What ho chums,
It was a hard fight, but I finally succumbed to the lure of Frostgrave!
Seeing as I didn't have any fantasy figures in my collection, I've had to start from scratch.
Here's my first bunch of minions, some thugs...
...and a couple of archers...

...and a couple of men-at-arms.
I hope you like them!
-
Those are some nice minis. What kind of wizard will you be adding?
-
Thanks!
The varnish is drying on their Summoner employer as I type :D
-
They look great. I like the muted tones.
Unfortunately, I recognise every bit of plastic you've used and it's just reminding me of all the unpainted crusade stuff I've got in my plastic pile.
-
lol
Well then pull your finger out and get painting! ;)
Yeah, I've seen quite a few warbands made from Fireforge plastics. There was me thinking I was being original!
-
They look great. thanks for sharing
-
Very cool. There I go again making cold weather comments...
-
Cheers!
-
Nice looking warband. I got a box of those mongols too. They sure look to have a lot of uses.
-
They certainly do!

Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce my wizard, Thaddeus Daemoncall, and his apprentice Johannes Oddleigh...
Thaddeus Daemoncall was once the Dean of Extra-Planar Studies at the prestigious Ulfenhalle College of Magick. Here he cemented his reputation by building the Great Hall of Summoning – a vast auditorium where advanced students could practice the arts of demonology on a scale never before considered.
His career at it’s peak, there was only one goal left for Thaddeus to achieve – the chancellorship of the College. However he was beaten to the post by the establishment's leading Sigilist – Thaddeus’ rival for many years and a member of his opposing magical school to boot.
The new Chancellor soon began to put his stamp on the college – diverting funding from the Department of Extra-Planar Studies and lowering the intake of apprentice summoners in favour of his own Department of Supernatural Etymology.
The final straw came when the new Chancellor announced that the Great Hall of Summoning was ‘not financially viable’ and would be closed; the building to be used as an annexe to the Great Sriptorium. Thaddeus’ increasingly angry appeals fell on deaf ears and so, enraged beyond all good sense, he decided to teach the new upstart a lesson.
Luckily, he had designed his great hall to have the requisite summoning circle inlaid in the stone floor, rather than drawn on with chalk. The new Chancellor had simply had this floor carpeted over, so it was the work of a moment to, one dark and silent night, magically burn off this overlay and reveal the circle once more. Soon the College would witness the greatest feat of summoning ever attempted!
Alas one of the points of the pentagram had worked loose when the new bookshelves were dragged into position, and the circle was not secure…
As the College burned around him, Thaddeus was forced to run; his academic reputation, and indeed his life, in tatters. With his faithful apprentice Johannes Oddleigh carrying what tomes and artefacts he could grab, he escaped the pandemonium and fled to the outer reaches of the Old Empire – far from the reach of the magical authorities.
Here, in a ruined fort that once marked the boundary between the Empire and the savage steppes beyond, he carved out a new existence, trying futilely to re-master the arts that he had lost during that chaotic flight. His memory growing dim and his skills growing blunter with time, he scraped a living by casting minor spells and performing magic tricks for the nomadic tribes, raiders and caravans that occasionally came his way – until one day he heard tell that the ancient Frostgrave, cradle of all magical power, had begun to thaw…
-
Very cool.
Great little back-story, too.
-
Thanks monkeylite!
A few more figures hot off the press - L-R Ranger, Treasure Hunter, Apothecary, Thief.

Thanks guys, I hope it lives up to your expectations! :D

I love the look of your henchmen. You have got a cracking collection going on there. Where are the constructs from?
-
Cheers mate!
The big guy in the middle is a plastic WOTC D&D prepaint (tarted up a bit by me), whilst the other two are prepainted plastic Dreamblade figures (similarly tarted up)

I might add that they look better in real life then they do in the photos!

Two more chaps ready to plunge into the frozen city...

Elf tracker.
-
Impressive collection and nicely painted. Thanks for sharing
-
Thanks! :D
It's nice to paint some fantasy figures for a change (something I haven't done for twenty-odd years).
-
The last lot of figures before my first game on Friday!
A marksman (centre), two crossbowmen and a pair of infantrymen.
-
Really nice! I love those kits. My favourite is the guy at back right with the spear - really characterful.
-
Thanks!
I'm pretty pleased with how he came out too :)
-

Now I've painted some figures, it's time for some treasure for them to search for!
Presenting the lovely treasure chest set from Ristul's Market, courtesy of Annie, AKA the Dice Bag Lady.
-
One last photo before my first game tomorrow - some statues...
-
Nice additions. Good idea hacking chunks of 'statue' off to give that ruined aspect to them. Now rethinking using old metal figures for mine - would be much easier to 'ruin' plastics. Thanks for sharing
-
Thanks, hopefully they haven't been ruined too much by the quick paintwork!
-
Great job on the treasure chests.
Might have to get me some of those.
-
Cheers Harry!
-
Nice work, jp - atmospheric. I've recently found that some "gift-shop" figures that my wife saw in a charity shop and bought on the off-chance I could use them make quite good statues. They are in stilted poses and different enough from wargames figures to look like statues. I mounted most of them on stacked plastic bases of decreasing sizes and they don't look too bad.
Unfortunately, most of them are no good for fantasy... :(
Doug
-
Cheers Doug!
I've also heard tell if cheap chess pieces being used too.
-
I've purchased some Loka Chess sets for a bargain (6 euros for 18 pieces)
-
They'll make great statues, and possibly even wandering monsters etc.
-
Played my first two games of Frostgrave last week, and have got around to writing up the first one - a 'standard' game.
You can read the narrative at My first game - we had a blast!
Here's a link to my batrep - http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/thaddeus-first-foray-into-frostgrave.html but here are some photos...

Looks great and loved the narrative flavour of the bat rep. Great stuff.
-
Thanks!
-
I enjoyed these reports. I hope you'll do more!
-
Cheers Rufus!
Probably won't get a game in until after Christmas, but rest assured it'll get a write-up!
-
Hi folks,
I've been asked to record my initial impression of Frostgrave, now that I've a grant total of two games under my belt.
The resultant waffling can be read here - http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/first-frost-thoughts.html
-
just read your report, got me excited about my first game tommorow, thanks :)
-
Thanks skip - nice to know I've achieved something positive today!
-
So I thought I'd have a crack at writing a scenario, inspired by a bit of recycling.
Dare you break open... The Cell...?
http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/the-cell-scenario.html
-
Nice work - that kind of container is typical of the kind of detritus I look at and think "hmm, must be a gaming use for that" and then discover 20 years later, unused and ripe for chucking out. So, kudos for coming up with a use for yours right away. And it works very well in Frostgrave. And a cracking scenario. Consider it stolen....(and also a good excuse for indulging in a sugary, ready-made dessert - a result in so many ways).
Doug
-
Excellent use of the container and a cracking scenario as well!

Thanks to Mason for sending me a sprue of Mantic Revenants, enabling me to knock up some Frostgrave skeletons.

Some corpse markers for the Hunt for the Golem mini campaign...
Read all about it at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/blood-bones-and-body-bits.html if you dare...
-
That... Is... AWESOME!!
I am hoping to get the campaign soon. Can you elaborate a little on what these markers represent amd how much you need? That way I can make a headstart.
-
I like those corpse markers and the revenants. Nice PJ's. The corpses initially made me think of melted people. lol
-
Thanks guys!
That... Is... AWESOME!!
I am hoping to get the campaign soon. Can you elaborate a little on what these markers represent amd how much you need? That way I can make a headstart.
You need ten. You put them on the table instead of treasure counters in the first scenario. You spend an action searching each corpse for loot, or something else... :)
-
10 gruesome counters. I am looking forward to creating them. Now all I need to consider is whether to make them snowy or not, whether I want to use them for FG only or also for MH.
-
Yeah... I'm not sure if the snow works on my markers or not, but I wanted something to break up all the gore I'd splattered on!
-
Love these counters. I've just set up the Hunt for Golem campign at my games club in Feb and i'm inspired to replicate (poorly) your success.
-
Nice
treasure casualty markers. Appropriately gory. Good way to use extra bits from plastic kits. Thanks for sharing
-
Those are sickeningly well done.
-
Nice to see that you made such good use of those dead fellas.
Those markers look great too, just the right mix of gore and snow.
Brilliant!
:-* :-*
-
Cheers folks - glad you like 'em!
-
yuck! Gross! :P
-
I'll take that as a compliment Rob! :D
-
Gruesomely well done! What material did you use for the snow? It appears to have a translucent quality that I like. :D
-
Thanks!
The snow is blobs of Vallejo matt varnish, sprinkled with a fine white flock I got off eBay.
-
JP
Some classic stuff here matey... :o
-
Cheers mate - just waiting for you to knock a warband together for next time you're down in the 'ford :D
-
Some corpse markers for the Hunt for the Golem mini campaign...

Wonderfully gruesome! (http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i200/10011970/headsquish.gif)
-
Thanks!
-
JP
With 'Dragon Rampant' inbound I am sure they may be a few stragglers from the hordes of old WHFB I will use for that project that could be drafted in... :?
-
It's hard to believe these disgustingly gruesome items were produced by a nice, polite Herefordian gent like yourself.
Congratulations.... lol
Doug
ps: played my first FG game last night.....
-
lol Well they do say to watch out for the quiet ones...!
Hope you enjoyed your first venture into Frostgrave mate - will there be an AAR?
-
Hope you enjoyed your first venture into Frostgrave mate - will there be an AAR?
Yes it was good fun. A four-hander. My Wizard was killed on the last move by a lowly cross-bowman which was unfortunate but it was just a trial game so no bones broken.
No AAR - I didn't take any photos (2 of the warbands were <shudder> unpainted) so the camera stayed in its case. Anyway, I was too busy trying to work out what the hell to do to remember any kind of coherent narrative. :D One thing though, I must download the errata...!
Doug
-
Fair enough!
Luckily there's a good chance that your wizard would have survived the injury post-game anyway.
-
An early Christmas present for those who must face a higher level wizard this festive season - beware the Vampire Field...
http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2015/12/the-vampire-field-scenario.html
-
I'll have to steal the blood and guts treasure idea, as I want to make a somewhat gothic horror Frostgrave table for my
Cleric Thaumaturge to play on.
-
Help yourself :D

A couple of spooky chaps to haunt the ruins...

-
Can't go wrong with the pegasus kit...I have bought six boxes worth for my city
Sure you have seen them on the shed wars thread
-
Oh yes - I never miss an instalment of Shed Wars! :D
Alas my budget only goes to one box...
-
I did have to sell a lot of other stuff to raise the cash :D
-
An eerie, fell mist swirled around the feet of the warband as their master led them through the gates of the necropolis; ghostly tendrils curling around their legs like the tentacles of some long-dead phantom creature.
Thaddeus squinted at the faded parchment clutched in his hand.
“If this if correct, then the spell I seek lies buried in that mausoleum yonder…”
Last Friday saw Thaddeus Daemoncall and co. attempt some grave robbing in The Mausoleum...

Another great game of Frostgrave! Giles initially held the upper hand, with his archers far outmatching my own and his spellcasting going flawlessly while I had to empower most spells. The first two skeletons were easily removed, but once they began to appear in greater numbers, all plans had to be put on hold while they were dealt with. When I eventually managed to batter Giles’ warband out of the ring, the skeletons were still growing in number, and it wouldn't have been feasible for what was left of my warband to claim the final treasure.
It was also a very bloody game, with a significant proportion of both warbands going down. I had one thug die, and another two wounded, but luckily gained enough gold to replace and upgrade them. Thaddeus, skulking under cover at the back as usual, emerged without a scratch, but his bone dart wounded Toddlebrew, who had to spend gold on treatment.
-
A captain for my warband possibly? Introducing Red Sanrda - aka the Scarlet Wolf.
She's a Reaper Bones miniature painted (poorly) in anticipation of the Sellsword supplement.

@jp1885 ... where is your mausoleum from? It looks really good. I can recognise a few GW bits, are the other Pegasus?
-
Thanks!
Most of the terrain is my mate's Mordhiem stuff, and the mausoleum is part of his GW Garden of Morr set. Two of the corner ruins are indeed Pegasus.
-
very nice!
Will have to pick up that dreamforge model of the bellheaded construct! i love the idea of a magic construct wandering around, occasionally hammering himself in the head! not sure he'll fit into my mordgrave/graveheim undead city feel im going for...
-
The walking bell of doooooom maybe? :D
-
A while back I designed some teleportation disks for use in the Keep scenario.
Well David at Iron Mammoth Design has very kindly brought them to life!

There are six in the set, but you only need four for the scenario.
-
Those are lovely. Are they available for sale? If so, then do you have a link?
Thanks!
-
Yep £8 plus p&p for the set. The only link I have is the Frostgrave facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Frostgrave/

That's a shame. I'd love a set of these but without some publicly available details I guess I'm going to have to pass.
-
Likewise. I don't do Facebook, and as there is nothing on their website so even though I'd love a set of these I'll have to pass.

No biggie guys - there's a link to Iron Mammoth's website on my blog; gotta be some contact details on there :)

Just a quickie - some small petrified trees from Printable
Terrain Scenery (no, I didn't print them myself, but bought them unpainted second hand)
-
Do you mean Printable Scenery? (http://www.printablescenery.com)
I give it another year or so and we'll all be buying downloads for 3D printable terrain. I'm just waiting for the first 3D "corner store" to open where you take in your download on a memory stick, have a coffee and leave with your miniature/terrain piece etc.
-
Ah yes, Printable Scenery - will change the OP :D Thanks!
-
Ohhh I do like those.
-
I've seen a couple of kickstarters where they are selling plans for 3D printing. JP, I really enjoy your batreps and blog.
-
Thanks guys!

Introducing Friedrich von Unaussprechlichen and his cultists...
I decided not to go with the standard pointy hood chic, and went for a painted skull-face look instead.
More stuff on http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/02/von-unaussprechlichens-kulten.html
-
I like those a lot! The face-paint is a great idea.
-
Cheers!
-
They look really good!
That skull mask idea and your figure choices work really well together.
:-* :-*
(Some quality old classics in there too.... 8))

Thanks mate :D

Some cheap and easy terrain...
Stone walls and scatter made from bits of polystyrene.

JP do you just prime the polystyrene and then paint and it stays together ok? I've never used it but it seems to be crumbly to me if that makes sense? Really enjoy your posts and blog
-
Thanks!
You're right, it does get crumbly. I countered this by running a heat gun over the bits, especially the breaks and such, to melt and harden the crumbly bits and 'weld' them into place.
I primed them with black paint by the way, rather than spray primer, as I thought this might melt the polystyrene.
-
ah great idea on both parts. I'm going to have to give this a try
-
Just make sure you do it somewhere well ventilated, and go easy on the heat at first :)
-
Loving yor work on Frostgrave, jp. Maybe you change the next Hereford Big Game to a Frostgrave extravaganza... :o :o :o
Doug
-
LOL I don't think the VBCW guys would ever forgive me if I did that, tempting as it might be!

Some bookshelves for that tricky library scenario, carved (or rather scraped with a pencil) out of an old foam rubber kneelng pad I found.

They look great!
Carved, you say?
Most impressive.
:-* :-*
You really are getting right into this in a big way, aren't you?
8)
-
;D
Well, in for a penny, in for a pound!
-
That looks really awesome!
-
That's a new approach, most impressive. Thanks for sharing
-
That's reminded me of my prop making. If you take EVA craft foam, score it, then play a hairdryer/heatgun over it, the cuts will open up, so You could try something similar rather than cutting out.
-
Nicely done, JP.

Cheers guys!
Great pic Koyote!
Thanks Azzabat - will give that a go sometime.
-
very nice stuff JP!
great Idea too - I may have to steal the idea to add some variety to me scenery!
-
Thanks! (And feel free to steal!)
-
That looks amazing JP. Just make another 20. :D

LOL might take me a while!

nice rats and spiders mate.
I have the same ones sitting in the "to do" box... Why so may mobs to paint :(

Cheers!
You know I really wish they'd stop releasing all these supplements - too many new models to buy and paint :D

"Arise my pets and do my evil bidding!"
My take on the Lich Lord, giving him a King in Yellow vibe, and some zombie minions to do his noisome work...

Figures are Reaper Bones.

Nice work on the vermin and undead! I like the king in yellow theme for the lich. 'Where flap the tatters of the king.'

Thanks!

Awesome spiders, and I really like that lich model. Where is he from?
-

Thanks! He's a Reaper Bones mini.
-
What ho chums,
It was a hard fight, but I finally succumbed to the lure of Frostgrave!
Seeing as I didn't have any fantasy figures in my collection, I've had to start from scratch.
Here's my first bunch of minions, some thugs...
...and a couple of archers...
...and a couple of men-at-arms.
I hope you like them!
These minis are nice, what box kits did you use for theM?
-
They are mainly Fireforge Mongol infantry, with a few Fireforge Foot Sergeant bodies and arms and I think one Gripping Beast Arab. Very cleverly combined for a unique and characterful band if eastern adventurers. Well done jp1885
-
Thanks!
Tyrion's absolutely correct.
Here's some more mixing. For example the crossbowman in the middle is a Fireforge Mongol head on a GB Viking body, with Fireforge men-at-arms arms.
-
Very good kitbashing, characterful soldiers!!!
-
Thanks!
-
I wish each manufacturer (GBP, Perry & Fireforge) offered a Sprue dream pack (or sample pack). Like 1 sprue from each box, in the pack. Then one could go crazy mixing them up and figure out what they like.
-
Thanks!

This is absolutely awesome! So all the GBP and Fireforge stuff interchanges very well? I know the Frostgrave soldiers don't becuase they are ball and socket. Do the heads and arms line up well between GBP and Fireforge?
-
Not a 100% fit, but the plastic is easy to cut with some clippers, so with a bit of snipping and some superglue it's all good :)
-

Thank you for all your help!
What's the best filler to buy for miniatures? Like how do you get rid of the seams between the head and arms?
-
I usually don't bother - relying on the glue and the paintjob to hide the joins. However if need be I use Milliput or Greenstuff (not sure what they're called in the US).

I see both here on Amazon.com. Lots of variations of both. Maybe different colored packages --- they really do like to confuse things!
-
Luckily I'm limited to what I can find in the UK - yellow and green in both cases. Milliput is better for helping stick bits together, while Greenstuff is better for blending in and sculpting bits (fur, pouches, and whole figures; but that's a completely different ballgame that I have no knowledge of).
-
Some more bits of scenery...

Some stonework - Polystyrene packaging.
-
Nice terrain :) Like how you made those bookshelves.
I suppose I could make some book shelves with 1/2" rigid insulation (pink foam). I need a ton of them for the library scenario.
-
Thanks!
-
loving the well! I have already taken the lid from a jar to steal! lol
-
Lol that's the spirit!
-
Coffee jar lid lids in this house are now in severe danger of ending up in a frozed city - smart idea.
Right then - let's have a layout shot of all this great stuff you've been making. You must have a good stack of goodies by now.
Well done Sir....!
Doug

:D Thanks mate!
Got a day's gaming with Giles in a couple of weeks, so will put most of it out then :)

Me again,
Treated myself to a chunky piece of aquarium scenery the other day, and a short while later turned this:

For goodness sake man; calm down - I can't keep up...! :D
Actually, this is perfectly timed because I've just received my wedding cake pillars from China to go on my Frostgrave temple and, because they are supplied in transparent plastic, I've been wondering what colour to paint them. Now I know - just copy yours ;) :D :)
Doug
-
Coincidentally I've just undercoated a bunch of wedding cake pillars this evening... :D
-
Looking classic JP...looking forward to an invite off you or Doug to the big day!
-
All this nice aquarium stuff. :) All my pillars are of corrugated cardboard & bamboo skewers. And most of my ruin walls are 1/2" rigid insulation (pink foam).

Ah, well you're blessed with skill, time and patience - alas I am somewhat lacking in such things :p
Looking classic JP...looking forward to an invite off you or Doug to the big day!
You're welcome to pop over to JP Mansions and have a crack at Frostgrave whenever you're free mate! (usual caveats about work, kids, wife's shifts apply) Me and Giles are having a bash soon - will email you the details :D

Are yours transparent?
Doug

No, 3" white plastic cake decorations - got them from Amazon.

Don't like to boast but mine are 5 inchers......But I don't want you getting pillar-envy.... lol

Some pillars for the 'Complex Temple' scenario, and of course for general scenery.

3" Wilton plastic cake decoration pillars :)
-
$10 / 7 quid for eight on Amazon right now -- not bad.
Tempted to buy them.
Love the red color. What made you decide to go red ?
How heavy are they? I guess you can weigh them down internally some how if too light.
Wouldn't it be cute to like glue on some arms and weapons? :)
-
Nice!
The red, not something that I would have thought of, works really well.
:-* :-*
-
Thanks :D
I decided to go for red after getting fed up with painting everything grey! Plus, being magical pillars that fight back (now why didn't I think of adding arms!?) I thought going for a different colour would be fun.
Jennifer, they're not massively heavy, being hollow throughout, but the bases are pretty wide (about 1") so they stand firmly. All I did to block the hole was lay some adhesive tape over the top, so that hasn't made it top-heavy.
-
Such a great idea! Now I'm continually eying the red paint on my desk wondering if I can do as good a job! ;)
-
Sure you can - it's just lots of drybrushing :D
-
Been pondering what colour to paint my pillars (you know, those mighty 5 inchers I mentioned earlier...?). Problem now solved - copying yours.
I must say, yours may lack the size but they nicer than the ones I got - particularly the plinth and capital (or finial) - I looked those words up, by the way; isn't wargaming educational?
They look the bee's knees, jp - congratulations....
Doug
-
Ah, it's not the size of your column, but how you paint it ;D
Finials eh? Learning is fun!
Cheers Doug!
-
Just finishing some little bits of scenery - not my best work (especially the corner pieces) but at least they're done...

Wow nice, love the bookshelves. Also how did you do those little ruins pieces? love them. Very nice detail!

Nice little additions, mate.
Full of character.
:-* :-*
I think I spy some doll's house stuff there, too....
-
Wow nice, love the bookshelves. Also how did you do those little ruins pieces? love them. Very nice detail!
Ah, I cheated with the ruins - they're from the Italeri 1:72 scale plastic WW2 ruins set. Very disappointing in that the other side of the walls are hollow, so I had to fill them in with whatever I had to hand (bits of packing foam in this case).
I think I spy some doll's house stuff there, too....
Yep, some bits left over from when I made some improvised barricades for my VBCW stuff :D
-
Just got my minis in today.. the Frostgrave soldiers, GBP vikings & dark age warriors.
Wow they are much smaller than I thought. Smaller than average reaper mini. Glad I got them before I finished up all my ruins pieces.. I am thinking much of my terrain is kind of large scaled. Gonna be making smaller ruins pieces now to complement the larger ones and the new minis.
Guessing UK 25mm minis are smaller on average than reaper. is this right?
-
Yeah, Reaper are on the slightly larger side IMHO, but they still mix in well I think - my warband is largely a mix of Reaper and Fireforge/GB kitbashes and I have no problem with the size difference. Probably wouldn't hurt to make some slightly smaller pieces, but personally I wouldn't let it bother you too much :D
-
Lots of nice ideas, I especially like the red pillars & the table/ chairs & skulls on one mini diorama base. Well done.
-
Thanks!

Thanks for the pic - I'm heading to your blog just as soon as I finish here.
Doug

Nice and Busy. Lots of terrain.

Cheers guys! :D
-
BOOM! That looks flippin marvelous. Well done fella. Well worth the time and effort you have put in.

Thanks mate! Doesn't hold a candle to your terrain, but I'll be happy with it once I've done some taller walls and multi storey buildings.

Very imaginative use of a variety of different figures and the narrative on your blog was enjoyable and entertaining.

My they look very familiar. I have had that foo dog in my lead pile since the eighties and it had never seen even a lick of paint. It is good to see it finally fulfilling its little lead destiny.
I read the background on the blog...great stuff.

With a bit of paint and a little backstory you have transformed these miniatures into something special. Bravo !
I quite like Alonso's construct, it is a fair dude :D

Great stuff, jp - looks glorious and sounds like a lot of fun.
Quick question. Your snow. Permanent or loose scattered? If the latter, what do you use?
Doug
-
Cheers mate!
The tumps of snow are scattered on. They're simply bits of packing sponge/foam, cut into shape with scissors, then sprayed white, given a dark wash and then drybrushed with white.
-
Been busy lately so only just caught up with your progress!
Great inspiration as always and I love those piles of snow - so simple but effective!
-
Thanks!
I wish I'd shaded them a bit more in retrospect, as they don't really stand out when viewed from standing, but they'll do.
-
I like your table, properly cluttered with short line of sight, just how it should be IMO.
-
Thanks! Yeah, it really mixed things up, not being able to shoot at much.

Great Scenario! Simple yet complex, creative, and filled with flair!
-
Excellent scenario! It would also be good to let a third player run the Assassin, although the Assassin's order of operations makes it easy for him to be used as an AI opponent.
-
Thanks guys! Feel free to try it out and let me know how it pans out :)
It would also be good to let a third player run the Assassin
Good call - I'll add that to the scenario when I get a mo.

Some more soldiers to fill the ranks - some archers (two destined to be cultists), a knight, ranger and bard.
Write-up and photos as usual at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/broken-band.html

My aim is to paint enough figures to field a couple of warbands in addition to Thaddeus’ Mongol themed band and von Unaussprechlichen’s cultists, enabling me to host some introductory games at my local wargames club (https://herefordwargamers.wordpress.com/).

Oh, and here's a natty little turns counter I knocked up from a Heroclix base...

You're always one step ahead of me!! ;D
I literally received 2 of those archers in the post yesterday for my Bretonnian themed warband!! Hoping to build a second so the kids can try it.
Love the bard!

A couple of Wraith Knights, which I found an absolute bugger to paint for some reason :(
-
I like those!
Andres
-
Thanks Andres! I really didn't like them at first, due to the trouble I had painting them, but they're growing on me now :)
-
My only criticism of the wraiths is the choice of the bright gold! maybe a duller gold/burnished gold or bronze with some blue ageing. Or the old brown rusty iron is always a nice choice.
-
I agree, but by the time I got to the gold I'd had enough! :D
-
Quick wash of Nuln Oil?
-
I might give the gold bits a green wash or somesuch :)
-
Green wash over the gold will definitely do it!
-
Some big ol' giants!

One Reaper Bones Stone Giant and one Poundland action figure. More waffle at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/they-might-be-giants.html
(Newly corroded Wraith Knights added for ayak33 :D)
-
They are amazing JP. That big hill giant is the business- he has painted up lovely! and I love the bit of narrative on you blog- that is a fantastic bit of flash fiction.
-
Cheers mate!
-
Pretty great stuff. I think I'm gonna steal the ideas of the bottlecaps for the statue plinths.
-
Thanks, and steal away :D
-
The toy giant is very convincing, I like him more than the Reaper one. If I found a cheap plastic toy gorilla I have an idea for a troll conversion.
-
Thanks! I'm really pleased with how he turned out, though I also have a soft spot for the Reaper one :)
-
I think I agree with Reed - the toy giant is fantastic. I'll definitely be sticking my head into the local poundland in the hope that they have one for me!! 😛
-
You never know your luck!

I have that same set mate!
Drill out the windows and file them in and they'll look 2x as good!
(just be ready to repaint them!).
-
Not a bad idea!
-
nice kit that. have you got a link?

Some generic adventurers to help fill out the warbands...
These are from Midlam Miniatures. They're a little smaller than some, but I still like them (especially the ones dressed for the weather).
Here's a comparison shot (L-R Midlam, Reaper, Midlam, CP Models, Midlam, Fireforge):-
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nkjP1kQPY7I/WVtydP674_I/AAAAAAAAGFc/B8lZZlKwJHcj-7CXXaXcQRxyygruxK2sQCEwYBhgL/s400/FG%2BMidlam%2B%25282%2529.JPG)
-
Hadn't realised that the Midlam models were so short!!
-
Yeah they're a bit dinky - mind you that Reaper knight is pretty tall so it's not the fairest of comparisons.
-
Nicely painted additions. I've had my eye on some of those minis for a while, just may need to now add them to my next shopping list. Thanks for sharing
-
The good news about miniatures of varying sizes is that in real life, people are not all the same height. I am 6' 1" tall. My wife's father is 5'2", almost a full foot shorter than me. My daughter is 5'10", my wife's daughter is 4'11". And size has little to do with ability; while working with the mentally ill, I had a ciworker who was 4'10" and one of the best at nonviolent restraint. People are different sizes but equally capable, and it is alright for our miniatures to reflect this.

Nicely observed and articulated, PR.
-
Indeed, very well said!
I happily mix sizes and look forward to putting these onto the tabletop.
-
To give some real life examples of this phenomena, just look at the Game of Thrones TV series:
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Gregor Clegane "The Mountain"): 6'9" probably into the 275+ pound range.
Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane "The Hound): 6'6", probably into the 230-250 pound range.
Kit Harington (Jon Snow): 5'8", Probably around 160-170 pounds.
Drastically different sizes in reality, but all human. A miniature of The Mountain would be noticeably larger than a miniature of Jon Snow if they were based on the actual actors and built to the same scale.
-
Shhhhh! Don't mention Game of Thrones - I haven't seen series 6 yet!
;)

Mum's the word! Just using the actors as a real life comparison for the argument for differing sizes in miniatures.

Spellcaster/battle-nun Brunhilde and her faithful sidekick Barry take on an evil vampire...
Nice! I actually picked up that same Vampire figure to use for Frostgrave not long ago. Now I just need to paint him... ;)
-
Cheers!
It's a nice mini (though I wasn't keen on the soft detail on the rats, so I painted them as large beetles).
-
Frostgrave goes clubbing!
I took my Frostgrave stuff to the local wargames club for an introductory game. The result was some great fun, with plenty of fluffed spells and critical hits! More details here... http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/06/going-clubbing.html

Flecks of snow whipped around the ruined castle, dancing playfully across the fallen stones that once comprised it's mighty walls. Oddleigh watched as a flurry was blown by the keen wind over a stone disk. He blinked as the playful specks suddenly disappeared...
With the destiny of Britain and Europe changing overnight, what better time to play at wizards? This time it's 'The 'Keep' scenario.

Thanks mate - it was a cracking couple of games (taught me to be more respectful of the push spell as well).

Lovely work on here. Really nice stuff. The tower looks great. I especially like how you put the rubble in the door.

I really like this vampire and you've done a great job on him. A pity his pose is either for a surprise party or jazz hands.
-
lol Thanks!
Personally I think he's a frustrated fisherman - "you should've seen the one that got away; it was -this- big!"
-
lol
Yep that too. Still a very nice mini and the colours you have used are great.
-
Nice setup on the table. It looks like you have quite a variety in your terrain selection. I noticed you have the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic Ruins. Do you have any of the other sets from the Gothic series? I was considering them. But based upon where the second floor is in the ruins, I was wondering if they wouldn't look out of place with other terrain sets. I have some Conflix buildings, Pegasus Hobbies Wizard Tower, and three of the Tabletop Workshop buildings. All these seem to work well together, but the Gothic Ruins I had seemed a bit out of place. I was just wondering if the others would be the same since they are complete buildings.
-
Thanks :)
I don't have any other Pegasus sets, so I can't really comment I'm afraid. However personally I'm happy to have differing height levels and storey heights on the table, so it's not something that's really bothered me.
-
A couple of smaller towers to link up with the main one, for the Silent Tower scenario.

-
Great idea. The huts are the one bit of scenary I've not got round to yet! How have you found the size of a Pringles tube - a good fit for the Haunted Houses scenario?
-
I haven't used them in action yet, but the six of them fit into a 3x3 mat with plenty of room for other scenery. Each hut has enough room for two figures and a treadure marker (all on 25mm bases).
-
That sounds pretty much perfect size then! Let us know how well they work in play 😁
-

Some magical factory scatter terrain made with stuff left over from my re-purposed Warhammer 40K ruins – lamps, beams and other embellishments that looked a bit too sci-fi for Frostgrave. To these I added various bits and off-cuts and rifled the bin for empty paint pots and other bits of rubbish.

“Everybody shout! C’mon now sing out! It’s time for the Goolies’ get-together…”
The thing that was once Matthias Trueblade shook the song from it’s misshapen head. It was on the hunt and had no time for childish rhymes from the time before it became a ghoul. Before it had taken up the sword… before it had come to the frozen city… before it became trapped, close to starvation… before it had stumbled across half-dead remains and found the taste pleasing…

Thanks guys!
The 40K stuff is pretty suitable for Frostgrave if you file off or cover up the sci-fi elements.

Some more specialists for my warbands in the form of a tunnel fighter, trap expert, javelineer, crow master (still need to find a crow), apothecary and a small but ferocious warhound.
-
Nice nice nice! Lots of stuff from the Cultists sprues, right?
And that dog is just too cool...is this Terror 3? ;)
-
LOL maybe!
You're correct: tunnel fighter, trap expert, javelineer and crow master are mainly from the cultist sprue, with bits from other sprues (Fireforge Mongols etc.) added into the mix. The warhound is from a Mantic dwarf sprue while I nabbed the apothecary off this esteemed Forum.

Inspirational creations as always!

Nice additions, cool kitbashes and well painted. Thanks for sharing.
I haven't yet got a copy of Into the Breeding Pits, so just wondered how are the Tunnel Fighter and Trap Expert equipped? How do they differ the Treasure Hunter and Thief?

Very basically the tunnel fighter has a better chance of spotting secret passages (which allow you to move through walls and such) and the trap expert has a better chance of your opponent setting off traps. Rules for secret passages and traps are obviously in the Breeding Pits book.

Thanks for the info :)

Old Mother Goosegog hitches up her skirt to climb the Silent Tower... I've written a brand new batrep, which can be found at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/mother-goosegog-and-silent-tower.html
However if clicking on links and reading stuff isn't your thing, here are some (rather poor and blurry) photos!

Poor Fluffy! But you painted a new Warhound last week, right? :)

Luckily I have a spare cupboard at work - it's getting pretty full now though! Most of what you see in the last two reports belongs to Giles_the_Zog anyway :)
Poor Fluffy! But you painted a new Warhound last week, right? :)
LOL yep... :D

You really have torn into this project, haven't you, mate?
That is now a most impressive, and busy, set-up you have going on.

Thanks mate! I can't lay claim to most of the terrain this time - impressive as it is!

So it was the weekend, the kids were in bed, my good lady wife was on a late shift and I had a boot full of Frostgrave stuff from the previous day’s gaming. Also I wanted to improve my Witch warband a bit, so… Dark Alchemy anyone?
Well, two-thirds at least, starting off the the Alchemical Monstrosity... http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/mother-goosegog-and-alchemical.html

Interesting AARs, with nice terrain and minis too. Thanks for sharing

JP, I haven't looked at this thread or any Frostgrave stuff for most of this year and so reading of your exploits and looking at what you've done with figures and scenery is mind-blowing. It looks super-terriffic-fantastic; brilliant work - well done. I think you've rekindled my interest - thanks. :D
Which begs the question: in the absence of a Hereford VBCW game this autumn, what about a Frostgrave extravaganza....?
Just sayin' ;)

Cheers mate - glad you're enjoying my modest efforts!
As for a 'big game' - alas we had to shelve the VBCW one this autumn due to real life stuff, so a Frostgrave one is unlikely for the same reasons (plus I'm wary of putting too much effort into organising one - organising the VBCW games have become something of a chore that have kinda sucked the joy out of it for me and I don't want Frostgrave to go the same way!)
However if you're ever back in this neck of the woods I daresay a small get-together could be arranged given enough notice.

I can understand that JP - and it would be a shame if you lost your Frostgrave mojo for any reason. Playing on your great looking Frostgrave set-up is certainly a great incentive for a visit back up Hereford way; I'll see if I can subtley suggest a good reason for my wife to visit someone and absolutely insist that I do the driving for her :D
We had a weekend Frostgrave here earlier in the year (or was it late last year?) and that worked very well. There were about 10-12 players as I recall with 2 umpires and a good time was had by all. We probably would have done more but the pub we played in was closed down :( (not because of us, I hasten to add). So it works as a multi-player, weekend campaign.
Anyway, now I'm back on your thread, I'm looking forward to seeing more of what you're up to - both AARs and in new scenery/figures.

Great reads! Not too long, very clear, good pictures...what's not to like. And Dark Alchemy is such a great little campaign!

Thanks mate! Yeah, I'm really enjoying the DA scenarios so far - challenging but not impossible. Just need to find time for the final encounter... ;D
-
Thanks mate! Yeah, I'm really enjoying the DA scenarios so far - challenging but not impossible. Just need to find time for the final encounter... ;D
Just ordered Fireforge Foot Sergeants and Steppe Warriors :) So I can do some more kit-bashing, similar to what you've done. I really like the looks of your characters.
So after I get those two, I will have a total of 5 different sprue sets including FG Soldiers, Viking HIrdmen, Dark Age Warriors also. I only plan on using 1/2 of the foot sergeant sprues and selling the other sprues on ebay as a 1/2 box. But of what I will have available, it's about 90 sprue characters total. That's more than enough to build the "six of each class" I was intending on doing. Going to limit party formation to a max of 3 of the same class for each player. Should be enough to play many different games with different types of warbands.
-
Sounds like a plan!

Here come the Gnolls!
Thugs, men at arms and infantrymen, made up from the plastic box set, and a shaman of unknown manufacture (given to me by as mate - top of the staff fixed by me).
http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/gnoll-desperandum.html refers :)
-
Cool stuff! They look really cool...I prefer gnolls the way you painted them, like hyenas. Really makes them pop well.
-
Thanks mate!
I was toying with the idea of colour coding them by soldier type, but decided to go with a hyena like scheme to tie them all together.
-
Hi,
The shaman figure is a "Fox Priest" from the old Citadel Wizard range.
;)

Cheers!

Cute :)

Cheers :D

It's very kind of you to say so - thanks!

Some more Gnolls now, a brace each of treasure hunter, knight and templar.

Good stuff as always. Mean fighting machines! At first didn't like the gnolls that much, but with your paintjobs they sure are growing on me.
-
It's very nice of you to say so, thanks!
For some reason I've found these minis quite an effort to paint - nothing wrong with them, but maybe these plastics don't suit my old-fashioned drybrushing technique - but I'm reasonably pleased with how they've turned out.
The rest of the tribe will be Reaper minis...
-
A few more games over the weekend, starting off with a delve into The Library. I hope you've remembered your library card...

Urgh! That start with the two 20s suck...can imagine you lost heart there. Getting off with a bad start can make it hard to get back into it.
And honestly: I don't like wizards throwing multiple walls around the table, espcially in a dungeon. I'd say 1 should be the maximum allowed. It's just too easy to abuse that spell.
That last DA game sounded cool. Having some injuries isn't too bad and it brings some tension to the table :)
-
Well I'm guilty of the occasional wall spell myself, so I shouldn't complain really. The fun part was when my opponent rolled a 17+ for each one at the start of one round and they all disappeared...
Yeah, the DA campaign was pretty fun throughout, especially for a solo game - very enjoyable.

The roll of two 20's was embarrassing for me, I had to literally walk away from the dice and let JP see it.
Ironically, I only rolled three 20's in the entire day (so only one for my actual war band), and my record on initiative rolls is appalling.
AS for walls, yes, I got bored of them and scrabbled around for alternatives, hence the Push spell against the Imp in the library scenario. I think we had 5 walls up at one point - not all mine.
Still, I now have more spells for Lady Catherine, which should put paid to such nonsense. >:D
-
Oh I think we all picked spells which we 'abused' because they work so well. We had the same with Bone Dart or Leap. But now we tend to go for spells which are useful but not the 'best' options. Similar to you pushing the Imps around...using spells that way now is much more fun to me than using the 'good ones' too much. But that's personal preference! For my next warband I'll be using a Thamateurge with all kinds of spells which are new to me. Can't wait 8)
-
agreed. a lot of fun trying all the diff wizards and combos...I love this game!!! lol
-
If only there was a 'comfortably win combat' spell I could abuse lol
-
You should introduce a new spell:
Illusionists - Fatemaker: Whenever this model rolls a 1, count it as a 20 instead.
:D

lol lol lol lol

The big Reaper troll is a great mini and you've done a great job on him and his little minions.

Thanks! :D

They look great! I plan on giving the large one a beard and making it a frost giant.

Sounds like a plan :D

“We have proven that demons can be called forth through the good offices of many mediums; summoning circles being the most common of them, but also portal mirrors, cauldrons and the like. But today we will explore what happens if that medium is in fact a living creature.”
A murmur spread throughout the class. Many had heard about possession, and what they had heard was not nice…
“Now, turn to page three-hundred and five in your textbooks.” He turned to the classroom door. “Mrs. Muntley, if you please!”
I intend to use this chap for any mini under the effects of the possess spell. It's a rather nice figure from the Conan board game.

Some more MDF loveliness from Dark Ops in the shape of 'Wall Set 2' - a pair of large (2" x 9") walls with metal railings.
My order also came with an extra sheet of the main pieces (the railings and capping were on a separate sheet), so I glued some of the 'push out' bits of MDF on them.

Managed to cram in two games last Friday - each one a madcap four-warband scrapfest!

The crow has been snipped off a Zombicide 'murder of crowz' model, whilst the crow master is mainly a plastic cultist figure with Mongol head and arm.

Awesome updates as usual man! And very cool to see that Ettin painted up, it's such a cool miniature and so perfect for this game 8)

Reaper did a nice job on that Ettin figure.
It strikes me that some of the Hordes line from PP might also make good trolls (of one or two heads).

I'll post my DarkOps Mausoleum and graveyard at the weekend to compare notes! I was pleasantly surprised how well it paints up, especially as it's great value for money.
Yeah, just needed to prime and drybrush and they came up a treat.
Look forward to seeing what yours looks like. I dont have the mausoleum (yet).

Well, that was way simpler than what I did!! lol

Wow, that's great! So simple in design and yet so evocative of a sunken wreck.
Cant wait to see it painted!

I am going to copy your build :D. Whats the siding made out of?
-
Also, that is quite the paint-job! looks real!

Thanks! Help yourself to the idea :)
The vertical posts are offcuts of mdf, but matchsticks would work. The horizontal planking is strips of card.
-
Wow, that turned out beautifully! :-*
-
Thanks, I'm pretty pleased with it!

Nice work JP.
-
Great work on the build and the painting.
Might be nice to add some snow effects to it - especially in the nooks and crannies.
-
Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm tempted to add snow...
-
Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm tempted to add snow...
I'd be tempted to add snow too, and I did to my shipwreck; but that was before I knew about Ghost Archipelago...
If you add snow, you won't be able to get double duty from it with both rulesets. Then of course, I guess you could always make another more specific one for GA, with sand and vegetation and such all over it.
-
That's a fair point. Hmm...

A great time was had by all at my local club last night, where I'd been asked to put on another game. I chose the Mausoleum scenario. What transpired can be read at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/desecrating-graves-at-club-night.html

Thanks! They were very quick and easy to make.

Nice! Great variety! I need to get my hands on some balsa wood, coffee stirrers can easily become too uniform...

Hi folks, not one but two battle reports for you today - the first two scenarios in the Lich Lord campaign.
The Total Eclipse (http://frostgravery.blogspot.com/2017/03/darkness-falls-on-thaddeus.html) sees Thaddeus Daemoncall battling his opponent in ever-increasing darkness as strange magic builds up around them.
During the Battle on the River (http://frostgravery.blogspot.com/2017/03/thaddeus-skates-on-thin-ice.html) an evil-looking wizard appears while Thaddeus takes an arrow or two - will he survive...?
For the link-averse, here are some pics of the action.

8) very cool.
-
A couple of great reports and accompanying photos! Your table set-ups are beautiful.
-
Thanks for your comments guys! :)
-
Yes it was a good game, and despite being hamstrung by my USB stick going to silicon heaven, I managed to pull it off without cheating.
Also not mentioned was I was hobbling myself having injured my leg in moving house two days previously - and as it now transpires I had the beginnings of an infection leaving my leg looking like something out of the elephant man.
So next time, I'll turn up with a working spreadsheet with warband details, on time, with no infections etc....
JP also forgot to mention the deployment of the Drain Word spell Holbron cast at the beginning to reduce the use of the pesky bone dart. Next time I'll have my apprentice cast a drain Word spell on this "beauty" nonsense. ;-)
Now I really should get round to doing my blog write ups of these three games. :-)
-
I did appreciate you playing through the pain mate!

And now some 2D shadow creatures to act as Nullmen for the Sellsword supplement. Designed by me (from a pic I borrowed off the internet) and cut out by Gaz from Figurebitz Wargaming Accessories.

Love the Undead paint scheme! What paints did you use?
-
Thanks!
I use Vallejo paints. The skellies were primed black, then the armour drybrushed with gold and given a wash of light turquoise (I was too heavy handed with the dwarf and he ended up looking like a smurf). Cloth was just drybrushed with shades of grey. Skulls were beige, washed with dark brown. The whole thing was then drybrushed with white.
-
I really like those nullmen. I wonder what they would be like on acetate coloured black. Kind of like they have no profile when looked at sideways. Great idea though.
-
Thanks! Yeah, that's a good idea.

Giles and I got two more Thaw of the Lich Lord games under our belts last week - The Storm of Undeath and Run of the
Gnoll Rangifer. Here are links to the respective batreps on my blog:-
http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2017/05/thaddeus-braves-storm-of-undeath.html
http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2017/05/running-with-rangifers.html
Two games of enormous fun with more critical hits than is decent! Armoured skeletons were vanquished, Rangifers were saved killed and at least one wizard and apprentice went down to zero health. Who will survive???
Piccies for the link averse...

Nice write ups, and yes there were far too many 20's rolled in combat by a certain player.
Mind you, just had two games with Jim today, and in the second we both managed to lose our Wizards to rolls of 209's, so it is catching.

Great report! May I ask where you got the small twisted trees from? Or if they were made by you, please share details!

I bought them second hand, but the chap I bought them off printed them off after buying the files from Printable Scenery.

I've just read the AARs. Fantastic!
Awesome scenery and miniatures. It must have been a blast!
Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks! Yeah, both games were tremendous fun!
-
Excellent reports and photos, JP!
It's so interesting to see you guys facing the same issues that we had in both those scenarios as well. Trying to keep those Rangifer alive is a near impossible task. And trying to keep your warband alive in the Storm of Undeath scenario is equally challenging! :)
Congrats on finding The Book! It will be interesting to see what your wizard decides to do.

Those look great, JP. I really like all the muted colors.
-
They look llike quite the ragtag bunch. But the colour palette you used really ties them together!
I'm painting the 5 I got from the Frostgrave Folio Nickstarter and they are quite nice...aside from me being a tad heavy handed with the spray primer.
-
Thanks guys!
Yeah, I deliberately went for a muted palette - somehow I can't see rough men of the north going in for bright colours :D
...aside from me being a tad heavy handed with the spray primer.
Oh yes, know that feeling well!
-
Nice paint jobs.
Any chance I don't have to crack (!) jokes about your barbarian and his thong now ?

Alas the thong shall remain until Gog's demise - it's a form of psychological warfare!

8) very cool...any chance of a close up to the 5th barbarian over?

8) very cool...any chance of a close up to the 5th barbarian over?
Thanks - you mean the chap in the middle of this pic? This is as close-up as I've got (they're packed away now). He's my barbarian thief - a Northstar barbarian body with Fireforge Mongol head. I wanted to make him look hunched and weaselly.

Well I try my best :D
Cheers!

They look really great! I have done the same thing, mixing the gnoll and barbarian parts! Yours are much better painted than mine though!

Nice bunch of angry hairy dudes. May they give you lots of interesting games.

Thanks guys! (And welcome to the forum adventure_85)

"Sir Gwyllaim squinted… yes! It was the thing he sought – Gods be praised! Before him, raised on a circular stone dais, was the legendary Pale Throne of Jogdusu, said to imbue it’s incumbent with the power of teleportation. In short it was his only ticket out of this hellish place."
A quick bit of trash-bashing now, utilising some bits of plastic I found on the floor at work to make a throne and dais. The mini is courtesy of the LAF sprue exchange, so thanks to whoever donated it!
More waffling at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/game-of-throne-or-dais-ex-machina.html

No wonder why the throne looks unclaimed, it must be uncomfortable as hell.

lol It depends on what used to sit on it! :D
-
Nice !
I assume I won't need to bring my throne then ?
:D
-
Thanks mate!
Yep, you can stand down throne-wise, though if you've got any ghouls knocking about we might need them :D
-
Here's my take on the Barbarian outcast Kornovik, from the Forgotten Pacts expansion.
It's an old plastic Battle Masters ogre I found whilst rummaging through the LAF sprue exchange box (I did donate plenty of stuff in return!)
More waffling at http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/mad-bad-and-dangerous-to-know.html
-
Like I said on Facebook, simply awesome. I just love using stand-ins for the models. It's a very creative, surprising and refreshing alternative from using the official stuff. And I think he makes a perfect Kornovik. Gives me a lot of ideas for a Kornovik myself. So kudos 8)
-
:o great job jp...I ave one of em sumplace...hope I can paint em close to that.

Thanks guys! I'm really pleased with how he came out, apart from the tattoos. But then again, tattooing a psychopathic ogre probably isn't going to be a precise art!

Photobucket have decided to disable 3rd party hosting of images, unless I upgrade my account and pay silly money.
Therefore, Photobucket can take a running jump!
Please bear with me while I move my images onto another hosting site and re-link everything on the thread (if I can be bothered after sorting out my blog).

Still sorting out photos on the blog I'm afraid, but that's not going to stop me!
Here are some runic stones and/or mystical pillars I've scratchbuilt. The photos aren't the best, but you get the general idea...

I think the runes look awesome...how did you paint them?
-
Thanks, I'm glad you think so - they don't look as good close up though ;)
Didn't take me long - I drybrushed the rough shape of each rune in light turquoise, painted the rune over this in the same colour and then used a narrower brush to paint over this in white. I then gave the whole thing a light drybrush in white in an attempt to key it all in.
-
8) way cool. great job!
-
One can never have enough standing stones :D
-
Cheers guys!

I think the ruins nailed it. It doesn't matter if it does not look good close up. They will be viewed from at least three feet away. nice job.

Well this is true - thanks!

:D looks great. really like the hydra colors. well dun !!!
-
Thanks! It's a bit more turquoise in real life, but the photo made it look blue-ish.
-
A bit of nitpicking, but I hope you don't mind. Ironing "the snow" would ease the miniatures to stand firmly on it and I think it might look better by getting rid of "playing on a cloth" feeling. ;)
That hydra is very nice! I like it's so scaly. What model is that? Who produced it?
-
Thanks Voyager - the hydra is a Reaper Bones model.
The 'snowy' table cloth wasn't mine, but belonged to my mate, so I can't really comment on that :)
-
Great report on The Keep, JP! Glad to see your dice improved in time to save the day. :)
I was glad to hear you liked the UM cards. I hope to be getting a deck for us to try soon as well. Might be bit crazy though with 8 cards in play at once!
Also, the minis turned out super. And the wizard's eye is really cool. Is that just a bit of painted card?
-
Cheers CP! It's just a round Rendera base painted up.
The UM cards in an 8 player game? That'll be something to behold! You'll need lots of extra terrain as most of the cards need not only the objective piece, but also three red herrings.
-
Thanks for heads up! I guess we'll have to leave a lot of spaces open on the table during the initial set up. The trick will be coming up with a 32 specialized terrain bits on the fly...
-
This is amazing stuff - :o
-
Thanks!

You'll also need a fair few of the wandering monster types to be available. In the game JP, Alan & I played, we had a werewolf and a Zombie required. The later is fairly common, the former not so much, and there are other models required on other cards.
As Scenery Boy - good luck !

Thanks for the warning, Giles! I'm hoping figures should be the easiest part, as we have several of the guy's figure collections to chose from. I can see terrain being the bigger issue, as everyone can easily bring their figure cases to the game; but it's not easy for folks to haul all their terrain. So I'll probably be the main Scenery Boy. :)
Are all the players using the cards mandatory or optional? Can we give some players the choice whether they want to undertake the extra work or pass on it; or would that unbalance things.
Would it be possible to draw the cards at the end of one game to use in the next, so folks could prepare their own terrain between games?
-

I thought the un-ironed snow cloth made for some authentic looking drifts!
-
I thought the un-ironed snow cloth made for some authentic looking drifts!
That's a fair point! Still, personally I would prefer rather flat and solid surface. Just from the practical reasons. I've got some bad experience playing on crumpled blankets or cloths. But anyway, the table was ace! :)
-

Good question. I suppose giving them the option shouldn't be a problem, but be aware that the rules are tweaked slightly when using UM cards. You deploy within 1" rather than 6", treasure placement is different and you get less XP per treasure. If your players tend to fight mainly against those opposite them, it might be worth facing off those who are using the cards, keeping them somewhat separate from those that don't.
Would it be possible to draw the cards at the end of one game to use in the next, so folks could prepare their own terrain between games?
Can't see why not, but be aware that most of the cards have secret objectives, so they'd have to keep tight-lipped until the next game.
-
Thanks, JP, for all your and Giles' thoughts on this. I ordered my set and it should be here in time for our August game. I'll have to read through the rules, discuss it with the group, and see how we want to proceed.
-Chris

Thanks! Yeah, we did too when we first played this campaign. It'll be interesting to see how the next game goes.
-
Looks like a fun game! We accidentally killed the golem during the investigation, effectively ending the campaign...
Yes, hands up for that one too !
This time, when my Apothecary was in combat with the Golem, I did have the bowl of petunias moment "Oh no, not again", especially when the Apothecary actually won combat !
Fortunately, I had not upgraded the Apothecary with elemental hammer, and so he won but did little damage and simply pushed the golem back before doing a runner.
I'll be doing my write up later today.
So the next scenario is on Jon and I have not yet played.
(We moved on to the Liche Lord campaign)

A belated Happy New Year to Frostgravians everywhere! I'm kicking off the new year with some Gnoll archers. May the Dice Gods shine on you throughout 2018 :)

like the grittily uniform look of those a lot. excellent.
-
Thanks! I went for a limited number of colours for these - out of laziness really :)
-
Like those, especially with the use of your "lazy" colours :)

Here then, for those interested, is the epilogue - http://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2018/02/epilogue.html
-
Wow, great conclusion to your stories/report! And congrats on making the final achievement!
So, who is the new mystery lady...? ???
-
Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.
Looks like I'll be facing some of the regulars tomorrow.
-
Great series of games JP. Made for an interesting and entertaining read.
Knabe
-
Thanks guys!
The mystery lady? All will be revealed soon, although she's already appeared in my blog once before...

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce Aeon Flixx: Chronomancer, and her apprentice Brunhilde.

Jon really did have lousy luck on the dice, with virtually every spell roll fluffed, and I even managed to win initiative for 4 turns in a row (something that NEVER happens).
:)
-
Yep, one of those games >:( ;D
-
There are times when even the most pure of heart are vulnerable to corruption. For wargames figure painters this is often the time when he/she asks him/herself: ‘what colour scheme shall we paint this in?’
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9bNXZhj1ogE/WoGc42H8flI/AAAAAAAAG08/ngn5Om4scdAjeALlenoHYYZpz7FfFQ_VACLcBGAs/s1600/FG%2BTszisirain%2B%25283%2529.JPG)
One cursed night this happened to me. I had found a great model – a Reaper Bones Frost Wyrm - that I wanted to use to represent Tiszirain: demon lord of victory and consumption. Little did I know that this aspect of the creature is also the demon of poor painting decisions! Unaware of the danger, I merely listened as, what I thought was my inner painter’s voice said: ‘Go on, paint it yellow. You love painting yellow…’
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JeBUinRiWXc/WoGdEMmPxbI/AAAAAAAAG1A/KuGjKHeB9IgipwSwol5qQek_W523o1GpACLcBGAs/s1600/FG%2BTszisirain%2B%25282%2529.JPG)
Then, with a slight chuckle, I heard the words: ‘oh, as a matter of fact, why not push the boat out and go for a black and yellow-striped wasp theme?’ And then, it laughed: ‘and paint my Chilopendra minions yellow too...’ for I had recently undercoated some CP Models Gene Reaper aliens for these demonic underlings. 'Paint a black stripe on them too,' it giggled. 'Oh dear, you've made them look worse - never mind, paint over it with... more yellow!'
By now the thing was roaring with malicious mirth, gibbering sarcastic encouragement as I wrestled with my chosen colour scheme. ‘Green or brown wash? I think green…’, ‘no, add more water… oh look, it’s puddling around the bases…’, ‘just go for your standard quickstain, it won’t dirty the yellow at all…’
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZcxmXXucz48/WoGdJ_teTCI/AAAAAAAAG1E/TjY0s_qewKEn_HSV8F3VJEaTYguvZsBdQCLcBGAs/s1600/FG%2BTszisirain%2B%25281%2529.JPG)
By the time I got to the drybrushing I was howling in anguish! However, battling on I hung on to whatever sanity I could grasp and eventually applied the final coat of varnish - the hateful things were done! Confident that I had exorcised the monster, I reached for the next model in the pile – a CP Models Three-headed Lurker that I wanted to use as a Toravor (a multi-headed burrowing demon). With renewed confidence I opened my paints tub, as the voice sniggered: ‘Go on, paint it orange…’
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dNyw9qtwhSA/WoGdPEEtTjI/AAAAAAAAG1I/ih7O7I7LSrgTvsbQHR-BQJvSEgtb7yoTQCLcBGAs/s1600/FG%2BToravor.JPG)

Great introductory report! I like your new characters, and look forward to following their journey.
I hate games like that where the dice are against you...in my last game, the fellow next to me asked if my d20 had only single digit numbers on it! :?
I played a Chronomancer off and on at the FLGS's Frostgrave Campaign. I slowly whittled down my Elemental Bolt casting number (He had recovered a dodgy laser-pistol on some foray to the future), until he and his apprentice were quite deadly to all who thwarted them.
I also love your commentary on painting. It takes a bit of talent to turn a disastrous painting session into a narrative gem. :) Actually, I think they all look quite nice in a demony sort of way!
-
Thanks mate - glad you like my recent output :)
-
A couple of extra models to show you before half term - an assassin (Reaper Minis) and a broken cart (Alternative Armies).

yes, tile pieces are nice touches.
be good if you can find a way to 'bed them in' a bit somehow.
-
Cheers guys!
be good if you can find a way to 'bed them in' a bit somehow.
I agree, but it's difficult to achieve this on a felt mat, and I wanted to be able to place them anywhere on the table, rather than embed them in permanently :)
-
bit of pva around the edges, and scatter with grey gravel?
-
Hmm, yeah, I might give that a try!
-
Congratulations on reaching the 50 page mark of the 'side project'.
You have certainly done a whole lot of different things for this.
Well done, sir!
:D 8) :D
-
50 pages? Blimey, so it is!
Now I just have to go through forty-odd pages of broken Photobucket links!
-
After much consideration I finally settled on a model for the demon Ambronnax from the Forgotten Pacts expansion.

And also some minis for the Failing Wretches.

top miniatures and painting.

Thanks! :D
-
8) way cool!!!
-
Cheers Liam :D
-
Nice use of the Spawn of Yog Sothoth. It's a disturbing mini! It's still sitting in my "to do" pile screaming "Pin my tentacles in please!"
-
Thanks!
The tentacles are actually pretty easy to pin as their bases are wide enough to drill into.
-
Congratulations on reaching the 50 page mark of the 'side project'.
So to celebrate this 50 page landmark, I've decided to hold a small competition! Click on this link - https://frostgravery.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/50th-lead-adventure-page-giveaway.html - for details :)

that's rather fantastic, indeed. also great scale in comparison to the puny human.

Thanks!
I did wonder if the model was too big for the stats, but hey ho.

looks good.
I've got one of those flagstone mats I think - UK seller on a kind of felt-like material?

Yep - Ceri Designs.

yes, very good and well-priced.
technique they use gives a faint 3d impression which comes across very well in the photos of your super-looking game.

I like that sculpt, and you did a great job with the paint, too!

Thanks! He was a fun model to paint :)

actually I thought that was an 'official' photo for some reason - yes, superb paint job.
-
Very nice of you to say so - thanks!

Really good paint job JP

Cheers matey :D

Wow, I completely forgot that CP Models had a 28mm range. For some reason they seemed like just a 1/72nd company to me. That thing looks like some cartoon cat creature out of a weird kid's show that thought real life puppets was a good idea.
...Or its just a gribbly monster. Its late here. Heh, the paint job's fine regardless. :)

Love the batrep. That table looks awesome! Crammed with terrain... You're playin' this game right. Also great name choice for the Chronomancer, heh.

Thanks!
It's not the most original name, but it suffices :)

The weather’s been too nice for hobby stuff recently, but I have found time to paint up a bunch of bits from last year’s Mantic Terrain Crate Kickstarter, which came up with the goods recently...

Closer photos on the blog.
-
Well done! That's quite a lot of extra small pieces of terrain for your tabel and they all fit Frostgrave really well 8) What kind of plastic does Mantic use for these pieces of scenery? What did you think of the quality of the pieces?
-
Thanks!
They're made of a soft-ish plastic, not unlike the Reaper Bones material. The vast majority of the pieces needed no prep, but a couple of bits were bent, which suited me as they're supposed to be ruined!
Apparently they can be straightened by immersing in hot water and then rapidly cooling.
-
As a follow up to JP's comment, the pieces come in a variety of plastics, mostly the softish stuff he had, but there is some terrain that's quite hard plastic/resin.
I will photo the range I think before I paint more stuff.
The quality is all good, and as JP notes what is bent can be re-worked easily enough.
-
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KXM_lPo3fls/W2hE0H2-gOI/AAAAAAAAHOw/QEhL13IyYfIf1xT8lmXONoJDc9CIvRTqACLcBGAs/s1600/FG%2Bprincesses%2B%25281%2529.JPG)
Once upon a time there were two beautiful princesses. This royal pair of siblings did what all good princesses do in stories that begin with ‘once upon a time’: they sang songs about love and suchlike, held elegant balls full of handsome princes, befriended small woodland creatures and generally acted prettily.
Of course what the stories that begin with ‘once upon a time’ don’t tell you is what happens to the third, less attractive sister the pair kept locked up in a miserable basement of their pretty princesses’ castle...
http://frostgravery.blogspot.com/2018/08/an-eye-for-ladies.html continues the story.
The summer holidays continue to take up what little free time I have, but taking advantage of a summer sort-out I did manage to rescue some old toys from the bin, including two Disney princess figures and a plastic scroll. The princesses were glued onto plinths (okay, tops from Capri Sun orange pouches) whilst the scroll was simply stuck to a base.
The former will serve nicely as extra statues whilst the latter will serve as a wizard eye marker (and as such I also painted the underside of the base so that it can hang off walls too).
-
Nicely done, you can never have too many statues. They are great:-
scenery; cover; plot points & can hide trap doors, messages as well as valuable jewels.
-
Cheers!
-
Translation:
I stole them from my daughters.
:D
They do look good though.
-
lol
From the bin, honest!

8) very cool idea...the scroll flip is awesome!!!

blimey, runes are good - seem to be genuinely glowing.

You are seriously knocking everyone out of the park with your scenery! Well done!
-
Thanks! Though there are plenty of other modellers dong a cracking job ;)
As a matter of fact I'm a bit stuck regarding the rest of the Malcor scenery, so I'll be quiet for a while, while I do some pondering.
-
What are you stuck on? Maybe we, the community, can help you with some ideas?
-
Well I've no idea where to start on the gondolas, and, for what seems like an easy build, I'm also surprisingly stuck on the display cabinets.
-
By display cabinets do you mean like a kitchen sideboard? Like a cupboard at the bottom with shelves above?
I’ve seen some very simple but effective cupboards made out of a jenga block with card doors glued on the front. I’ve also seen and made some bookshelves using lollipop sticks for the sides, back and shelves. I’ve never seen the two combined, but you could do a sideboard style display cabinet using a jenga block cupboard below with a lollipop stick shelving unit on top.
-
More like long flat museum display cabinets. The book states 6" long, 1" wide and 1" high.
-
Ah ok. Can’t help you there then sorry
-
something maybe like

A great find - enjoyed the write up on your blog as well
lol

I took one look at the giant insect and contracted out the pinning, Richard had a similar colourful description of the build. At least he was happier with the Rangifer Shaman build.
Now when are you going to get them on to the battlefield ?
-
One look at the giant mantis and I decided that I’ll not be buying that one and building it myself. It looks like an absolute nightmare, haha. That said, the paint job on all of them looks great. I especially like the spiders.

Thanks! Keep plugging away at that list :)

My freaking goodness those are epic!! I like all your stuff but these guys are next level!
-
These are beautifully painted, well done.
-
Cheers guys!
Considering I was this close to repainting them, I'm pretty pleased with the response so far :)
-
Well, if you want to redo them, send those ones to me haha. They are gorgeous!
-
lol Y'know what? I'll keep hold of 'em.
-
:o awesome.
-
Thanks, glad you like 'em!
-
Stunning minis JP
-
Cheers dude :D

Ghosts are pretty hard to paint in my opinion- you nailed it. The colors are great.
-
Thanks. Looks like I made the right decision!
-
Very nice blending on those. They came out well and I like the color pallet.
-
Thanks - the blending in this case is just plenty of drybrushing.
-
As intruders steal into the prestigious Collegium of Artistry, it’s headmaster Malcor summons forth the spirits of long-dead teachers from ...
Very nice.
As others have commented painting ghosts, wights and other ethereal undead is very difficult without reducing them to boring white.
Now all you have to do is get them on the tab le for a game !
;-)
-
:o :o
Those Shades are beautifully finished, very ghostly.
Love the colour!
:-* :-*
-
Thanks guys!
Giles, I fully intend to get them on the table - one day! :D
-
they're fantastic.
goodness only knows why you were going to redo them! o_o
can't say how much I envy chaps who can both conceive of such a paint-scheme and then execute it so well ...

Thankyou :D

You know when a seemingly easy modelling project takes way longer than it should to complete and the results are nowhere near as good as you’d hoped?
So you end up slapping on a coat of paint and saying ‘bugger it, that’ll do’? Oh, and you can’t even be bothered to take decent photos?
Here are some display cases for the Relic Room scenario from Maze of Malcor (approximately 6" long, 1" wide and 1" tall as per spec).

They do look the part. Nice job all around.
-
Nice of you to say so - thanks! :)
-
Well, you get stuff finished. There's that.
I finally had the courage to pick up my brush again and half my paint had dried up. And let's not even begin with the pile of crap I have lying around with which I WISH I did something scenery-wise.
But anyways, while I guess I see what you mean, they do look fine. They have a dusty look, which is good for a city left alone for a long time, and I am guessing you wish to play with them too, so making them detailed for detail's sake is just going to make them less playable. I think you struck a fine middle ground.
-
Thanks Daniel. As usual I'm probably being too critical, and as you say, at least they're done!
-
Everyone's their own worst critic, so don't worry about it.

Never seen or heard of this before but quite a novel idea.
Seems like a super simple way to introduce people to miniature gaming.
And the requirements are so simple. 5 figures, 2 D6, an objective marker and a grid/map.

Yeah, it’s a neat little setup; perfect for a quick living-room game :)

Very cool! That could be a fun little classroom game when kids have had enough of learning!

Gotta love leap days!
Really like the steps in that pringles can tower, and the barrels and crates and multi level pathways. Looks a lot of fun!
-
The scenery is all mine. Th Pringles tube idea was Jon's, so when I cam to do mine I refined it a bit with the staircases. Its just balsa wood strips cut init o pieces and slowly glued together in stages The raised walkways I did for Mordheim, a frighteningly long two decades ago. They too are balsa wood strips.
Crates and barrels are by Mantic, Foundry and IIRC Alternative armies but I bought those 3 decades ago when at uni so my memory is rusty.
The Pringles tube idea is also used for the Haunted Houses scenery which we were playing on the other table and will be writing up shortly.

Nice write-up.
A quick question. If one felt that combat was too random and was uninteresting in the first game do the changes help alleviate that?
I like the system but I always felt that combat came down to whomever rolled highest
-
Thank you for the write-up I can't wait to have a look. I am still waiting for mine to show up.

Thanks! To be honest I've never had any issues with the combat, so I haven't considered if the tweaked rules make it more 'interesting'. Depends if you use the critical hit rule I suppose :)
Thank you for the write-up I can't wait to have a look. I am still waiting for mine to show up.
Cheers! It's worth the wait I think :D

Nice write-up. Looking forward to reading through my copy over the weekend.

Nice write-up, looking forward to our club's order of books dropping and getting back to Felstad (or at least once the wasps have been removed from the hall!).
-
Cheers guys! (Can you incorporate wasp traps into the scenery?)
-
Mine arrived today. Well impressed with the content. I was glad to see more scenarios, the only thing that I would have liked to see the monster from the other books incorporated into one list. Saying that I am still quite happy.
-
The ruined tower model in your pictures(plaster wall sections and stairs)...do you know who produces it? I bought one about 15 years ago at a show and would love to get hold of some more of their terrain but have no idea of the manufacturer.

Hmm, a lot of my terrain is scratchbuilt, and some of it is my mate Giles’. Which pictures are you referring to?
-
If its the round tower, I think that was a repackaged Hirst Arts kit from Antenoceniti which no longer sells them. Its made of plaster building blocks.

Yes, I have returned! After months in the wargaming wilderness, here are a few photos from a recent online game of ROSD. We played a homebrew scenario written by my pal Giles, where our rangers had to face off against some crazed fanatics...
