made around the awesome The Lady Nyvenne (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25&products_id=172) with Yrsa the Accursed (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13&products_id=201) as her apprentice and mixture of HelsVakt Hordesmen and the The Craven to back them up. Finally if I can fix an issue with my order I should be getting some Lesser Undead (http://red-box-games.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25&products_id=175) which I think are the best zombie models I've ever seen.

OHH that's still not all.

I had to order me some 3D markers for the treasure you hunt in this game. I like me some laser cut tokens but for objectives I would rather real terrain.

All of it is from a nice resin business run out of Poland by found it through one of my google searches which lead to a forum thread talking about funnily enough what you can use to make 3D objective markers for Frostgrave. Good reviews from what I have seen and all of the Polish people I have dealt with thus far have being solid so I'm willing to give them a go. Their called Ristuls Market (http://ristulsmarket.com/).

And that about does it .... OR DOES IT! Wouldn't be a Vissy thread without some terrain.

I wanted my table to be reasonably generic winter ruins so in a pinch it could serve as a Infinity table as well if need for say tournaments or just as a second table my place since I've lent all my other tables out.

I had a workplace incident today cut my non-dominant index finger the other day with a knife as may happen when someone is engaging you in conversation when you're using sharp objects. Anyway it gave me an extra few hours of sun today to get out and watch the kids while I started on my Frostgrave table. I proceeded to bleeds on everything while I worked though ended up wearing a glove. Any hoooooo its finally stopped bleeding now and here are some photos of what I did get done.

The first step for generic ruins for my winter frost grave/infinity table.
Need to etch both sides and distress the joins a little before I cut down the wall sections and form them into various Heights.

Both sides etched now comes the making the walls part

What it looks like mocked up on the table.

4' by 4' so decent coverage for frost grave. A little light for infinity.

However allot more to come trees, scatter terrain and of course treasure!

Another angle with site foreman fatty dog in the back ground ensuring safe work practices.

Other side.

Hope you had fun checking this out.

Feed back welcome as usual. Hoping for some more updates on the table soon.

Earlier this morning I was able to finish distressing the walls since the buildings compound/glue I used on them had dried. I even had enough time to get the walls painted today but fate in the form of my 2 devil offspring decided to intercede with my ability to actually get photos done or even get past the primer and first couple of highlights with the rattle cans.

Tomorrow I'll head back out and work on them again this time I'll get some happy snaps. They have come up pretty well though.

Need to really consider if I want to base them or not. They are pretty light but basing is a PITA! Plus it makes them harder to store. Offset is they look better and allow me to put grass tufts and what not on them.

I'm tempted to counterweight them using some lead sinkers like some 10 grams countersink 3 or 4 holes in the bottom and 2 part epoxy them into the holes. I'm done it before with chest pieces but not sure how this foam will react with 2 part epoxy.

Decisions Decisions.

I really like the look of the foam block ruins, and yours are great.  Plus its a nice inexpensive way to build a lot of terrain.

But I always wondered several things about them.

1) Wouldnt you need to mount these to a base?  Seems the foam would be too light,  opening doors, dice and hands knocking them about would seem to be a problem to me.

2) Transport and storage.  Seems these would be fairly fragile and have a tendency to break/chip, especially if mounted to sturdy/heavy base boards.  I would be afraid to stack them.

I have a lot of the pegasus plastics all mounted up and dont really fear sticking them up in bins to take to a friends house. I was thinking about doing something like you are doing for the underground library scenario, just the above has kept from starting (as I cant afford another $100 for Pegasus walls to make a modular library right now.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks for the feedback I'll have a crack at giving you some answers or at least some experiences I've had and that will either way lay or increase your fears I suppose.

1) Wouldn't you need to mount these to a base?  Seems the foam would be too light,  opening doors, dice and hands knocking them about would seem to be a problem to me.

No you don't need to base most of the time. Assuming you are working with pieces that have a decent flat surface and are in turn on a flat surface. These walls are made from 25mm (1") sheets of yellow extruded polystyrene and each 'block' is 25mm (1") high and 50mm (2") wide so most of the pieces have quite a lot of flat surface to support them.

They do move though thats where I was thinking I might increase their weight by countersinking some lead wishing sinkers into the base of the foam. Excuse the sorry paint shop image I couldn't be bothered opening fireworks and making something better at the moment.

Basing them increases the size dramatically and as I think you yourself have covered in your second point raises more issues than it necessarily fixes.

BUT basing adds to the look of a table so its really up to you. When I do base I use 3mm MDF or Masonite and leave a 1 inch edge from each terrain item to the end of the base. However as mentioned increases the size dramatically so I tend to only do that for house/club terrain.

I have done similar things before without basing and I've not had serious issues with playability.

2) Transport and storage.  Seems these would be fairly fragile and have a tendency to break/chip, especially if mounted to sturdy/heavy base boards.  I would be afraid to stack them.

Yes they are to some extent but so is plastic, MDF, HDF or resin if you mishandle your terrain and don't at least try to soften some of the blows it might take in transit then you will be forever fixing things that's just a given.

I think the relative cost offsets the issues of possible damage well it does for me at least and if you are even a little like me you might have some spare foam or bubble wrap around you can use to create some cushioning for your travel boxes the terrain goes in when not in use or in transit. I don't wrap every item like its model but I do put a layer of something being say my Laser Cut MDF buildings and the Foam 'Ice' pieces then another between the the Ice Pieces and the Laser Cut Cardboard pieces and so on until the box is filled.

Hope that helps and don't let something as simple as doubts about material or storage/transit get in the way of a good game. ;)

PICTURE TIME!!!

Right so did I get to this stage?

I use my Ironlaks - Sugar Artists’ Acrylic series color Plaque which is a dark grey as the base. That's the foam friendly spray I use as a primer.

Then I hit it with a lighter Grey to get some zenithial highlights. Since the foam is now sealed I can use normal rattle can spray this time I used Motortech - Grey Primer which is just a normal spray enamel.

Then finally to start the winter look I hit it with a white spray for this I used Dymark - Spray Mark which is actually line marking spray its great as it can be sprayed straight down!

That means I can now once its all dry go and give it a hit with some snow effects. Then a coat of varnish and maybe some grass tufts or something like that to make it look even more weathered and ye olde ruins.

Your wall ruins are coming along really well mate, looking forward to seeing them all finished. The stuff you've ordered for your treasure markers looks very cool indeed and will help make some excellent looking markers.

I really enjoy LAF ... not a single week without a new bookmark for pitential shops, blogs and stuff. Ristuls ... got it, thanks.

As to the walls. They look good indeed. I would base then, cause there are more possibilities to make them look nice along the rim, although it makes them less generic a bit.
One can put rubble in the corners without putting it there with extra terrain. They have a more robust stand and get their weight that way, too.
With bases they seem a little bit more "independant". Without bases terrain looks like "just put there, not beloning there" in most cases.
However, I am interested in Your outcome either way!

so far, everything looks quite cool!  :D

Thanks for the feedback Vis.  The weights are a good idea.  I have a ton of washers I could use.  Just put a slit up the center and line the walls with washers should help keep them in place.  I have a 2' x 2' mat from deadzone I was planning to use for the library.

(not my pic.)

With your wall technique lined up to the 3" squares already on the mat, plus some misc bookshelves and such, I think this will work out grand.  Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for the feedback gents.

I'm pretty sold on leaving them baseless to try and keep it generic as possible. That doesn't mean I won't have based pieces especially the really 'frostgrave' centric pieces but for these walls to be as universal as I want them to be they will have to remain baseless or I would have to cut their bases specially to fit each one which I don't have time to do. Good I miss my old house had a giant wood working shed. :(

Anyway ran out of foam friendly spray paint and wasn't able to finish these fixed that issue earlier this week.

Note I've gone through with my airbrush and intentionally darkened some areas especially the base areas to help them pop a little on a white background. This will ruin the immersion for some but I'm not overly worried as more often than not they will be one a grey board or a green board or what ever the club/house I'm at using them has to offer so that black modulation will help make them different to the surface regardless of colour.

You can also see I have a Corvus Belli - Father Knight (http://store.infinitythegame.com/articulo.php?o=3&id=2344) in there to give you an idea of scale. He is a imposing model and on a resin base so if I can get total concealment behind a 2 block and a good half covered with a single I'm really happy with their LoS/LoF blocking potential.

Now I just need to decide how much snow effect I want to put on them and if I want to add some earth like areas some grass tufts can be put onto them. Speaking of which were lucky enough to have a nice local small business in Australia making some awesome grass tufts now. Leadbears Tufts (https://www.facebook.com/leadbearstufts) only through their FB page and a personal Ebay seller for now but well worth a look cost per piece is damn excellent especially for any AUS/NZ members here.

Finally some models arrived!

Some Wargames Factory Zooooombies and the few Geedub minis I mentioned earlier in the thread. Finally I can start building and painting something.
Title: Re: Vissy - Takes on Frostgrave
Post by: VisOne on 20 August 2015, 12:22:15 PM

Had an idea when I was out shopping with the family. Realised I could countersink these sinkers without a drill bit and most likely not use 2 part epoxy.

So here's how I'm planning on ensuring these walls don't fall down to often during games.

I'm taking a size 2 Ball sinker lightly embedding it onto the base to form an nice imprint I then lightly remove a bit of the compressed foam just enough to form a cavity the same size or a little smaller than the sinker.

I then can insert the sinker till it's flush or slightly recessed under the base.

Now with a base at least 25mm (1") wide and a much greater weight than it's top most part it's realty unlikely to knock over easily.

I was up at the QNK premier event today in carboolture playing in there Chain of Command infinity tournament. Solid event took first prize lucky me.

But not super important to this thread what is. Found 2 Dark Age minis to use for roaming monsters and no joke I picked up like $180.00 worth of CnC Miniatures Terrain - Pantheon (https://www.miniaturescenery.com/CategoryPage.asp?Code=CAT_PN) terrain for $40.00 got to be at least a 4' x 4' tables worth there.

I'm stoked a 1st prize based on skill and two great value deals.

I guess maybe it was a failed terrain project or a product range just taking up shelf space doing nothing earning no money?

Its a butt ton of terrain though!

The Darkage models there is some decent stuff in there but its more like 30mm so good for random encounter monsters I think. Especially keen to paint that clear blue resin model. Will take to it with the airbrush to zenithal highlight it to death then heaps of streaking and edge highlighting. BUT unlike the studio model (http://images.frpgames.org/products/product_15336.jpg) I'll leave the lower unpainted edges resin OR maybe do it the other way paint it upside down!

Man thats gonna be boss can't wait to try it out.

Appreciate Max thanks for the comment. ;)

I was quite lucky I managed to get there was very nearly called off on my end as my step father Lt. Col Ham passed earlier in the week. It was not an unexpected event he was very sick with progressive liver failure; but it still it turned the whole world on its head. He however is now at eternal rest and my mother is visibility better after the funeral this Wednesday.

Anyway that sombre note aside. I've managed into between the chaos that is my home and work life to get some work done.

Proceeded to add yet more modulation to the board in the form of some dirt areas. I white glued some fine sand down then hit each area with Badger: Minitaire Bark Brown and Earth Brown.

Then added some various tufts more on these later.

Really mixed up the nature of each and where I put them so not every piece has some.

There not very noticeable from up high though.

Now the tufts I'm using are not my normal Army Painter or miniNature not that either of those are bad at all but when you're looking at cost per tuft and you see something like these Lead Bear Tufts that are both high quality, cheap and local small business (South Australia) its hard to go past them.

Finally I actually started assembling and conversting models for the warband. I'll show off the conversion/kit bashing parts later once I get some real colour on them. For now its just basing, priming and preshading with the airbrush.

Higher shot.

I might have to source another Wight King model to see if I can't get a better pose than this one by building it myself. Unfortunately mine was pre-built from a BSS which is fine but it limited my options a little as those plastic fusing glues cannot be undone one applied and dry.

Ohh and BTW anyone know where these dogs are from?

Got them in a BSS Haqqislam deal off a mate but I have NO idea where they are from.

Yeah thats them and good eye they had being cut down and some saddles green stuffed onto them previously before I dropped them in a nice acetone bath. The original owner wanted to make some alternate Kum Bikers because he didn't like the old monobike ones (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HHk9e-I-uR4/U0-fZCZ2DLI/AAAAAAAAMoM/B83E1WC4YlE/s1600/Kum+Biker+Comparison.jpg).

Good to know I could get more if I needed them. Mine are white metal not that other resin they use and I refuse to deal with.

So I am finally going to get to doing some work on mine tonight.  Can I ask how you went about scoring the mortar lines and distressing the corners?

Of course you may happy to help.

I have actually answered this question more or less elsewhere so excuse the copy and paste.

All the tools I used are shown in that photo with the sheet on the table.

I used the set square to mark out 25mm (1") increments vertically did about 10 in total so I would end up with 10 x 25mm (1") high wall pieces.

Then again using the set square I marked 50mm (2") horizontally ensuring odds were offset to evens as is the norm with most brick work.

One it was all marked using the Set Square as a straight edge I scored to about 2mm deep with my little file. Its one of those ones which is like a small triangle shape which gives a nice irregular score. The foam also has a natural grain which reacts differently depending if you go with it OR against it. Thus why the horizontal scores look clean in comparison to the vertical! One I scored it all back and front I cut it into walls of 2 or 3 blocks high and of course decide how I wanted them to together. Then glue where needed I used a builders adhesive from a caulking gun cause I had an old tube to use up anyway.

Next day is when I distressed it using that same Small Metal File the back edge of my Stanley FatMax Utility Knife. I'm pretty sure I picked this up from one of my Hobby Heros Viv from Rubbish in Rubbish Out used it on his Dessert Table click HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xok2tqBEhvQ&feature=youtu.be&t=1m24s) for the link to the youtube video.

Hope that helps Helznicht it's a pretty fast and effective way of getting a reasonable outcome. Just remember you need to seal your foam with something non-reactive like white/PVA glue or acrylic paint before use and sort of spray paint or use a foam friendly spray paint.

Thanks for the walk-through!  Yeah I plan coat in thinned white glue and get a bit of fine sand sprinkled on them to give some surface so to do some quick brush highlighting.

I've done that with standard expanded foam in the paste it works really well. Adding just a touch of a contrasting colour or solid grey/black will help to ensure you can see where you are getting good coverage of your white glue solution.

Best of luck and look forward to seeing how you fair. ;)

Little update got those two hounds more or less to table top.

I'll do there bases all together with the rest of the Force to keep it consistent. I've also left the eyes undone because I need to decide what the best contrasting colour will be for the whole force. Everything will have glowing eyes to represent possessions or malice.

Probably green I think.

Also got home today from work and saw a parcel in my letter box.

I've got 2 things on order from overseas (I'm Australian Based) 1 is a warband of amazing models from Red Box Games (American Based) and the other is some very nice terrain pieces mainly treasure orientated from Ristuls Extraordinary Market (Poland Based) now normally anything from Poland takes roughly 2 or 3 weeks to arrive. The US on the other hand takes 4 to 6 weeks and since I ordered the Ristuls Extraordinary Market products first I'm am very much surprised to get my Red Box Games parcel first. Maybe I should be worried I've lost my treasure. :(

Finally I do split shifts on Monday so rather than potter around work getting NOT paid for 2 hours I went to the local variety store to look for toys to use as random encounter monsters.

Magilla Gorilla,Gorilla for sale.

I for one know I wouldn't want to take on a nearly one story Gorilla which doesn't mind a bit of man flesh.

Thats about it for now I'm soooo tired working too much with 2 jobs one as a fabour anyway you get the drift I'm in for this another 3 weeks and then anyone else who asks me to bail their kitchen out cause their Head Chef/s have left will not like my answer in return.

Stopped at my hobby buddies house on the way home tonight. He told me I needed to pick something up he had finished.

5 fully painted and based Wolves it looks like our random encounter monsters are going to be fully fleshed out it!

Love the variance in colours Mick has used and those Tundra tuft's from miniNatur are just awesome. Along side the flock snow effects.

Will be easy to pick his work from mine I'll be on round bases and painted like shit in comparison to his work on square bases. But that said I'm also like 15 years his junior and a young family man yeap that's my excuse.  :P

Also when I stopped at Mick's house to pick up those wolves he brought down his big box of minis to be worked on to show me some privateer press model's he had and in an sneaky little zip lock bag I noticed a large winged model.

Seeing my interest Mick pulled it out. Turned out to be a winged vampire lord. Which is exactly what I wanted so it's mine now had to assemble it one of my favourite undead minis will make a great addition to my evil necromancer warband.

Or

Just a great random encounter monster.

That might do it for tonight I have another early start tomorrow should really hit the sack for a few hours kip before work. :(

Although I have a LONG way to go (and actually decided to take it all the way prepping for next years expansion), a super sneak-peak at the library, using Vissy's technique (although without as much skill or patience).

I disagree they look tops mate is an easy method that returns simple effective terrain. Besides your models help sell it as well.

Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they are the old orc and goblin Wolves from the chariots and Wolf riders.

Hope that helps and thanks for stopping by everyone.

Yeah you're right they're old games workshop model plastic wolves from their goblin range, got rid of all my goblins years ago but now wish I'd kept the wolves for frostgrave.

Nice homemade bookcase Helznicht.

Thanks for sharing

l got some more airbrush work done tonight.

Magilla Gorilla is as done as I can be bothered with him since he is a cheap plastic toy. There are mould lines on it I can't really remove without cutting, sanding and green stuffing back in the details so I decided to just give it a light sand a live with it.

Creepy bastard isn't he.

I based him off Snowflake the Albino Silverback Gorilla (http://i.huffpost.com/gen/1194752/images/o-ALBINO-GORILLA-INBRED-facebook.jpg) that past away a few years ago cheeky bastard he was.

The vampire lord also got the same treatment as the rest of my necromancer warband. Basically I'll keep building things this week and get everything to this same level. Built, basic sand and gravel basing then primed and first primary red highlights.

One the warband is all there I'll batch paint each bit string with skulls and faces and so on so I use them danger mixes and get it done quicker to the same standard.

Finally I will do the bases all in one fell swoop along with an random encounter monsters I have finished at that point.

Thats it thanks for checking in as usual I'm off to bed.

Have being really struggling with the Frostgrave Soldiers plastics partly because I'm not happy with the same sprue 4 times but mainly because I don't like the heads. While suitably generic and fit the theme overall they don't quite have the mean spirited look of men who would align themselves with a Necromancer for reward.

So I've being searching and searching for something local I could use and I've found heaps of things head swaps and what not even have a nice iron skull mask I could recast like a billion times to get what I want for my soldiers. But then I remembered Victoria Miniatures and I went to look what they might have first thing that popped up was the Penal Guard Heads and I'm like YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Wait I have a set of these already in my bits box its all coming up Vissy tonight. Need to cut out the bodies a bit to make them fit.

The ranged part of the warband with mad eye Mike doing his best to silhouette his mate's.

He might be a little jelly since he can't hit the side of an angry owlbear which kind of explains the eye patch.

The heavy hitters with 3rd scariest man in the band assuming you count the boss as a man still "The Skinner" with his signature shield which is decorative. The mask however is not decorative!

Finally Johnny and his mook mate's. There so busy forgetting their names and places they can't decide if their thugs, thieves or treasure hunters.

No one cares as long as they bring home the goods or take the first volley of arrows.

All in all much much happier now I've still got 3 Sprues left with another 10 bodies on them for use with other warbands or to flesh out the Necromancer if I want but will have to source some new heads to further that aim!

Got allot of green stuffing to go with them tomorrow before some priming and first 3 red highlights to get them to the standard where everyone else is now. wink emoticon

Thanks man,

Noticed I screwed my IMG tag on my old post fixed that now.

One thing I forgot to mention I hate models with moulded bases; this was my first time dealing with them and I'm hoping last time.

Had the same issue myself, Bob Olley is a great sculptor but his style is a bit cartoony for my taste.  I've been using only a few of the heads from the box and supplying the rest from (mostly) Perry with a few Gripping Beast sprinkled in.  Ideally once my Fireforge order finally gets here I'll use some of those as well.

Is it a single piece that whole centre section?

I really like those little tower/keeps I will borrow that idea I have something very similar on the works but wanted them to be suitably ruined like my walls.

No, the corners interlock, like a puzzle:

Very modular, I can use them for castle walls also.

The keeps are the $5 Michaels special birdhouses. https://www.michaels.com/artminds-wooden-birdhouse-castle/10449620.html

The small top keeps and bases are just glued in, a little convincing with a hammer gets them apart.  I bought 4, so all I have to do is move the towers to the 4 corners and I have a Keep also.

Well its being a very interesting weekend I did a bit of a marathon painting session late Friday night and as usual got less done than I like and to a poor standard but in the end I got what I wanted to an acceptable level for a trip to the games club on Saturday. Didn't actually have a game of Frostgrave OR Infinity lined up. Had both kids with be but thought what ever better than sitting at home NOT painting and just walking in circles cleaning up after the kids so bags were packed and kids were bundled into the vehicular motor device and to the club we did go.

Delighted to hear a hearty cheer upon my entrance and after good chinwag with all my friends at the club plus some crying from my usually incredibly stoic boy James I was happy to meet Borzag (http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=181199) who has just moved back to sunny QLD after some times in the southern wastelands and he had is second warband still BNIB with him so I said lets through some things on the table and for ######s and giggles bash out way through a introduction game.

Now it was easily excluding the many distractions caused by my kids one of the best games I have ever played. It was fun, cinematic and a story is already growing and surrounding both of our warbands that I will tell a little later in my first AAR for now in this post I'll put up some shots of what I got done so far and what I have to add to the warband/minis for the game.

First off my order from Ristuls Market (http://ristulsmarket.com/) came in and I went straight to work on the best pieces the cursed treasure!

I was able to grab some plunder from the BSS at the club here are some old Marauder Dryads I want to use for demons and what not.

These little Seishins from Maulifaux will make great summoned demons in the forms of Imps!

A shot of the force I decided to use for my first game. More on how that faired later!

The Vampire Lord, Wraith and my Ice Demon all got some more paint on them.

Finally where I'm at with my Wizard and Apprentice I have changed the head on that Necromancer like 5 times and finally went back to the original. I'm going to replace him I have come to loathe the model but for now he is all I have. Still digging the Wright King though sweet sweet model.

Anyway painting I suck at and apparently I'm not much better at playing the game I'll post up my AAR soon!

Right so Borzag and I got our first game in and I guess I better get the boring part out of the way first.

I took the following.

My Wizard has the following spells.

Raise Zombie 8
Bone Dart 8
Drain Life 10
--
Fleet Feet 14
Summon Demon 14
Control Animal 14
--
Push 14
Enchant Weapon 14

While Borzah brought the following.

With these spells.

Summon Demon 12
Imp 10
Leap 8
--
Bone Dart 10
Elemental Shield 12
Control Animal 14
--
Heal 12
Fleet Feet 14
(grr forgot the last spell, will have to grab it later) Yes the much feared grr forgot spell!

ANYYYYYYYWAY!

There was some really telling things between our lists I lack any ranged attackers except my Wizard and Apprentice using Bone Dart and I didn't take Leap as a spell (not sure I can though) which is important as you will learn. Finally when your speccing your level 0 Wizards spells with a casting value of 14 are bad cause you need a 14 or better to cast on a D20 and your ###### apprentice needs a bloody 16 or better so my taking a whole bunch of 14's wasn't a great idea but hey learnings and all that jazz.

Table overview shots.

Side just used my walls because that's what I had on me. P.S. NEED MORE SINKERS IN THEM WALLS! They still move too much but that said most only have 1 in them as I was being cheap and didn't want to add more than I needed too.

Borzags side with his Reaper: Darkhaven warband. You can see James my little boy making off with my tape measure this is why I bring two.

My side with my mixed bag of GW, Frostgrave and Reaper minis plus Hena my little girl being all cute and totally not breaking my man dollies.

FYI this table was still probably too open and we played 12 inch deployment zones not the 9" ones the game asks for its a 4' by 4' board not 3' by 3' so density and ranges might be a little more telling next game but this was meant to be fast hard learning so we rolled with what we had.

Enough of this onto the fun story telling part!

Sitting deep within the crypt that was for lack of a better word his home upon the same stone throne he had for many a year sat was Dr. Bonesplitter the eerie green light that was eyes in the empty sockets of his skull intensified as he thought about the strange horned wizard he had run into earlier in the day. This Demon or lack of a better word had cost him dearly his favourite Warhound was molested so badly by some Beastmen that is must surely have fled Felstad by now. Plus  one of his particularly useful lackies adept at finding his way through tight spaces and into places he wasn't supposed to be would need to be tended to by some sort of healer after barely fending off some Demon hound. Men were easy to come by but sometimes they lacked the right aptitude or scruples he needed and to lose good men irked him as did all things that keep him in the decrepit body he was forced to endure for so long.

This Demon Wizard was a perplexing problem for him for clearly his wasn't of the same calibre of the runtlings that now infested the once great city. He reeked of power a sort of power he was used to when he was still young and Felstad stood strong as a place of great learner and where people like himself could go to further their skills and arts. But when their dualed earlier in the day neither could easily best the other and even their followers seemed to be evenly matched but still this Demon Wizard was a a perplexing problem.

Dr. Bonesplitter wanted so badly to move back to a body of flesh and bone, to best the curses he had be forced to endure and most of all be rid of the geas that kept him so strongly bound to this place never to leave Felstad as long as he remained in the Hero Kings body or so it would seem. Perhaps this Demon Wizard could be of use in finding a way to best one of all of his problems but soo much was unknown about him he needed more information he couldn't approach the Demon not knowing he had a followers enough to meet him easily in battle. He would need a way to gather more intelligence another way.

"GARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII get in here you sorry excuse for apprentice you are needed."

Gari came slinking through the door seconds later as he was never far from his masters chambers without task.

"Yes Master what do you need?"

"I have need of one of those pesky birds you are so fond of feeding!"

"You wish to hear a song bird sing then master?"

"No you fool I want one of the black ones the ones with silent wings and watchful eyes!"

"Ahh a Raven is what you seek master I will have one of the men lure one and cage it for you."

"Good and while you're about it get my former masters All-See Ball (http://www.fantasyfiki.com/index.php?title=All-See_Ball) you and I have more to review upon your return with it; there is much that must be learnt from that encounter today most notwithstanding why you are so incapable of doing anything useful in a battle!"

"Masssssster I"

"Be quite fool go have a Raven caught and brought to me and fetch the ball!"

Gari returned some minutess later with the All-See Ball and one of the Dr. Bonesplitters men came down into the chamber with much angered Raven flapping and cawing in a cage.

"You silence that bird!"

"You want that I should kill it boss?"

No I want that you to teach it to do song and dance numbers of course I mean kill it boffin I only pay you for one thing and its to kill things which I can't be bothered killing myself now throttle the bird and begone before I have Gari throttle you!

The man was quick to obey once he understood and cared not for the bites and scratches he took before the bird was lifeless in front of his master.

"Gari watch closely as while your may be adept at reanimating things I am about to show you how to give something purpose beyond their basis needs to cause damage and harm to the living."

Dr. Bonesplitter got up from his throne and walked over to the tomb where the birds carcass lay and began to chanted an incantation familiar to Gari yet different to in tone and with odd tongue his staff began to glow and finally the small skull atop it opened and green gas spilled fourth entering the Ravens now limp form and suffusing it with meaning and a form of life again. The bird flapped stupidly for some minutes trying to right itself before falling off the tomb where it previously lay. Finally being able to fly back to table and settled upon the All-See Ball next to where Dr. Bonesplitter was.

"Bird you know who your master is?"

The bird cawed in ernst and looked deeply into Dr. Bonesplitter's skull.

"Good Gari activate the All-See Ball and have it show what your saw today I need a good shot of the Demon Wizard and his Apprentice."

Gari did as he was told and the All-See Ball skipped from scene to scene of parts of the battle Gari could remember finally all his could recall was there swimming about in the ball for his master to recall at will.

"Good good you saw enough to be of use here and enough for me to educate you in how to be marginally less useless in the future."

Dr. Bonesplitter brought to the fore a image of the Horned Demon Wizard and his Horned Demon Apprentice.

"Bird sear there images into your sight you will go and you will find them you will watch them and report to me all you see!"

The bird cawed and flapped its wings.

"Good now go and find them do not come back until you have something of interest to report!"

Dr. Bonesplitter turned to Gari.

"I will teach you more of what I did today but first let the men who are still able go for the night to their drink and wenches but before they leave let them know I've 10GC for anyone who can find out where that group came from today, either their location now or from what realm they belong for they are not of this world and I wish to know more lots lots more."

With that Gari was a way to pass on his masters missive to the men and to note as much as he could of what his master had done to the Raven. Much he still had to learn from the old creature much he had to know before he could finally be rid of the wretched fools tirades and insults.

Meanwhile Dr. Bonesplitter was busy reviewing the images that abounded in the All-See Ball hearing snippets of the conversations and shouting during the battle between Gari and the men closest to him. Slowly in his mind he caught bits and pieces of what the Demons and Beastmen on the other side of the ruins were yelling two names stood out the most and it took him some time to decipher them or more to the point articulate them into a tongue he knew well.

Damien that was the name of the Demon Wizard he was clearly a Summoner for his apprentice the one they called Daniella brought forth a small Imp like creatures that resemble the minions following this Damien. Interesting why would Demon Summoners be here in Felstad summoning yet more Demons to follow them. Clearly something was afoot and now all Dr. Bonesplitter needed to do was figure out what that was and where he stood to gain or lose from it.

This Damien was he to be a Competitor, a Competitor or a had Dr Bonesplitter found a worthy Nemesis?

Only time would tell and something Dr. Bonesplitter had was time!

So there is a back story building around Dr. Bonesplitter and Lord Damien the summoned Demon who decided his liked this world and the look of the jacket the 'summoner' who summoned him was wearing so much he would stay and bring a few of his friends.

Our adventure will continue the next time Borzag and I meet up and see what happens. Borzag is ahead a little on GC and items but we both leveled from 0 to level 1 last game thanks to some lucky casting so thus far no king making lets see how we go. As for the actual game we played here is a little All-See Ball play by play break down.

My left flank has my Wizard, Knight and a Thief on it my first and treasure is just behind thand 4 block wall to my front. Never got it off the table because Borzag was able to stop me thanks to some good tactical play on his part!

Opposite me is his Wizard, a Warhound, Thief and Thug you can see the treasure nearest him is already in contest in this photo as his Thug grabbed it just before I took that photo.

My middle has my Apprentice, my Templar and Thief in there with my closest treasure token. This is the only one I got off the board. Forgot that you can take it off Left, Right or Back (my table edge) but not the Opponents so I never tried to take anything to the side silly move on my part.

Opposite is his Knight, a Thug, 2 Archers (Screw them things so hard) and his Apprentice.

Borzag moving his thief up toward me to give me grief!

Note in the image previous how that Thug wasn't 10" back behind his Wizard well that is what mutha F'ing leap does if successfully cast it leaps a model 10" so it's GREAT for getting treasure to the back of field where you activate and move off the table!

Know what else Leaps REAL GOOD Knights! So this fight took a long long long time to finish up.

Meanwhile on the left flank my Thief was eaten by his Warhound, he leaped in his Thief who was inturn eaten by my Vampire I mean Knight and my Wizard exchanged many a Bone Dart and Drain Health with his Wizard until I was running low of health and ducked behind cover. The Knight tried to scuttle off the board with the treasure but was too slow and the game ended.

Here you can see his nasty Beastman molesting my dog for like 3 turns its touched it inappropriately luckily there is no RSPCA in Felstad because if there was the thing would be going to jail!

My Thug tried his best to leg it off with that treasure but Borzags Archers and Apprentice would have none of that and the game ended with him about 1" away from the edge.

End of game saw us with Wizard, Apprentice, 1 Thug and 1 Warhound left on the table EACH! Everything else was either off table with treasure to flat on its arse.

I walked away with 100XP for spells casts, 40GC and a Grimoire for Telekinesis. I lost 1 thief miss next game and 1 Warhound Died.

He walked away with 100XP for spells casts 90GC, a Grimoire for (insert something here) and a Orb of Power. Can't remember his loses 1 miss a game and 1 dead I think as well.

Was a better outcome for him but not by much its a hard game we fubbed some rules but nothing game breaking good fun though! So there is a back story building around Dr. Bonesplitter and Lord Damien the summoned Demon who decided his liked this world and the look of the jacket the 'summoner' who summoned him was wearing so much he would stay and bring a few of his friends.

Mate good to see you haven't seen you much on Data Sphere lately what's being cracking?

Frostgrave seems to work pretty well so far hopefully Borzag and I will get our next game in on Saturday the 10th of October. I should also get some Infinity in on the same day.  ;D

I have to redact something from my last post.

Quote from: Borzag
Actually I walked away with 150XP, 80GC (+20 in the bank), a Grimoire with Bind Demon (LEARNT!), and the Orb of Power.  Nobody died (yay!), but Anissa the Thief is missing the next game.

Definitely a good game :) I'm still decluttering and doing some exploration here, but should be able to continue my band assembly in the next few days (for both my bands).

Like I said he got allot more than I did need to respect my force for our next encounter paying to enlist lost models and what not.

Still should be really fun.

I've been working mostly, but you can see some of my ideas on my blog http://fiendsinwaistcoats.blogspot.com/
I'm looking forward to your next game.

Slight Update,

I've spent a good few hours looking for my sinkers to put more sinkers in those foam terrain pieces. Can't find them given up going to have to get some more. :(

Anyway since that failed figured I would partially base my minis for the next game. Since I'm getting really really frustrated with painting them. I realise now that I've never had to deal with leather, clothe and the like much so all these soldiers are a P.O.S for me to paint.

Meh,

Here's where we stand as of giving in to sleep tonight.

Reasonably happy with the Wizard cause Armour I can paint Armour! The Apprentice is getting replaced as soon as I find something not terrible like this model to replace him.

Wraith is giving me the shits as well. But happy with the Ice Demon and Vampire Lord is coming along ok.

Middle Archer is the only close to finished block colours model and you can see why I'm getting hung up on this cloth business. :(

Anywho snow can go onto the bases after I finish painting them. Need to protect it from possible spills or over spray/paint anyway.

Thanks for reading.

Sitting deep within the crypt that was for lack of a better word his home upon the same stone throne he had for many a year sat was Dr. Bonesplitter the eerie green light that was eyes in the empty sockets of his skull intensified as he heard the flutter of wings coming down the hallway towards him.

In mere moments a Raven came barreling out of the darkness and landed upon his All-See Ball.

"GARIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII get in here you groveling pile of excrement get in here."

Gari came shuffling in from the passageway which lead to his cell and smaller area which he used for his experiments.

"Yes Master how can I be of assistance"

"LOOK fool can you not see with those sorry excuses you call eyes? The spy we sent to from the Demon Summoner is back. Activate the All-See Ball and let us know what it knows!"

Gari walked over to where the bird was and used a small enchantment on the All-See Ball. The bird cawed and flapped its wings before sitting flush atop of the ball almost as if it was a overly large egg. In any other situation it would have being comical but in this situation it was just bizarre.

Images began to flash inside the ball as the birds last few days comings and goings were absorbed by the enchantments within the ball. Snippets and glances of beasts, men and beastmen were seen but nothing of note of either Damien the Demon Summoner or Danille his Apprentice. Till they neared what must of being only mere hours earlier that day. The bird had clearly being perching near a Tavern not one known to Gari or Dr. Bonesplitter or any of his men for surely the reward he put out should have brought them news sooner. But a tavern it was none the less and the bird had seen a party set out from what was most likely it's keg room door. A large group larger than one would think normal and clearly near its centre was Damien the Demon Summoner along with many of the beast and demons they had faced previously.

Dr. Bonesplitter began to cackle madly I have you now DEMON!! The cackling immediately put Gari on edge he often wondered about his master's sanity but this was clearly not the laugh of anyone sane. He turned to look at this master.

"Master we known where they are based now what is your plan?"

Dr. Bonesplitter continued to watch the All-See Ball earnestly seemly ignoring the question at first.

"Ohh yes we do but it will take some time to find the actual Inn itself but that is fine. I however suspect I know where they might be heading North of here only a few good hours walk even for weaklings like you there remains but one part of a Summoning Circle. It would not appear to be much if one stumbled upon it and didn't understand there is more to it than there seems it's part of a system that was used before by Wizards much more learned than you are likely to ever see today. However it was damaged long ago and I suspect I know why this Damien is here now or at least what he may try next.

Gari was confused as always his master talked as if he too was as long lived or experienced as he was and assumed he knew of things that Felstad was like in the past or that the current Wizarding World wasn't at its pinnacle of its power. Right then mid ponder and had he being able to see himself he would understand what followed next Gari was smashed square in the side of the head with a Bone Dart. Dazed, confused and lucky that his master wasn't a total sadist Gari recovered himself and bowed his head. I

"I'll be getting the men and hounds ready then shall I Master?"

YES GARI!! You are by far the dumbest, most useless, sorry excuse for an apprentice I have ever seen I've dealt with drunk, moraless whores in the middle of the moon's days with more sense than have in your skull. Ready them all any that can walk and fight we go now and hopefully we can spring an ambush or at least catch them unawares!

Gari limped quickly away still dazed and muttering under his breath.

Dr Bonesplitter called out after him.

I heard that Gari I don't know what a Union is but if you tell them whoever they are what you just said I'll teach you a nice new spell you have never seen before. Only one catch I'll be using it on you and let me tell you right now it will make you allot more like some drunk, moraless whores in the middle of the moon's days that I have known. Infact come back here; MAYBE IT MIGHT MAKE YOU BETTER!

His masters cackling faded as Gari limped even quicker away and the Raven came speeding by back out to wherever his master had sent it this time.

Sooo hopefully that fluff set this battle up because it was another fun one. We used the club terrain this time. I am always pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of terrain that the Blind Pig Gaming Club (http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showforum=214) has. Thanks obviously allot to Blind Pig (http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showuser=4465), Heble (http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showuser=2311) and the many other helpers over the years who have made it such a great club.

This board is actually 6 snow tables and I do mean 6' by 4' tables for WHFB basically all dumped onto one! I love skirmish games with dense terrain so much better and cinematic anyway.

Table setup looks like this its only one of the board so it 3' wide by 4' long.

You can see the remains of a summoning circle someone has since just used it to help form a fence line around their cottage. They bolted their doors very quickly it seems or were long gone before the battle was joined.

The fluff came after the table and the battle actually which is great these games are literally writing themselves not the other way round.

Onto the forces I had the following.

NOTE: Thief on the bottom is missing this game with a previous injury from last game.

I have hired a new thief with my little earnings from last game. I also learnt the Spell Telekinesis found that Grimoire last game. I go into the battle with only 20GC and since I have reached LVL 1 I was able to create a base I choose a Crypt not cause its really usefull but because it fits my little bit of fluff. That lowers my Raise Zombie casting by 2.

My Wizard has the following spells.

-------------------------
NECROMANCER
-------------------------

Raise Zombie 6 (Thanks to my Crypt)
Bone Dart 8
Drain Life 10

-------------
ALIGNED
-------------

Fleet Feet 14
Summon Demon 14
Control Animal 14
Telekinesis 12 (From Grimoire)

--------------
NEUTRAL
--------------

Push 14
Enchant Weapon 14

Jose/Borzag's force looks like this.

Less to note about his list but he has learned Bind Demon he found that in a Grimoire last game and has a Orb of Power and has given it to his Wizard which starts with 8 Charges I believe he uses 3 in this game. So 5 remain for next game need to remember that for bookkeeping. Also he choose an Inn as his base which comes into the fluff. He decided the original summoning/summoner who brought in into his plane did it in the cellar of this Inn and thought it a good enough place as any to stay. This takes him to a Max Warband size of 11 which sucks for me. :(

Spells now look like this.

------------------
SUMMONER
------------------
Summon Demon 12
Bind Demon 10
Imp 10
Leap 8

-------------
ALIGNED
-------------

Bone Dart 10
Elemental Shield 12
Control Animal 14

--------------
NEUTRAL
--------------

Heal 12
Fleet Feet 14

Onto the AAR/Battle Report itself.

Good "Wizard Sheet"! It's a webpage or home-made?

http://www.battletortoise.com/frostgrave/roster.html

I believe it was made by a fellow Lead Adventurer member. Its really best for just specing up your starting force since it lacks most of the things you can do with your force post your first game really such as no way to add a 11th member or account for summonings/before game spells like Zombie.

Still it works and a quick screenshot and a little cropping you can dump in in a word document and use it as your Wizard sheet for each game and just hand write or type in the rest of the details like I do.

Other options are the google spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1c0WNlIfzD6Qzarto2pemd9ypiMKoDCyEOsw-HSv_v6Q/edit#gid=0) the Battle Scribe (http://www.battlescribe.net/). All have there good up's and downs this works for me soo far.
