I'm currently basing up some Late Romans and opponents and I thought I'd start a little thread.
Here's the first unit of Roman guard cavalry (the Schola Scutatorium Prima), painted for me by Shaun Watson (Redzed); I did the shields and basing. I'm going for deeper basing these days so that I can make the units look more animated (and to better protect the paintwork!).

Lovely Work !
Once the Greeks hit critical mass I'm shifting to Late romans, will use this thread for inspiration :).
-
Amazing bunch, Simon, Shaun did a great job on them :-*
-
Thanks chaps, more to follow...
-
Very nice. It would be nice if late Romans were available in plastic.
Michael.

Good looking unit Simon. 60mm deep? Funny, in the olde days when WRG was king I made my cavalry bases 50mm instead of the recommended 40mm deep for that reason. With scale creep 60mm is looking good!
I do like the idea of forming an army which has known named units.

Hi Garry,
These are 70mm deep. I' ve decided to standardise on 67mm deep for future units in this army, though, because I can fit 5 such units in a 4L Really Useful. It certainly is scale creep! Not so long since it was 40mm.
Named units are great, I love the research.

Here's the next unit; the Equites Dalmatae Passerentiaci from the army of the Magister Equitum in Gaul. Again painted by Shaun except for the shields and basing which I did. There's a little more on them here (http://here).
-
Love your basing, what product of flock do you use? I really like the color/blend.
-
Hi Nevyen,
I use a mix of colours mostly autumn but with wintry colours mixed in. I also use half a dozen different types of tuft and then dry brush the lot with Buff Titanium and matt varnish.
Best, Simon
-
Drybrushing the flock is a new on me, ill have to look into that.
-
The dry-brushing is really effective, especially on long tufts- it makes the tips of the tuft look dried out. Also brings the different colour tufts together.

This is a command stand depicting Saint Germanus of Auxerre, who was a militant bishop who supposedly led the Romano Britons to a victory over the Saxons and Picts in the early 5th Century. Minis were again painted by Shaun Watson (Redzed).
-
Very cool and very dynamic :)
-
Superb!! This is such a great period to paint/game!!
-
Totally missed these over the weekend. :o Fabulous stuff! Painting Late Romans at the moment, too, so yours/redzed's are a great inspiration.
-
Thanks chaps! Lots more on the painting/basing tray at the moment.

Great work!

Here's another unit painted by Shaun and based by me, the Equites quarti clibanarii Parthi. I am really delighted with these; lovely Gripping Beast miniatures painted by a true artist. Below, in cuneus.

They are very smart!!
I must get on with my Pendraken Late Romans. Some day.
-
Meow!
-
Thanks chaps! When you blow a photo up that big, and the minis still look OK, then you know they aren't too shabby!
-
Lovely work 8) 8)
cheers

Lovely looking units, and for people like me with limited time to do the research an excellent resource. :)
-
Really lovely stuff Simon- I've been a bit slow on the uptake in why you were painting up Late Romans presently (it's just dawned on me now! I must be tired with all this moving business!!)
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
See you on Sunday :)
Darrell.
-
Happy with that :)
-
Thanks chaps!
Hi Darrell, we probably won't need them on Sunday; James, Steve and Scrivs have such marvellous collections they will be redundant! Mostly I'm basing them for my November game at the Wargames Holiday Centre, and because... they are really super!
More cats tomorrow.

Aww.... that's a shame- bring one unit along so i can take a snap or two at least :)
i've seen James and Steve's collections in the form of WAB (back in the day!) and Dux Britorum (Partizan demo). They looked amazing- I believe some of the mini's might have belonged to Tom too(?)

Sounds interesting..... something that i've b=never really considered as a holiday thing.... however, I'm single now so no-one else to consider so why not!!??
:)
See you Sunday.

Here is my other unit of cats; the Equites Catafractarii Iuniores from Britannia. This is an old unit that I have recently refurbished to my current painting and basing standard; they scrubbed up well! One thing that had always bugged me about the unit was that their spears were too tall to fit in my storage boxes. I took the spears off, shortened and repainted them.

Wow these are coming thick and fast, awesome and motivating as i will have to get onto painting my own !
-
It's a lot quicker when it's just basing. :-)
-
lol i bet :)
-
Superb!!

Thanks chaps!
Andy, was gaming with several of the WAB illuminati today- James Morris, Steve Jones, Scrivs and Mog. A super day!

A couple more units of super Vandal minis from the brush of Shaun Watson, giving me three units total. I'm now fretting about how I'm going to get the required infantry painted...

The General and Standard, which range did these models from from? they are really we done.
Just got my unit of Late Roman Heavy Cavalry out of storage after looking through this thread again. Once the greeks reach stage one, I think ill paint some roman cavalry.
-
Hi Nevyen, they are all Gripping Beast minis, Early Germans, I think. Very nice minis although the horses are a bit dated.
Best, Simon

Brill :-* :-* :-*
