Hi all!
New member here, but long time lurker....thought it was about time I joined. ;)
Due to the fact that I'm constantly inspired by the wonderful work on this forum, I thought I'd share my own humble offerings, in the hope that it'll possibly inspire others! Since last year, I've been working on an ECW variant for 'Donnybrook', building up New Model Army and Covenanter factions. An informal group of us managed to put on a game at the recent Partizan show in September, and over the next few months, I'll bring the project to some kind of conclusion, maybe...... ::) The intention is to put on a larger version next May at the next Partizan show!
Anyway, here's a taster of what can be found on my blog:

Slightly sporadic in my posts, but hopefully more inspiration on here will spur me on.
Hope everybody enjoys looking, and best wishes,
Andy

Hi Andy,
Welcome aboard the good ship LAF. I to am a big fan of Donnybrook and I've been using them for Darkest Africa and the Sikh Wars.
Cracking blog btw, had a quick skim read and saved it to my favourites. How did you make those cards? I could do with some of them.
Will be looking out for your posts to see how your Donnybrook venture gets on.
Jeff
-
My friend Dave joined you for that game you put on at Partizan. We came and rescued you from him after his shenanigans had won him the game (I think). He loved it and the rules/game looked excellent I have to say! :D
-
Hi all!
Thanks for the kind comments so far, both here and on the blog. Glad you're liking what you're seeing!
Jeff- the cards.... well! ::) To answer your question, they were made by yours truly. I found a font (can't remember which one now, but I'll look it up) that looked suitably old-fashioned, and a background texture from the internet. I'm not the most technological of people, but I managed to create a border and word processed the backs and fronts of the cards. Then I printed them out. Stage 1! Stage 2 saw me using a guillotine and glue - remembering to glue the backs on in a consistent direction ;) - then more guillotine work to trim off any white bits of paper left over. Stage 3 saw them bunged in a laminator, then run through twice just to make sure they were sealed properly. Cut them out, and Bob's your uncle! It took a while start to finish, but they look great, and have so far served us well! I like the idea of doing different 'style' packs for different Donnybrook 'eras', maybe in the future. There's more views of them here:
http://haveacare.blogspot.co.uk/2014_02_01_archive.html?m=1#2549059821868098720
if you didn't spot them earlier! Hope that helps.
Gibby, hi! Yes, I remember Dave! Glad he had a good time- he'll get a mention in a future blog post about Partizan, all in a positive manner of course! He definitely had the luck of the cards, and my friend Andy (Andy Fox from Nantwich and Crewe Wargames) was very bemused! Dave's faction definitely had their mettle up that day! Thank him for us, and thank you for your kind words!
Best wishes to all,
Andy
-
Excellent. Using Donnybrook would be brilliant for a Killing Times period game.
-
Thanks for the info Andy :)
-
Hi all
Thanks you for the warm welcome to the LAF - I think that's one of the things that sets this forum apart from others - and all the compliments and views. Wow, is all I can say - very humbling and heart-warming at the same time! :)
As promised, I've updated my blog, with pictures of the completed infantry for my New Model Army Faction, and some details about the faction composition in the context of my 'Donnybrook ECW' project.
http://haveacare.blogspot.co.uk/
Hope you enjoy the pics - a taste of which below.
Next up will come the horse for the NMA, then I'll move onto the Scots and bits of scenery.
Best wishes

Great work on everything so far, looking forward to seeing more.

Hi all!
Thanks for all the continuing kind words. 8)
Next instalment of the project - this time, it's the NMA horse!

This brings to a close my Donnybrook NMA basic 4 point faction, so the next few posts will be about scenery for the project and some 'scenic' fluff (including chickens :o ....), as well as pics of the completed NMA faction and some historic background to the forces and the Dunbar campaign. I'll then move onto the Scots Covenanter faction. See you soon, and follow the horse to the blog!...

Excellent work!! ;)

Have you tried Witchfinder General for this kind of game? Leave out the supernatural and you have a cracking set of C17th skirmish/small action rules.
-
Hello and welcome to the LAF. Some great looking Perry miniatures Ecw you have there.
-
Wow....cracking stuff!
-
Hi all - been a few days, and I've been busy painting, but time for another update. ;)
Thanks for all the feedback, and to answer a few questions:
charla51 - Hi! Witchfinder General.... no, not tried it yet, although I've heard good things about it. It is on the radar, but we've found Donnybrook to give a good game and it's easy to pick up. I am interested in trying out different rule sets, though, and might give it a go. 'Pikeman's Lament' will also be on the radar when it comes out (Michael!... :)), and I've also dug out my old copy of 'File Leader!' Witchfinder General is also on the list!
Westwaller and Roo - Hello, and thank you for the welcome. They are mostly Perry's, and the project will have a few Foundry Perry-sculpted figures thrown in - shaken casualty markers, and some civilians (when I get round to them). I like the figures they have produced for both ranges, and still rate them as some of the best ECW figures out there. Somewhere, I've got a load of Renegade minis waiting for paint.... but they're for a different project!
Archiduque - praise indeed sir, from yourself, so thank you! Keep watching this thread, and I hope you approve! :D
The latest post on the blog shows off the final pics of the 4 point Donnybrook NMA faction, in completeness, and I offer a few thoughts on the historical basis and background for the figures and my force composition. There's also a teaser of the buildings I've painted, and the arrival of the Scots, as well as the livestock for the table... don't worry, the chickens are still there ;), but this week has mainly been about sheep... lol

BTW, Does anyone know how to set up a gallery on here? - I've taken quite a few pictures and would love to show them to people, but I'm unsure how to go about it. Would I have to send them to another online gallery first, then link them back to here? Any advice gratefully accepted.

Very nice Scots - you've captured the "Covenanter" look well.

That is some fantastic painting. Keep them coming.

Very nice looking terrain and sharp painting. Looks like a great project.
I keep hearing good things about Donnybrook. Really must give it a try.

To run a gallery here on LAF you need to be a supporting member. Professor Witchheimer, the forum owner, has not been taking 'supporting member' donations for a while now, but if you send him a private message (PM) he may be willing and able to sort something out for you. (Supporting member donations can be any amount, great or small - it's the thought that counts :))

I read the rules, very near to Triumph&Tragedy and Saga. Card activation, fixed numbers for troops (4 Elite, 8 normal and 12 poor, I think). Very simple, but complex in the actions and moves.
-
Excellent project and nice brushwork! :-*
I like the small mini count necessary to play.

I think it resembles Sharp Practice quite a bit too. Maybe its a mash of all the best bits. lol

Great little project :)

Hi all - It's been a few days, but just a heads up on the latest post on the blog, this time about the animals and livestock that are featuring in this project. It's not a long post, but suggests ideas and thinking behind my choices for what creatures I've chosen to include... :)
http://haveacare.blogspot.co.uk/2015_11_01_archive.html#2780621208472569458
Hello to Sparrow and Hu Rhu, Furt and Jimbibbly - thanks for all the compliments re the painting, and glad you like them! I have to say that much of the ideas for colour schemes and so forth, for my Covenanters were taken directly from this fantastic blog, Project Auldearn 1645 http://auldearn1645.blogspot.co.uk/2008/01/painting-covenanters.html (http://auldearn1645.blogspot.co.uk/2008/01/painting-covenanters.html). It gives a great range of colours to start from, and I've added my own twists and ideas. I'll add more when I begin my posts about the Covenanter faction. For anyone thinking about painting up ECW era Scots, especially for the campaigns of Montrose, then I heartily recommend this project, and it's great to see that it's still going after all this time. Definitely inspirational. 8)
Captain Blood - Richard, many thanks for the welcome, and kind words. I'll have a think about the gallery, and see if just posting pics on the forums works - I think it's a case of so far, so good. I'll contact Professor Witcheimer re: a supporting member donation, so thanks for the info. :)
A quick taster of what's on the blog:

Next up will be the buildings, and then the Scots.
See you soon, and best wishes

Only just noticed this thread. Excellent stuff. Keep it coming :-*
-
Those chooks! You must be a bit mental :)
Lovely work on the animals.
-
Love the chickens :)
-
Hi all - as promised, some buildings! ;)
Malamute - thanks for the nice words - I'll do my best to keep going! Inspiration from other people on here is certainly a good motivator, so thank you!
Folnjir and Captain Blood - yeah......the chickens..... o_o
They are a bit bonkers, aren't they?! Glad you like them. They seemed to take ages, but worth it I think. Not sure if I'll do any more in such a style, but I like 'em. I think any more will be a much simpler 'type'; I'm just waiting to do a scenario when they decide to attack someone - it'll bring a whole new meaning to 'Charge of the Scots Greys'!... :D

A few thoughts and pics about the buildings that are featuring in my Donnybrook ECW project, with ideas about painting etc. Next up will be the last posts about shelter on my table top - tents - and other bits of fluff, then onto the Scots, and their hero, Tam!
Until next time, best wishes,
Andy

Hi all
Apologies for the absence - real life and a general painting and modelling 'funk' had taken hold, but I'm back again, and with an update on the blog. ;)
This time it's a short post about tents, general camp 'stowage' and a teaser of the Leader for my forthcoming Scots Faction. Not sure what I'll do when these posts catch up with 'real' time, but until that time, enjoy! :D
http://haveacare.blogspot.co.uk/2015_11_01_archive.html#5358788122946741899
I'll be back again soon, with a fuller account of Tam Mcleod's Hodden Hordes, but until then, some pics follow to wet the appetite. Enjoy the run-up to the festive season, and keep painting!
Regards as always,
Andy

I especially like the crofts :-*

Excellent painting. Love the vignette of the firing squad.
Same. A great thread of little treats. Will see if I can hunt down some of those Hudson and Allen Studio buildings.
-
Nice painting there, I've had your blog saved to my iPad for a while now as I'm a big fan of Donnybrook. Keep it up.
-
Brilliant work, I love all the extra bits and pieces you have done that really give the project alot of character. Just curious, where did you get the oval bases for the cavalry?
-
Hi all
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like what you're seeing, and hopefully over the holiday period I'll get some more pics in of the table or some game shots! ;)
I guess all the little bits are inspired by what I've seen over the years at different shows and in various rules or on other people's blogs. I love that whole feeling of 'small world' realism (up to a point!), so recreating it on the wargames table seems right to me, like it does for many of us! Can you tell that I loved Lego as a kid! :)
Firescale -
http://war-bases.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=18_61&product_id=95
should get you to the right place! If not, they're pill bases 25mm by 50mm from Warbases. The 2mm thick ones. A very nice simple product (as I've found all the Warbases stuff to be -not affiliated to them btw, just v impressed), and I think they work for skirmish wargaming. Rank and file infantry are on 25mm rounds, and my heroes are on 30mm hex ones, so they stand out. Other 'lesser' characters will be on 25mm hexes.
Hope that makes sense! Captain Blood- cheers for liking Tam McLeod. He'll have his own post soon!
See you again in the next few days.
Regards,
Andy

Hi all - apologies for the absence - It's been a bit of a busy Christmas and New year! :-I
Anyhow, I'm back again, and this time, it's the turn of the Scots! 8) I'm turning to the Covenanter Faction of my ECW Donnybrook, and it's time to introduce Major Tam McLeod, as the Leader of my Scottish faction.
He's already appeared here in photographic form, but the blog post goes into more detail about his creation.

Next up will be the dragoons - here's a teaser.... ;)

Hello again!
Well, a week on, it's time for the Scots dragoons in full. :)

My latest post details the Covenanter dragoons for the project, with a few thoughts and background on the composition and creation of the unit, and Scottish dragoons in general.
Hope you enjoy it - next up will be my Covenanter 'Shaken' casualty markers.
Best wishes, and once again, thanks for the kind feedback and visits to the blog!
See you soon,

Excellent painting on all the figures.

Hi all
Just to let you know that the project hasn't gone to the wall - far from it in fact! There'll be some updates over the weekend, on the blog and on here, of stuff I've painted up over the last couple of months. I've been busy painting stuff in preparation for our game at Partizan in 5 weeks time! ;)
(5 weeks?!!! :o Best get back to it then!)
Best wishes, and see you soon. Thanks for the continued support.
Andy

Hello!
As per the previous post - a quick update. ;)
I've been busy painting stuff in preparation for the Partizan Show, on 22nd May 2016, at the new venue of the Newark Showground. It's only five weeks away, so updates will still be rare as I'm using the evenings for painting, but I just wanted to share with people some of the recent work from the last few months. The RAW Gamers are putting on a larger version of 'Somewhere in Scotland, 1650', which we debuted last September at the 'The Other Partizan', with larger factions and characters, so it's all systems go to get these done. Usual story of lots of time slowly disappearing... o_o
So, just as a teaser from the blog:
http://haveacare.blogspot.co.uk/2016_04_01_archive.html#288778447970821444

The completed Scots pike - with added plaid....
The first completed Scots shot unit

and alarmed civilians!
and other bits and bobs - mostly scenic items to enhance the table (including cabbages) are also shown.
I'm going to go into more detail about the units and scenery in subsequent posts after the show, but until then, I'll keep painting. Not sure where the RAW Gamers will be in terms of floorplans, but feel free to pop by and say hello if you're there. I'll post just before the show, but until the next time, thanks for looking, and thanks for the continued support! see you soon, both on here, and at Newark!
Best wishes

Fantastic thread! Very inspiring stuff. Great painting!
Agreed, really enjoying seeing this develop. ;D
-
My current favorite project on LAF, and that is saying something! ;)
I am absolutely stealing all your ideas for my own Border Reivers project. I may even start dressing like you and hanging out creepily in all the places you frequent. ;D ::)
-
Beautiful painting! Love it!
-
Hi all
Just a quick one - figures won't paint themselves sadly... ::)
Firstly, Mikeland, Malamute, LeadAsbestos and Dijit thanks for all the kind comments, as well as to everyone else who's dropped by recently. It's keeping me going!
LeadAsbestos, I'll keep an eye on your Reiver's project and I'm glad you like the ideas and colour schemes!(I do hang out in some strange places though, if you still wanted to do that... ;))
This week has seen the completion of the first half of the final Scots shot unit, as well as the introduction of my first NMA character - may I introduce Master Thomas Playwell!
http://haveacare.blogspot.co.uk/
Hope you like them - the usual teaser.

Hi all - it's been a while!
Well the project isn't dead - far from it, but ticking along steadily. A slow June has been followed by a quietly productive July - more news on the blog:

The RAWGamers will be at The Other Partizan Show on August 21st, where these chaps will get their final run out, before projects anew! Pop along and say hi - and have a throw of the dice - we're running these chaps in a participation game!
Until then, many thanks for looking, and see you soon with more updates - the New Model Army are nearly completed as well, and then just some civilians..... and then we'll see where we go from there.
Cheers, and thank you for the continued feedback, kind words and thoughts
Best wishes
Andy

Those photos are works of art! Beautiful... :o
I picked up Donnybrook at Historicon earlier this summer. Not sure when I'll get a chance to test it out with all the irons in the fire, but a lovely looking rulebook. Thanks for sharing the inspiring photos...!

After reading the ECW Donnybrook Project - 'Somewhere in Scotland, 1650...' discussion on LAF, as well as your blog on the details of your idea. Thank you for sharing your project, and have you completed it since then?
