Title: Project Epic
Post by: Suber on 14 September 2015, 02:17:11 PM
I didn't get to play the original Space Marine back in the day, my first Epic stuff came with the second Edition in late nineties. However, it's been a shameful amount of time since I last played this, though at least I've been buying some stuff.
I think it's time I begin to give some love again to these 6mm tiny men ;)

If I'm beginning this thread, why not doing it with something special? Some time ago (when I use "some time" most probably it's measurable in years :D) I got this beauty, an Imperator Titan:

I got it at a reasonable price, you can see what happens with the spires and stuff. But that's no match to the magic of Oyumaru ;)

Far from Red Era, I'm trying blue here:

I'm also avoiding gold, I think all the ornaments are gonna be grey/white or black, still have to check what works better here.

This is it so far! I think I'll be able to show it finished in a few days! For the moment, here you have the blog post:

More coming soon!

nice rescue of that titan.

I have that and more to work up into a project of epic proportions, lots an' lots of projects, so little time.

Look forward to seeing more  :)

Looks good in blue! :-* Great job reconstructing those spires, too.

Nice to see more Epic on the board! :)

Your scheme reminds me of this one (http://www.axelfendersson.co.uk/blog/2015/04/amtl-revisited/), only inverted.

I have to admit though, if I'd received the Imperator Titan in that condition, I'd have been tempted to make either a Lucius pattern version or a Warmonger from it. :P

Thank you! Wow, those are nice, Major! I'd love to have a few Titans, but I don't think I can assemble a whole Legio like that!! :o

I finished the Imperator a few days ago. I kept it blue & white, nothing too flashy:

The slight touch of colour was added with letters. I thought that, being a walking cathedral with guns, i could use some inscriptions, the kind you may find on some big churches:

So that gave me the name for the beast, Miserere Nobis, "have mercy on us", I think it has the powerful war-torn ecclesiastic touch. This is the final result:

And here it is with some infantry:

You can find it all on the blog:

Nice job. Keep it well supported with Marines though. I came within a dice roll of taking one down with a warband of Work Nobz!

Thank you! I may gather my painted troops and see what do I still have to paint (which I believe is much more! :D). I have an Imperial Warlord Titan, but I most definitely have to strip it and begin all over again. I could use it for comparison purposes with this one ;)

Very nice, and very original details too - I don't think I've seen the towers painted as leaded windows or the scripture friezes on this Titan before. :)

I look forward to seeing your next Titan(s). If you want some alternative weapons, and don't want to pay the frankly stupid Ebay prices for Titan weapons, do have a search to see what cool ideas others have come with - I seem to remember a chap called Vaaish who had some lovely conversions, and that Carl Woodrow had some more on his blog.

Thank you! There are some inpsiring projects out there, absolutely sweet stuff. For the moment, here you have my (first) Warlord Titan ;)

It's the new model, the one released for Epic (the 3rd edition, late 90's). I had to strip it and start from the beginning:

I just followed the scheme I had previously used for the Imperator Titan (blue and some white), but trying to adapt it to the so different design:

After some mumblings I finally came to this result:

The stripes were something I came up with after some thoughts about how could I add some colour without painting random pieces in white. I believe they kinda fit in the general scheme of the Titan.
I've called this one Bellator Rex (Warrior King), being the functional head of the Legio in most of its actions, the Imperator being only summoned for the most desperate occasions.

Here you have the two (very) different Titans:

You can have a look at everything here at the blog:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/10/bellator-rex-warlord-titan.html?m=0

So this is the beginning of my Legio! (Still have to think of a proper name...) More stuff eventually to come!

Looks good - I always like the Lucius pattern Titans (and have a few myself!).

The stripes make it look surprisingly un-gothic though, and remind me more of an Anime-style mech. :P

If you have more Lucius Titans to make, and you want a bit of variety in shoulder weapons, I saw a great idea here (http://marcraleyminiatures.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/epic-scale-legio-gryphonicus-titans.html). Using the optics parts from 40k Space Marine predators and land raiders, he's made shoulder turrets for the cannons - I dare say you could use some spare plasma pistols/guns trimmed down of you wanted to add some plasma cannons to your Titans, or 40k Assault cannons for various rotary cannons, etc.

//Edit: thanks Vermis, link fixed! ;) //

Yum yum. :) Again, very neat, nice contrast of colours.

The 'new' model, though...!

Those look groovy. Great how the original turbolasers fit so well into the 40K bits.

I had my own ideas about converting all sorts of 40K weapons for lucius warlord hull and arm weapons, once upon a time.  The titan weapons being mostly in-universe upscaled versions of those weapons anyway, and the 40K weapons surprisingly well-sized for the titan minis IRL. I got as far as a page of scribbles, a bagful of bits, and one inferno cannon before the project ground to a halt - it was a bit labour intensive and I was less experienced in sculpting and scratchbuilding back then. See the stuff here:

http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/pic/Vermis/scifi/Epic/titans/weapons/

Not too likely to revisit it since I'll be switching to Troublemaker Games' walkers, unless I scratchbuild a 'truescale' lucius to match the bigger TMG minis. The upshot of that is that I have a spare inferno cannon... and maybe a lucius warlord... that might want a new home. ;)

Back again with more Titans. Here you have my latest additions, I got these two on eBay:

I stripped them and got them into blue and white, as the other Titans:

Nothing too complicated, as usual. I dared to do some stripes on the shoulderpads of one of them to give a visual sense of coherence with the Warlord. So here you have Venator Intrepidus (Fearless Hunter) and Tronitus Hastam (Thunderspear):

The familiy pic so far:

You can find it all over here:
http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/11/twin-titans.html?m=0

I'd like to have a couple of Warhounds, the Lucius pattern, but the escalation of prices is quite a madness right now, so I may wait a little or end up buying some proper old models, still to see...

Nice bit of work and additions.

Look forward to seeing which Warhounds you finally go for.

tempting me more and more to actually start some epic painting!

But it has to wait, no time for that as well!

Woof! Who choose the colour scheme on those old reavers? You really have done them justice.

I always had to laugh at the design of the Emperor titan. Churches on the legs! Can you imagine being a imperial chaplain giving a sermon in there?

Chaplain: "So we are here for holy communion to celebrate the life of the emperor ."

STOMP

Chaplain:"...oh shit! My communion wine has spilt!"

STOMP

Chaplain:" aaaggghhhh....I've just been crushed by my statue of the emperor! "

And so on......

Awesome looking stuff. I played my first game of epic a few weeks back and am looking forward to trying it again. Inspirational painting work here.

Post by: Suber on 03 November 2015, 10:07:54 AM
Thank you! :)

I can totally visualize what Andym says lol lol lol

Can't remember who brought my attention to that, but I saw a guy who was using a WH40K Knight as an Epic Imperator, 3Dprinting bastions and stuff to replace the top cathedral, and in fact it was cool, it strangely made much more sense (besides the fact of having a Titan up to scale with the 6mm infantry!)

Unfortunately I'm experiencing a... temporary discontinuation of service regarding Titans. I got a nice pack from eBay including four old plastic Warlords among other stuff (:-*), but the shipping company apparently messed things up and lost the package :-[. I've been claiming for the last weeks but it doesn't look good >:(
Anyway, I still have tons of old stuff at home, so there will be more Epic incoming soon! ;)

Was there any rationale behind the weapon fits? :-)

Not really, I just glued the stuff so it looked cool, but that's the way I approach to every project :D
Title: Re: Project Epic

When I arm them, I like to give Titans "roles" for a few reasons:

1) It justifies having a lot of Titans!

2) I find them more useful in-game, which helps with (1) too.

3) I find it easier to theme them, give them a backstory, and give them appropriate trophies and markings according to the varied foes they've fought.

The only Titans I found that were okay in a general-purpose role were Warlords because they have enough weapon hardpoints (plus weapons in the head - and even the tail!) to give them a bit of everything. Ironically (to me, anyway) Reavers were created to be the general-purpose class in the Legios rather than the the Warlords or the Warhounds! :P

Anyway, I hope your remaining Warlords turn up! Shame to hear they've gone missing. :(

Time to bring some infantry in! I have three armies: Space Marines, Orks and Chaos. Marines will need less work to be up to duty, so I'll be starting with them. In fact, most of my infantry will remain just as it is now. I have two Battle Companies from the Ultramarines, following the Codex Astartes (six Tactical Squads, two Assault Squads and two Devastator Squads). My original plan was assembling the whole Chapter, but you know, I scattered through too many things and in the end I only have these two.
Here you have the Second Company:

(If only I knew how to take decent pics you'd see the squad marks and numbers)

Third Company too:

Both of them:

I now need to repaint and base some Termies, Scouts and Librarians:

Her you have them at the blog:

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2015/12/ultraepic.html

I also need to repaint all the vehicles (a few Rhinos, Predators, a Thunderhawk...) Hope it can be anytime soon!

Title: Re: Project Epic
Post by: Suber on 10 December 2015, 08:05:06 PM
Well, I still have my Space Marines tanks half painted, that should be next... But for now, I finally managed to have a game :).  This was the only schedule I could get from my mate so I was forced to play with unfinished minis (sigh). But hey! It's a game!

My mate played Squats (gorgeous minis):

So it all started:

We used NetEpic. I'm not familiar with the rules, but my adversary is, so it was a kinda swift game. I hadn't played an Epic scale game since... 2000-2001? so it was a brand new game for me.

My pal, on the contrary, knew what he was doing. He just knocked me off with his artillery, while my poor infantry suffered it all over.

The game is quicker than I remembered/expected. By the end of turn one, we were on the edge of close combat, fighting for the board centre:

Squat army is not particularly fast. Except for the bikes. Oh, the bikes. They engaged my tanks in close combat and deprived me of using any long range weapon or most of my embarked troops.

We of course a few juicy Titan encounters

With lots of tables!

My units suffered and suffered...

By the end of turn 2 my army was under heavy pressure!

But I got some airborne reenforcements!

We finally got the long expected confrontation...

In the end it was terribly fun. I was appaled, as you can see, but I held the position for most of the game.

I enjoyed it a lot, and now I can only think of reorganizing my Marines army and painting my Orks!

You can have it all here (with many more pics!):

Wow, very nice-looking game, well done!  :-*

I have to admit, from my many games of SM2 and TL as a youngster, I did always find Marine infantry a bit underwhelming!  :?

I usually took a Scout company in three Thunderhawks, a Battle company, and a Devastator Company if I could find the points. The Scouts were basically just objective-grabbing troops with Tactical Marine stats, and the Devastor detachments were good enough at shooting to threaten Titans and hold areas fairly reliably. Some of their tanks however (especially the Vindicators and Land Raiders) were excellent! ...Maybe you need a Land Raider company? ;)

Any chance of seeing some more photos of the Squats? I (hopefully) have some on the way soon and this looks to be a very nicely painted force. Your marines are excellent too.

Really, Epic was a bit more realistic in that Space Marines were meant to work as allied forces with Imperial Guard and the Titan Legions rather than on their own. The same thing was true in Epic 40k as well.

Of course, most players (myself included) tended to play either IG + TL or SM + TL. You therefore saw Guard lists full of cheap bodies and mass artillery, and Marine lists full of Landraiders with some troops for holding objectives and buildings. Whilst the Guard lists tended to be good enough on their own, the Marine lists usually had more shortcomings.

If you're painting Epic to play either SM2, TL or E:A with, you should really build to the army list formations. If you're playing E40k, then the standard codex arrangement is fine (although you will want the assault troops in their own detachment).

Personally, I like all editions of the game, although SM2/TL has the most nostalgia for me being the first wargame that I played (and the only game I ever had everything painted for).

I'll most probably will get some Guard at some point (I have some vehicles, but will need a proper army, hehe).
For now, the correspondent vehicles, as promised ;)
I managed to finish them by the end of the year, but didn't have the chance to take decent pics!

So I got these Rhinos:

Land Raiders:

Whirlwinds:

Vindicators:

And the Thunderhawk:

Not a long story behind these, I've kept them with pretty basic details, but enough for tabletop distance ::)

http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com.es/2016/01/epic-new-year.html

Not my last post on Marines, I just got a new batch, so in a few days I hope they'll be on their way home (mwahaha...)
