For the Oldhammer Ireland day I plan on hosting a game of Saga with my own custom battleboards for Dwarfs and Skaven.
The scenario is essentially an escort duty mission where Joe Bugman and a band of his rangers attempt to escort a delivery of Bugman's finest to a dwarf mining outpost. Unbeknownst to Joe and the miners a contingent of Skavan led by Gnawdoom the grey seer and Throt the Unclean are attempting to intercept this delivery believing the barrels to contain a magical potion that gives Dwarfs long life and courage. The mining outpost will have an inn and a single gyrocopter landing pad, the road to the mine is dangerous, and populated with all manner of creatures that will happily eat bearded or whiskered players alike.
The project gives me the opportunity to paint lots of little fellows as well as a bugman's cart, some other baggage markers and build a model of a dwarf mine and inn, so plenty to keep me occupied.
So I thought I would post up my progress with the Skaven forces so far. In total there will be 8 seers/plague monks/magicians, a unit of eight clan rats, 4 storm vermin, 8 giant rats/handlers, a unit of 8 jezzail troops and Throt with his rat ogre bodyguard.
So far we have, Gnawdoom and his fellow magicians.

And the start of the skaven sniper team.

For the Dwarves there will be Joe and his rangers, the bugmans baggage train, a unit of miners, a unit of alcoholic berserkers, a gyrocopter and the slayer leader of the mining outpost. More pics to follow.

Gorgeous job on those classic skaven figures (of which I am quite fond). I look forward to seeing the burly opponents.

I absolutely love those original Skaven models, and that's the best I've ever seen them painted... fantastic job! :-*

Lovely paint work :-*

Beautiful painting! I really like that you've got a variety of color, but the tone remains unified. Skaven were/are my first WFB love. Looking forward to seeing more -- and the dwarfs.

what a fascinating project! Oldhammer + saga is a wonderful combo. Very nice fluff to, I'd really like to play such a game! It would be cool if share your house rules...
Lovely paintjob on those oldschool rats too! :-* I love those models. Hope to see more coming! And I'm eagerly awaiting for the bugman's cart and fellows dwarfves painted at that level! :-*
thanks for sharing!

Nice to see some of the old skaven I have com to love and fear in the old times of warhammer 3 and 4.
But: Don't some of them deserve some shields? ;)
The picture makes them scream "I feel naked without some piece of wood to duck behind - squeak!"
btw: Great painting!!!
Cheers

Amazing! I still think these are the best skaven models.
-
Gorgeous...are these OOP Citadel or do I see some Black Tree figures? I'm trying to find a company whose ratmen I can cope with.
-
Wonderful painting work, wonderful, of these old timers.
-
Thanks very much for the kind words guys.
They are all early citadel Skaven by Jes Goodwin, Elbows. Some C47 Chaos Ratmen and other early Skaven releases, I don't really like the later Skaven models. Only Jes got them 'right' in my mind.
Shields will be added after gloss/matt varnishing GS.
I have a few Dwarves done, some dwarves from the mine

Beautiful stuff, heaps of character in the faces of those short fellas.

I like a few of the newer ones, but generally agree with you. His original figures really set the character for Skaven, and I don't think any of the competition, nor even most of the later GW sculpts, quite compare.
Great work on the dwarfs as well!
-
Awesome, just awesome.
The colouring, great, "realistic moody" on both Dwarfs and Ratmen, grim faces on the Dwarfs, it just can't get any better in my book. :-*

Cool! I love the red noses! 8)

That's a FINE LOOKING collection of WONDERFUL old minis...BEAUTIFULLY painted. GREAT WORK!
Cool! I love the red noses! 8)
...the nose makes the Dwarf!

I love those skaven models too and they are wonderfully painted. Terrific. Your dwarfs are outstanding as well. Really love your painting style.

Thanks again for the kind words :)
I'm really enjoying this little project, glad to see others like it too.
...the nose makes the Dwarf!
I couldn't agree more :)
-
Yep, the noses are the top notch, all of your stunties are painted to top standard, I do very much like them!
Cheers

The dwarfs paintjobs are fantastic, every bit as good as the Skaven. I see so many minis here I used to own! I really need to track down anoth 'dwarf lords of legend' set...

Started work on custom Skaven dice tonight, after cursing at photoshop and my father in law's printer for a few hours I managed to get these designs printed out on water slide decal paper. I'll give the page a few coatings of acrylic spray varnish first then slap them onto the dice and seal them with some halford's lacquer. It all adds to the fluff, and Oldhammer is all about the fluff :)

Skaven themed saga dice, the 5 faces will be lacquered and then i'll place the horned rat icon on the final face.

Very nice. I have a bunch of those skaven. Definitely the best skaven era. Today's platic multis, blergh!
-
Great project, like the custom dice!
-
Great project.
The dice seem to have come out very well. I made some Saga dice using sticker sheets - but cutting out the individual stickers was hard work, and then getting the backing to peel off without making a mess of the sticker wasn't easy too.
Were the decals fairly easy to get on the dice? I imagine with the clear backing you could cut round them fairly approximately, which would speed things up.
-
Lovely paint work :-* I especially like the skaven. The dice are a nice touch.
-
When I see this, I feel 25 years younger. Great!
-
Had a little break from painting for a week or so, but did two more Bugman's command figures tonight to swell the dwarf's ranks, Bugman's troopers up next with any luck

Yip! Great additions! :-*

As much as I like the new, plastic clanrat sculpts, the classic ones have a certain magic, and were ahead of their time (but if I recall correctly, they were Jes Goodwin sculpts, and he is one of the best). It reminds me of looking at an old Citadel Miniatures catalogue over twenty years ago, marveling at all of the wonderful miniatures (especially the Skaven). Beautiful brushwork too.
