A few LAF'ers may have seen or even got hold of some of my beehive huts, and a few may even have seen my thread in the Medieval board where I posted photos of a new (and I think greatly improved) hut that I've recently finished and have available for sale.
This thread will be used to document WIP of the terrain peices which I am working on in a more serious way in preparation for starting a webstore or something similar. I am pretty terrible at remebering to take snaps halfway through a builds, so I hope that you won't mind too much if completed items occasionally appear here!
The new hut, I've gone over the master since taking this photo and before pouring silicon to clean up some of the bubbles.

Oh generous giver of hard cover; stone walls. Four individual pieces including 2 different right-angled corners.

Here is the beginnings of a rectangular structure, which will form a base structure which will eventually do double duty as an oratory based on buidlings in Skellig Michael and elsewhere, and the walls of a stone built dwelling with a thatched/turf roof.

C&C always welcome, thank you!

Looking good so far and it's great to see a proper drystone wall 8) 8)
cheers

I haven't posted it up yet but your old thread inspired me to do some "stonework" of my own... :D
-
Superb.
Tony
-
Very nice pieces Zaheer. The walls look great :)
-
I really like the stone wall with the rubble core :-* :-* That would be proper for a variety of locations.

-
Excellent! Really nice to see some real dry stone walls! Looks incredibly reaslistic and I want some ;)
-
that drystone wall is the best I have seen.
-
I want some too!!! :o looks really great!!!!
-
The building is great for biblical skirmish. Will you do more of them???
-
Thank you everyone, very flattering! For those who have expressed an interest in getting hold of one, send me a pm and we will sort something out. I am in Malta for the week but will be looking to get back on top of things after that.
NurgleHH I can cast to demand if thats what you mean, but I will most likely be making more drystone structures. Perhaps if you have requests you can get in touch with me via pm to talk about anything in particular thay you might have in mind.
-
I do seem to be having problems getting behind the concept of WIP threads, I've gone a long way beyond this photo since taking it, but it shows the oratory at around the halfway point and hopefully it stands up to this kind of extreme close up. At the same time I'm aware there's not a lot more to see except for more blocks! My intention is to make pieces for wargamers and also painters/modellers for who the hobby primarily consists of this kind of thing.

I hope to finish it in the next couple of days, and will be making it available at the start of next week all going well (and assuming it doesn't finally tip me over the edge!).

The quality of your work is outstanding! I would love to know your technique for making the individual stone pieces.

I agree - a true inspiration.

I bet on plaster poured flat on plasticfilm and roughly cutted in shape while curing. The rest should be sanding and the usage of an iron brush for texturing!?

It is plaster, but as i'm currently putting together a little range for general sale I'll keep the trade secrets under wraps for a while ;). Needless to say the real secret is patience, patience and insanity!
-
I understand *taps nose*
I have the last one but not the first two.
-
I've dumped this on my mediveal thread, but here 'tis for everyone else.
(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a576/Shattered-Dreams-Parkway/20151009_110533_zpsydei2kvu.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/Shattered-Dreams-Parkway/media/20151009_110533_zpsydei2kvu.jpg.html)
A Dark Age oratory, or small church. Let me know if you're interested in one! I'm planning fantasy add-ons for this and the round hut to make them a bit more spectacular. Also I think I will work on bases with internal detail for when the range is complete, so hold fire if that appeals to you. Next up; something smaller!

That is a lovely thing. I'm interested in one :)
-
Amazing piece of work. You have way more patience than I.
-
Just a small update, I've made some doors for the hut and the oratory, and made a start on something a little smaller, a barrow portal (which is apparently impossible to get a good shot of!) which might be useful for a few more people.

Wow! They're very realistic, and they really capture the "ambience" of places like Skellig Michael.
Out of academic curiosity, what would the inside walls of the hut and the oratory have looked like? Naked stone like on the outside?
-
Thank you Roderic. From what I've read the interiors woukd be rendered or plastered presumably to keep out drafts, and the exteriors were left bare as the stones are all angled downwards they would be watertight. Perhaps if the exterior walls were not left bare water could wick it's way inside.
-
Thanks for the reply! I'm genuinely curious to know about these sorts of things. The eschewal of exterior rendering/plaster for the purpose of preventing moisture getting inside is something that wouldn't have dawned on me but it makes perfect sense now. I guess stone is in fact a pretty waterproof material, as long as one angles it the right way :)
-
Wow! Your buildings and walls are beautiful :)
-
Fabulous work. Pure art.
-
These are fantastic
-
Thank you Ash, Jo and Major!
A small update.

The current state of my next beehive hut, based on 'Cell A' at Skellig Michael, this will be a larger and more visually interesting version of the earlier huts.

The small tomb entrance is finished, and up for sale (click the sig). EDIT - Oh, the sig's gone. Too big perhaps, apologies if so. Click www.fogoumodels.co.uk (http://www.fogoumodels.co.uk)

Well, it may not be the most exciting update and progress has been very slow simply due to not having been able to sit down and work on it, but the new hut is coming along. We are roofin' at any rate. Lots of work to do making everything neater and hiding the join, but I am quite happy with the general effect. Thanks for looking.

Well what deciding to hold of on posting WIP shots which showed only incremental progress, extra christmas work and christmas illness, it has been a while, but it's probably 95% done. The interior will recieve a little bit of detail but apart from that it's a matter of cleaning up and getting it ready for the silicon. Something smaller (or with less stonework) next i think!
Forgive the crappy photographs, the curry's on the way.

Beautiful!
-
I'm a fan 8) :)
-
Dear Lord. That's epic Chris. I have to have one! 8)
-
:o
Incredible work Chris, absolutely amazing model.
-
That's some great craftsmanship! :-*
-
Very nice. They look quick to paint as well which is a bonus in my books, but you could also really go to town with different sort of weathered effects such as ivy and the likes if you have lots of time on your hands.
-
Another fantastic piece.
Thanks for sharing.
Tony
-
Outstanding! :-*
-
These look absolutely amazing; the thought of all that stonework makes my fingers ache, but the end result is lovely.
-
Pure art! :-*
-
Brilliant! I'd love to see one painted! :-*
Any chance to get a tutorial on your stone process?
-
Wow, i missed this thread but now... wow! Your stonework is simply awesome, i'm experimenting myself with stones recently, but with results far more mediocre than yours!!!
Again, congrats!
And please, show us some of your secrets! *_*
-
:o Nice work, a real one couldn't be much more work!
-
Good job! :-*
-
Thanks everyone, LAF is full of people whose work I greatly admire and it's very flattering and a great motivator to get praise from some of you for my dusty offerings!

Shouldn't be too long before I can make some available.

Yep, the earlier buildings were very quick to paint, I'd love to see what some others can do though!
-
Rather bloody splendid :-* :-*
cheers
James

No hints for the next project, but I'm staying in the dark ages.

Gorgeous! :-*
-
Now that is lovely :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Amazing texture! :o
Is that a cast or is that the original built up of many brick like your wee huts?
-
That is a great start!!! How did you fill the stones together without covering them in filler? I've had this issue in the past! =(
-
Thanks all! They are individual blocks, as for the filler 'mortar', I accepted a small loss of detail, I think it adds (?) something to the texture. I slapped it on, wiped it off then carefully used a toothbrush and scalpel to remove excess from the blocks.
-
That really is superbly well done.
-
Excellent wall right there. 8) 8) 8)
-
A thing of beauty, Chris. It's flat, so obviously not a broch... Some kind of rectilenear building?
-
Thanks all, I hadn't realised that I idn't reply to you all!
I've had a near complete re-think on this current project and have made the wall sections more modular and generic (albiet with an eye towards the Mediterranean middles ages) . I hope to make a variety of pieces over time and see what can be done with them.
Here are some terrible photographs

Top notch :D
That has masses of potential 8) 8)
cheers
James
-
Nicely done and very interesting for many possible projects.
-
They look top drawer, mate.
I will have to get me some of them.
:-* :-*
-
Oh, they are just perfect, aren't they! :-*
-
Looking great!
Additional ideas: Half lengths, quarter lengths, curved sections of a size to fit with the straight ones. You've probably thought of some of these already, I expect.
-
very nice project
-
To be honest, probably the best realized stone wall i've seen around. certainly better than mine experiments so far. Kudos.
-
Thank you everybody, it's always nice to get some praise after making a last minute swerve in another direction!
I'm currently working on a triangular gable-end piece so that a very basic cottage can be made, then I may make some of these available to LAF'ers if anyone's interested.
-
Most certainly!
-
Quick update, the first casts put together into a little abode, no gluing, they all hang together quite nicely. I must get some better photographs taken as I feel the texture on these pieces is much better than the walls I posted earlier in this thread, but hopefully you get the idea!

Top stuff 8) 8) 8)
I think they will sell very, very well :)
cheers
James
-
They look superb.
Seriously well done.
:-* :-*
-
Superb indeed!!!! Wow!
-
I've got a question though: How did you achieve that texture? The model itself is great, but the texture on the stones is what impressed me most!
-
Absolutely Fabulous.....
Tony
-
Lovely stuff Chris.
-
really nice indeed
-
Fantastic. When can we expect them to be for sale?
-
Matt, I will pm you. If anyone's interested and happy to provide their own roof I will make some available if you send me a message.
-
A small update. Obviously a lot of work to be done on the central ridge and the tiles showing at the 'ends', really I need to work out how I will cast the bloody thing. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and attempting my first two-piece molds and casting everything as one piece (whilst still making individual bits available). We shall see!

Nice textures. Also, do you have 6 fingers on your hand?
-
I am all palm no finger, and there's some foreshortening there! lol
-
Looks good :)
I wasn't going to mention the extra fingers lol
cheers
James
-
Awesome roof! How did you do the shingles? I tried with different approaches so far, i really like what you've done!
-
Wow, that taller hut is truly awesome. :-*
-
Awesome roof! How did you do the shingles? I tried with different approaches so far, i really like what you've done!
Thank you. The tiles are styrene rod, cut to shape and 'persuaded' into position. Wish it was cleverer (and easier!) than that but there you go.

Awesome - the pantile roof looks fantastic.

Brilliant! That will paint up nicely!

Oh, i see!
I did that with a lead sheet, worked very well, and for another project with a hard cardboard, bent for the shape. In both cases the result was molded, if i recall correctly, and cast in resin!
-
Well Sang, I hope to be able to say the same thing (once some materials arrive in the post). Both of your methods sound interesting, do you have any pics?
