Title: Looking for warhound alternatives.
Post by: spoony_bard on 18 August 2015, 09:54:36 PM
Not that I don't like the official Frostgrave warhounds but I fancy something a bit more shaggy for the cold climes of Felstad.

So, looking for pointers to (preferably) some Irish wolfhound sort of beasts but other big and hairy breeds will also be considered.

All help will be greatly received  :)

Warlord Games, Hail Caesar range Celts, have some Irish Wolfhounds and the Ancient Britons have some nice mastiffs.

I'm using the Warlord Games warhound models. They've got some great Irish Wolfhounds, and English Mastiffs from their Dark Ages range.

I'll grab some pictures when I get home.

I'm using the Stim Hounds from Anvil Industries. They're Sci-Fi, but I reckon if I paint the armour to look like worn leather, it will work well.

GW Mordheim Warhounds are also pretty cool

And some mentioned above

Clan Wars also had a rather cool hound

Westwind do a wolfhound. It comes in a pack with Russian officer types. Only problem is that is not showing in the Romanov Holiday section of their Vampire Wars catalogue which is where I would expect it to be.

Thanks folks, the Warlord Games hounds look perfect, exactly what I had in mind. Like the look of the Midlam ones too. Now I just need to resist the urge to order a bunch of other models from that Celtic range for yet another warband  ;)

Not hairy, but the ex-Vendel range (now Sergeant-Major Miniatures) have two packs of very good mastiff-style hounds like the two on the right below. Five with collars and five without. Very nice models  :)

I've got an alternative war hounds part on my site http://thedicebaglady.net/frostgrave-alternative-war-hounds/ , currently just Crooked Dice and Otherworld and not shaggy, but I'll see about adding some of those other suggestions, as they are lovely.

Also to add

Gripping Beast http://www.grippingbeast.co.uk/LIV09_Running_Dogs_4--product--3284.html

These warhounds look a good size if you like them bigger too from Fantasy Worlds http://northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=5501

I've got some dogs from Northstar.

In my opinion the best choice for cold climat (also handler is a perfect thug :))

@Captain Blood...not hairy but very nice indeed, those are now a definite possibility!

@Annie...I'm not mad keen on any of the hounds on your site I'm afraid but I do have my eye on some of your female models and the heads from your other thread. Just need to convince myself that sculpting hair can't be as hard as I imagine it to be :)

@Annie and Kadzik...those Northstar ones are even closer to what I'd pictured than the Warlord ones. Love the dynamic poses of them. Looks like Northstar will be taking even more of my hard earned cash!

Lots of fodder for the brush, here!

Also, the ancient Jes Goodwin Wood Elves War Hounds have a bit fur to keep the cold winds out (if you can get your palms on some):

Deezee Miniatures has dogs and mastiffs. Bigger than average 28mm, so heroic scale but I like them for fantasy

Miniature Mojo has German Shepherds and Border Collies (as well as Wolves), though I'd think you'd be more interested in the Shepherds than the Collies for warhounds.  lol

Not sure about that... A pack of ravening intelligent Border Collies...

Hi - I was looking for some slender nosed short haired dog models like the two on the left that look more like Greek hunting dogs (not Mastiffs). I can't seem to find or ID them online.
Thanks in advance.

I use either the wild dogs from Northstar.
Or I use the Pugs from Reapers familiar pack.
