Continuing my Big Rubble/Otherworld project I've started on the Uz. First up Trollkin, the lowest of trolls used primarily as fodder. Info and pics on the blog: http://www.posullivandesign.com/
-
They definitely look the part. Who makes the figures? Thank you for sharing!
-
Great to see these old miniatures get a new lease of life! Suitably Gloranthan colour schemes too: I note the bronze weapons.
(Arundel, these are from the old Citadel Runequest range. The trollkin also doubled up as night goblins - you can see them here (http://www.solegends.com/citc/c13nightgoblins.htm), along with the dark troll, who served as a red goblin champion. Several of the other larger Runequest trolls featured as ogres in Citadel's mainstream range of the time.)
-
Thank you, Hobgoblin! In some ways I prefer their look to that of the "official" trolls by Mad Knight, etc., though in the end both are great.

I know what you mean. When I was playing Runequest (my first fantasy game) as a nipper, I had no idea that the Uz were meant to have long muzzles and six nipples (or is it eight?). The descriptions in the RQ2 rulebook were notably sparse, and the few illustrations looked much more in line with Citadel's miniatures (http://www.solegends.com/citrq/citrqb3v1trolls/index.htm) than with those in Trollpak, etc.
Incidentally, the tusk rider in Citadel's troll set has been identified (http://realmofzhu.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/orcs-are-uz.html), fairly convincingly, as the reason for their orcish cavalry moving from wolves to boars.

Weirdly the Goblins used to ride the boars, the Orcs used to ride the wolves. Then they decided to swap - a much more logical arrangement to my mind, allowing the lightly armed, bow-wielding wolf riders to act as light cavalry and scouts, whilst the more heavily armed boar riders were able to act as shock cavalry.

I just been informed that these chaps, and the rest of the Trolls form the early citadel range predate the Trollpak supplement which set the current style of muzzled trolls. Originally trolls were much more goblin like. I do like the newer style but I did not pick up any of the Mad Knight stuff before he shut down. :-(

That's very interesting. Both were 1982, but the Citadel boxed set was June, so probably did come first (there are some reviews of Trollpak in October and November 1982). This French blog post (http://) traces the evolution of the Gloranthan troll; interestingly, there are some muzzled trollkin in the original 1978 rulebook, but Luise Perrin subsequently drew them as much more traditional folkloric trolls in 1979 - and those ones look very much like Citadel's miniatures.
-
Really interesting conversation! I have to admit in the 80s I had a much more goblin-esque picture of the trolls, derived from my second edition rule (with Perrin's illustrations), and was quite surprised when much later I saw the way trolls/trollkin were "supposed" to look. As I said above, I like both, but I might lean to my first picture given the option.
I didn't know Mad Knight had shut down. That's sad to hear! He had some nice things--I bought a lot of trolls/trollkin from him to flesh out my Runequest collection. Most were very nice sculpts (though I actually thought the Broos were the best of the lot).
-
The discussion wouldn't be complete without mention of one of the great "what ifs" of Gloranthan miniatures: John Blanche's concept sketch for Citadel dark trolls of the post-Trollpak variety (http://gothicpunk.tumblr.com/post/41418013118/some-of-blanches-concept-art-from-the-mid-1980s). It's in Heroes for Wargames.
As far as I know, these trolls went no further than the sketch stage, alas.
-
Thans for that, I'll have to dig out my copy - the Broo came out really well - those Trolls would have looked great
Arundel
He was looking for someone to takeover last year, but as far as I know no-one came forward and he had to close up.
-
More trolls for my Big Rubble game - this time Dark Trolls and their Cave Troll pet - more on the blog: http://www.posullivandesign.com
-
They look suitably menacing. I wouldn't want to stumble into their cave...
Just out of curiosity, where are you getting the figures? Trolling e-bay (snicker), part of your old collection?
Many thanks for sharing!
-
While the various Troll Fellows may not be state of the art pieces, they possess an abundance of character, AND are all BEAUTIFULLY painted & based. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
Cheers for the kind comments guys.
Arundel, it's a bit of both - some I've had for a while, others are more recent 'trolling'
And more trolls, still moving up the Uz social ladder - this tim Great Trolls and Mistress Race Trolls. Moe on the blog: http://www.posullivandesign.com
-
The Troll Fellows just keep getting COOLER with each new post. The two additions are just as SPLENDIDLY painted & based as their predecessors. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
Hi guys
Very nearly done with my Uz faction, this time a Zorak Zoran Death Lord, and Kyger Litor priestess. more pics on the blog. I'll get an actual game in soon! http://www.posullivandesign.com
cheers
-
I'm developing a real fondness for the minis, AND, of course, the BEAUTIFUL way they've been painted & based. GREAT WORK once more!
-
Excellent work! I'm quite jealous of those old trolls you have.
I hope you post pics of your games once you get around to them.
-
thanks again guys - these are fun to paint, that and preparing for an Otherworld game is really playing the nostalgia strings and 'dungeon bashing' my way through the mid eighties.
the last from the Troll box: the tusker and rider, which complete my troll gang - next up some very odd characters indeed - stay tuned :D
-
Nice job on the skintones, and some very characterful minis!
Pity those Blanch sketches never got further than the concept stage :(
-
perhaps the 2nd most iconic Gloranthan/Runequest beastie, the scorpion man. this one from the Citadel RuneQuest Beastmen box - the tail required a couple of pins to keep in place and the whole figure is fixed to the base by another pin hidden by foliage.
looks a little familiar - "you looking' at me?"

Nice runes! I actually have the Storm Bull rune from Hero Wars tattooed on me. My inner geek became outer... ::)
-
more from the beast men and humanoid adventurers box sets - this time Glorantha baboons and morokanth
more on the blog: http://www.posullivandesign.com
cheers

While not a RuneQuest mini, it does have some connection and I picked up my copy in a Citadel box set of RQ Adventurers. He does make a very cool beast man thief for my Otherworld/Big Rubble project

The Beasty Boys & Bunny Guy are UBERCOOL & BEAUTIFULLY painted...there seems to be a couple of Alf look alikes in the mix. GREAT WORK once more!
-
:D when I finished the Morokanth I was glad I painted it black, if I went with brown it would definitely resemble a particular annoying alien life form - cheers
-
Not much time for painting this month due to the festivities etc. but I did manage this little troop - enjoy and have a safe and prosperous new year!

Absolutely gorgeous painting.
Where are you getting the durulz from?
-
Yes, those are all OOP aren't they? Presumably they're all e-bay finds.
Merry Christmas!
-
LOVE the Ducks! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
-
cheers all
Yup Arundel is correct, these are old Citadel models, long since OOP. But you do see them once in a while on offer - I got very lucky a few months back and picked up a few extras to add to my old boxed sets
-
Love those ducks, and a fine job you've done on them!
-
Hi all
Got a game of Otherworld in over the holidays. Set in Glorantha it saw a group of adventurers, lead by a Yelmalio Sun Dome Templar delve into a Troll lair. With up and pics on the blog:

Psychoflexible, unfortunately he's long out of production: http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Runequest_-_Collectors_Guide#Runequest_Box_4c:_The_Broo (http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Runequest_-_Collectors_Guide#Runequest_Box_4c:_The_Broo)
-
The unicorn guy is Ralzakark, Prince of Dorastor.
Check in with Mad Knight Castings (https://www.facebook.com/Glorantha.Wargames/) and see if he makes any. He's mostly closed up shop but I've bought a few uz from him and I'm just waiting for them to arrive.
-
the last of the broo raiding party...

By the way, how are you planning on adjusting Otherworld rules to suit Glorantha?
-
Nice. I like that guy on the left.
-
cheers guys

Not a huge amount really, I like the way it plays and its based on 7th Voyage which is also mythic bronze age. So far the only concessions are to ignore the hero/villain and just make up the casts to suit the models and their rune cult, and create a Chaos ability.
-
Regarding the Mad Knight stuff: If you send him a message on Facebook he'll probably sell you them. I bought a full set of trolls and trollkin and they look absolutely excellent and fit the part.
You'll definitely do a much better job of painting them than I eventually will. lol

I was going to do sorcerers and fiends as being unable to be taken by anyone not Chaos-aligned but other than that I wasn't going to change much either. I have some ideas on what changes could be made, though.

An infamous pair of Pavis residents, those familiar with White Dwarf in the eighties my well remember this duo...

Nice. You really captured them well there. The (almost) Complete Griselda (which is missing that one post-retirement story, which can be found online) remains my favorite collection of Gloranthan fiction.
-
a few more adventurers and the original RQ cover girl (US edition)...
cheers
