Hi All,
I have always loved the weird moments of history, times where there are ridiculous is stated and is often told in history classes. Among my favorites is the story from Suetonius about Caligulas declared war on Neptune, where soldiers the mad emperor ordered his soldiers to whip and stab at the sea and then to collect sea shells as booty. This opened great opportunities for conversions - Incitatus the commander horse, half cut roman soldiers wading into water, sand forts and more.
This is an army that has been on my to do list for almost 6 years, back when the only wargame people played out in Australia was Warhammer Ancients and soldiers were based individually. I posted a test figure here http://wabforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=9735 but put the project on hold. Fast forward I won some figures from Warlord games and the chance to make my dream army. I had 3 weeks to get the army ready for an Australian Impetus comp, so fewer figures worked out.
The Full Album is here and I'll try post more details later - http://imgur.com/a/vMUUl#0

Nice idea & nicely executed. How about doing a 'Neptune' army (should that be Navy ?)to oppose it ?
A friend does 'Hordes of the things' games with some weird armies & I can't help but think that players should make matched pairs of armies & take them to competitions. When playing with 'your' armies let your opponent have first choice of force.
On a slightly different tack, I have always had a fancy to do unusual armies, if only to confuse competition gamers:-
Royalist Roman (pre - Republic);
Imperial Russian Air force (pre - 1917);
Republic of Freedonia (an very short lived attempt to break away from the then newly independent Texas;
British Napoleonic with Red Indians (i.e. war of 1812);
etc. etc.

Nice idea. :)

Imgur doesn't seem to have an easy access option for your pictures' URL, though. You need an address which ends on *.jpg. Or just upload your photos into LAF's gallery (see the menu just below the header) and set links from there.

THANKS GENTS! Photos fixed, this is what I get for posting late and without coffee

What an amazing idea, seriously well executed.

Trident armed gladiators, dolphin chariots and mermaids.
I can see it now.
:D

The sea waves appear very realistic, nice project. 8)
Stuart.

Didn't Foundry use to have a line of seaelves/merfolk?
They would be a nice adversary for this army.
-
excellent !
I think i Was alone with original projects for compétition armies.......
Many thanks for sharing with us.

Weird you say?......

Not historical and the wrong scale. ::)

Lovely idea that's been beautifully executed.
-
Cracking idea, and lots of thought gone into each base. I can almost hear the soldiers laughing at the futility of it all.
-
I saw this army at Wintercon in Canberra in July. The pictures don't do it justice. Spectacular piece of work. Great idea, really well executed, the water effects are just brilliant.

Hey you guys! Thank you for all the kind comments, I just wanted to do something unique and fun and everyone has been absolutely fantastic and kind. For anyone who wants to try the base - woodland scenic water effects are your absolute friend. Shahbahraz were you in the Impetus Comp??
I'm particularly proud with Caligula, he was sculpted from the head and arm of a mantic ghoul, and the legs of an Agema Velite (pics below). I want to work on a few more units and some disorder markers, the guys from the Impetus tournament gave me some amazing markers ideas and I'd love to see them come to fruition.

Water way to go great stuff - so what you going to do with the legs?

Funnily enough, I thought of this, right now I have about 40ish pairs of legs, I was going to get a whole bunch of left over shields and make a teusteudo, considering you can only see heads, legs and shields. I have this covered :D
-
Excellent idea for the legs !
I appreciate all your stuff, and the caligua sculpting.
But why sculpt a roman in toga, when there is a lot of possibility in 28mm market to find a guy for this job ?
Cheers
Eric

This army looks fantastic, with lots of character.lovely conversions to produce a great themed force. Certainly ambitious to do the whole army in such a theme rather than just one unit. Good idea for using the leftover legs. Thanks for sharing

There are a great number of toga and emperor figures out there, but these are especially well for figures like Caesar, Augustus, Trajan and the like. For Caligula, there is a certain level of menace that I wanted, the warlord games caesar miniatures was a great candidate but believe it or not it came down to me having 1 week to finish this army and as I live in Australia - it was faster for me to sculpt and paint a figure from scratch, then to buy a $5 figure, pay $20 for postage and have it not arrive in time
-
Well done for a quick reaction then....

Hey all! One last update for now, I have been busy getting some auxiliary up s the army needed something that moved faster than a marching brick. There are some conversions about but unfortunately my phone camera isnt the best sorry.

:o :o
Wow!
That was a blast from the past!
And very grateful for an update too.
This has always been one of my favourite armies, so visually dynamic and original, and the new additions really uphold the high level of the rest of the army.
Wonderful!

Very nice update. :-* :-*
Using the plastics you could make 1 or 2 stands of some romans receiving a charge from the enemy inside the water. Just an idea. :)
-
What a really great idea. Looks so awesome.
-
Lovely work. The water effects are great. I was hoping to see legionaries battling with sea weed, or maybe a crab latched on to a toe sticking out of a soldier's caligae.
