Title: Nic-e's 15mm scratchbuilding. new figure sculpts and tanks.
Post by: nic-e on 11 September 2015, 06:18:44 PM
I have a bunch of 1/100 (15mm) figures I use for installation maquettes, and so I made them these hover tanks from old phone chargers.
I think they look a little bit 40k meets studio ghibli.

Cheers chaps.

A couple of questions for anyone willing to answer,
1: how does a game of (soft) post apocalyptic nomads sound? (imagine blade runner meets studio ghibli in terms of style)

And 2:If i were to cast up some of these and sell them as cheap chunky 15mm vehicles, would there be any interest ?

For your questions...

1) I'd certainly be interested in seeing that. Anything 'Ghiblipunk' gets my vote  :)

2) Asking the wrong person here but I would assume there would be some interest.

cheers

If i could afford genuine preiser figures i wouldn't be stealing peoples plugs, these are the cheap amazon recasts.  ;)

Also figured i'd post a closer shot of this little hover caravan, since i like the turret and just find it quite retro and funky . Sadly the photos have made it very shiny ,but it looks better in real life (honest gov!)

I like the lot. Well done.

I imagine the green one as a genuine military vehicle that has been wondering around for decades, whereas the others are more mobile bunkers/anti grav caravans pressed into service as homes and tanks.

Cheers! :)

These tanks are fantastic. Recycling old mobile phone chargers for that purpose is really inventive.

Anything with a Studio Ghibli vibe gets all my attention!

Yeah - these are really cute, and a whole world set with these would be lovely.

Great to hear that you'd all be interested in seeing more.

My brother in law dropped an old iphone charger round today. It's a nice back heavy shape and i'm thinking of adding a mast and some bunting to it ,maybe a serving window and making it into a travelling tea house.

After that i'm gonna see what i can do with a couple of sets of 1/72 tank tracks and some plastic cubes. I'm thinking mobile farm!

Started a new tank from an old apple charger. decided i wanted to add some ship like elements on this one ,i'm probably gonna add some bunting ,maybe a pirate flag and a bit of freehand to the side.

I'm not too sure what i want to do colour wise with it, i'm thinking chipped white paint and a bunch of rust, but since i'm back at uni soon it may take a while. I'm gonna be doing more of this......

......and a bit less of the cool stuff for a while.

wow, I really like this project nic-e!  :-*

The latest one is cracking, I'd paint it in the green scheme you did on the first tank. Olive green + red rust is a fantastic combo IMO!  8)

Nice conversion. Colour-wise I'd go with a light blue or green as suggested by Faber. White will make it too recognisable.

And at least you'll still have fun building/making pretty stuff.

Not white and I'd try to cover up the 'finger holes' with some panels maybe.

I would also put some sort of movement system on them as well.

Even if they are contragrav lift platforms they would still have some gribblies attached to the hull to make that happen. Personally though I tracks would work best. Oh and dazzle pattern on the latest one. Get that landship vibe happening.

There are a few gribblies on each one, wires and piping and such like, although they aren't in the photos. Personally i like the simple blocky look since it gives them a nice chunky silhouette, it stops them getting too cluttered which would be very easy at this scale, and it does away with trying to justify these heavy looking lumps moving around and instead just goes with the fantasy.

However, the dazzle camo idea os one i'll certainly be looking into, but probably ona future project when i start making the bigger ones i have planned..... :)

I've just rusted up the latest one and added the salt, so i'll be spraying it tomorrow morning.

I've also started sculpting a few nomads to go with the caravans and a refill station/tea house.

Just a little update, but i had a go at sculpting one of the 1:100 railway figures into a 15mm sci fi nomad chap.
Decided to go for a beard and aviator coat ,and i'm going to remove the wire gun and sculpt in some sort of lazer.
Personally i'm pretty happy with at as a first attempt at sculpting 15mm.

That sculpt looks really good. The idea of sculpting 15mm figures terrifies me.

I think having the railway figures as an armature helped alot, they're so thin you can just slap greenstuff on them.

Anyway, here he isbpainted looking alot like a 15mm version of me.

Don't worry,more plug tanks soon.

Very evocative!

As  you CAN use a self-portrait as an avatar, you could do far worse than that image. Trust me, people will be asking 'where can I get that fellow? My Walking Dead group SO needs it!'

Bit hard to tell from my somewhat older self portrait, but I've a bit more hair on the bottom end, and damn less than the top on  yours.  :D

I do like the Mak vibe of the tanks, though I'm not sure where I'd fit them in with what I've got. 'Soft apocalyptic' almost sounds like old Vaughn Bode cartoons. Again, not a bad thing.

Weirdly, the blue one made me think of the navigator's transport at the beginning of Lynch's Dune.  lol

He is my favorite. I think he captures that animatrix/blade runner style that i want to try and get.

Great stuff  8)

I like the proportions that the Preiser figures give, they certainly don't look like 15mm figures  8)

I decided on a dark grey scheme for the new tank, but since I just moved into my new uni house I don't have my airbrush. Turns out masking fluid just doesn't give as nice effect as salt chipping, so looks like I'll be repainting it with an all over grey and adding aging by hand.

I did paint up the gunslinger and the bandit tho, and I'm pretty happy its them.

Cheers chaps!

I finally got the latest tank done, since I'm without WiFi for the next week is given me plenty of time to paint. (sadly I forgot my transfers so I had to freehand this one,and for a fine art student my painting skills are RUSTY.)

Here it is, went with a sand grey in the end to fine it a more military feel than the others.
I've also started work on a couple of things that might see this go from a few scratch builds to something a little bigger, but more on that in the future..... ;)

So, this was in the garage of our new house! it's a nice chunky plug, and i'm thinking of adding some basic detailing so i can cast the hull to make a few of these as standard nomad grav caravans.

Also started more sculpts for figures and started work on some fluff to build up factions and background for the bizarre plug world i'm building.

Looks promising.

I think you need to think of some terrain (buildings) to fit this world.

Watched 'Howl's Moving Castle' the other week - Miyazaki's films have so much eye candy. Your creations could be the models for one of his films. There's other filmmakers too, but he just manages to capture something fun.

That keeps coming into my head when i think about the world i want to make for these models, something about the movements and the atmoshphere just fits, that romantic adventure style.

I am actually working on a tea house/inn at the moment, i thought i'd put it up already but i was wrong :)

Coming on great so far matey :)
I enjoy the style of the Ghibli franchise and think to have a game/miniature series set in that world would be fantastic.
keep up the good work :D
