Romark, a simple set works best. Suggestions:-
1) Keep it simple, e.g. French can move OR fire
2) Players get limited ammo, e.g. D 10 rounds (represent with marbles & hand one in each time you shoot)
3) Put some vignettes on the table, e.g. some dead Russians left over from Boradino (Flintlouge undead Russians are ideal for this. Players can always spend a move looking for ammunition on the bodies.
4) Add some things to annoy the French player(s), e.g. a pack of ravenous wolves rushing out of that nearby wood OR poorly armed peasants from that hamlet.
5) pursuing cossacks (arriving on table after a delay)
6) A battery of Russian artillery trying to blow up the bridge before the French can cross (choose an aim point then throw some deviation dice.
7) sections of ice on the river, it might hold your weight or the artillery might hit the bit of ice you are on, or the next bit you wanted to cross onto.
8) French sappers (vignette) preparing to blow the bridge (say a 10% chance move one, 20% move two, etc.)

Interesting, I'm currently reading the Alain Lausard series, I think a campaign set around the retreat could be interesting, the objective is not to win but to make it through the gauntlet with as many men as possible.
-
That sounds similar to a club campaign of many years ago. It was based on the John Wayne film 'The Horse Soldiers' The regulars at the club were the U.S. Cavalry & carried their casualties from scenario to scenario. The club irregulars & visitors played the Confederates. The aim of the regulars was to achieve each scenario's objective, with the least possible loss & 'get on through to Baton Rouge' . The aim of the Irregulars was to make them pay heavily at each scenario, and if possible stop them. It was a short, but very enjoyable campaign.
I see similar for your Russian campaign:-
1) Through the woods
2) Across Boradino again
3) Past/through the village
4) save the supply wagons
5) Get across the bridge
and so on. I hope you have fun.

I have adapted the Muskets and Tomahawks ruleset for my 1812 - Retreat from Moscow game

Thanks. I think I'm adopting the officer in the greatcoat and bicorne as my desperate mojo mascot.

Great work, Perry figures are an inspiration. How do you get the snow effect on the cloaks etc ? I have tried various white paint efforts ,but nothing as crisp as this.
As to rules for skirmishes...Musket and Tomahawks for small groups of men or for a handful of figures try the Brian Ansell skirmish rules ..recently re adapted by Matakishi and beautifully presented on his Matakishi Tea House blog.
