Seperated by about 500 years, but the family resemblance is pretty clear :)

Footsore Aella - love this figure and would happily paint two or three more.

Warlord figures Germanic command type.

Excellent hues and I really love the faces :-* :-*
cheers

Wow, they are superb. Great work!
-
Excellent painting. The family resemblance is so close I was thinking Aella and some of his footsore 'mates' would make good command figures for early Germans or even Dacians and allied Bastarnae (who were Germanic afterall).
-
Wow. Wow indeed. :-*

:-* :o :-*
Stunning!

Lovely work :-* :-* :-*

Works of art Keith. Really sumptuous skin tones and shading.
Lovely to see you back on the brushes.
Hope life is treating you well on your island :)
-
Great painting in all respects, but especially the flesh tones
-
Impressive painting Keith, particularly like the skin tones. 8)

Some seriously good brushwork on two lovely figures. :-*
Did you paint 'em at random or with a specific goal in mind? Reason I'm asking, I would really love more Ancients goodness like that.

Plentiful colours, great shading, excellent detailing. That are gorgeous paintjobs!!! :o

Not entirely at random :). There will definitely be more Dark Ages (very much inspired by your Roman series on your blog btw).

Art meets wargaming, painting at its very best :-*

That's nice to know. In both instances. ;) Really, I'm flattered, mate.
So, looking forward to the next figures, angry or not.
-
Very angry and VERY nice! :-*
More please! Even angrier and more germanic if possible! ;)
-
Amazing painting.
And I love that Footsore mini too.
-
Very beautiful paintjob. The faces have so much character and in general the colour choices are excellent, and transitions very smooth. Some of the ebst Germanic Warriors I saw so far.
-
Super nice work :-*
Quick question: how many highlights do you typically use for the flesh tones?
-
Many thanks for all the nice comments guys - it's really motivating.
For the faces and skin I tend to use three colours. A flesh/brown, a middle flesh and white. I slap on the base colour, a base/middle flesh mix, middle flesh and finally middle flesh and white mix. So around four shades I guess.
One thing I do find helpful is to add a final highlight to the skin when I've finished the rest of the figure. There's usually one or two places where a well placed highlight makes all the differece. Good examples are ankles (on bare legs), wrists and one side of the forehead.
-
Thanks for the tips!
I think I've been using too many shades because I keep losing the contrast. I'll try this now because it looks really good.
Thanks again.

Superb paintjob !!!
