Title: Colour suggestions wanted for my cultists. More pics added 21/10-15
Post by: Knightofspades on September 18, 2015, 08:02:59 PM
Hello. This warband started as an idea for a Mordheim warband but as I have been tinkering with it Frostgrave came to my attention so I figured that they could pull double duty. But I am in doubt on what colour to use on them. I want to have different colours on their hoods and clothes to make the hoods stand out. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. Here are my conversions. Here are my archers. I think I made to many. Notice the difference on the thickness on the bows, what the difference a couple of years makes.

Some thugs, the guy on the far left is one of my favourite conversions in this warband.

These two guys are my least favourite conversions. They did not turn out the way I wanted but I am not sure if they are bad enough to deserve being torn apart and rebuilt.

And finally the wizard and the apprentice. I went for sword dagger combo on the apprentice per suggestion I got on this forum. I wonder if I should remove the skull from his leg to give the wizard a better sillouhete.
Coming up later is my two theifs and a marksman that I forgot to take pictures of today.

Purple and black for a more sinister look.  Perhaps white and yellow (maybe with red accents) if they view themselves as more holy.

You can never go wrong with purple for cultists.

Then it's just a matter of having a look at the colour wheel.
For the rank and file cultists, I'd suggest going for an adjacent colour, that will keep their overall look toned down. In this case, either red or blue (probably red would work better for evil guys, being the colour of blood).
And for making the wizards pop more, go for a mix of purple and its opposite, yellow (gold can be considered a variation of yellow, too). Those colours offer an eye-catching contrast while complementing very well.

Purple and black with a yellow spot colour. You're utilising the colour wheel and keeping it sombre at the same time.

I like purple and black but black is a bit difficult to paint unless its on smaller parts of the model for me at least. White and yellow with red acents is a good idea for them if they thought of them selves as more holy and I had a thought about the hooded models would make great zelots for witch hunters in Mordheim. But my guys are classic fantasy evil.

Thanks for posting the colour wheel. I hear another vote for purple, I agree that red are better for evil guys lol.

Another vote for purple and black. Keeping it sombre hmm..  Thank you all for your replies.
Here are the pic of my marksman and two thives. The guy on the far right is my favourite conversion in this batch.
Maybe I should change the title of this thread to warband wip or something like that?

Deciding on purple hoods really got me ready to paint these guys. I went for green clothes though.
First its the thief, he is my favourite conversion.

Luckily he survived my cat jumping up on the railing to check him out lol.

Here are the Bowmen and marksman.
So fun to paint these guys. Tried a different technique on the marksman but decided to keep it simple as possible.

Purple and green are classic villain colors.  If you look through the catalog of Marvel villains, you'll notice that purple and green are the two most popular colors for villains, and the combinations of the two is extremely common.  Green Goblin, The Beetle, Kang the Conqueror, Molecule Man, it's a very long list.  The only hero with that color scheme is The Hulk, who is supposed to be menacing.  The reason for it is that green and purple have a high contrast to each other, which helps make the villain recognizable even when drawn very small in a panel.

Basically what I'm saying is: excellent color choice!

I love the Purple/Blue-Green combo on these models. It is very "Marvel-esque".

That being said, where did the heads come from?

Ahhh those are amazing man! Loving the heads, and that colour scheme is strong as heck. What are the stats on the Cat wandering monster though? He must have a lot of wounds!...& agile!

Hmm, maybe they should team up with a Fin Fang Foom mini?

Thanks man, as I said the inspiration got me when the board suggested purple.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. Basically the giant cat is like Chutullu, you roll to see how many adventures and monsters it swats away each round it is basically invincible but can be bribed with food.  Move: 1000 Fight: 2000 Shoot: 0 Armour: 1000 Will: Unmeasurable Health: Invincible.

Ahh, I've got one of those Giant cat-thulu's, its like a random monster encounter you dont have to roll for.comes on at any table edge, reguardless if Im winning or not, plays to its own rule system. And I'm sure he has a cloak of invisibility coz I never notice his approach till he comes on from his decided board edge. But beware, his strength and speed are off the scale, and can take out massive terain as well as a total warband in 1 strike...lol

Forgot one bowman, put him in with my demon and construct.
The idea for making the construct is shamelessly stolen from Blacksmith's thread here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=80826.0
How do it walk you ask? Answer is: NOT VERY WELL!  Or magic. In anycase I thought too much about it cutting a cool silhouette rather than making it look like it could walk properly. Also I am not happy with with the paint job, I feel that the "face" is not distinct enough. Maybe I should use some washes or something?

I really like this guy, the flesh going from his mouth and straight down to his chest making him look like some ancient depiction of a leviathan beast creature. Would this demon count as a medium or great demon? Also I am thinking maybe brown pants is not the best colour choice, maybe I should go purple or green? Looking at the preview picture it looks like his teeth is not visible but they are in real life.

Here are the rest of the evil cult.
Two thugs, very happy about the thug on the right.
Some more thugs. The one with the hammer does not have a black spot on the front of his hood in real life, dont know what happened there..
The infantry man on the far right I hate! I hate that conversion and I hate his stupid walk!
The last kultist pic is of the apprentice (maybe a duelist?), templar and a fanatic "barbarian". I am pretty happy with how they turned out especially on the barbarians arms which is the best flesh I ever painted.
Finally the "wizard" (I might change that however) and a bonus possessed conversion I made back in around 1999 and just re based now.
