As a part of my job I travel a lot.
mostly one or two day, so I olny carry hand luggage...
Hotel nights could be boring (I am not a tv watcher). So I thought it might be a good idea to get some solo wargaming under way...:)
I grabed a box (16x10x5 cm) and tried to fill it with some miniatures and scenery. Plastic 28s because of wight. And I had to build some small trees, because my my big one would not fit in.
For a play surface I got one of my old GW gaming matts cut to 60x60 cm, wich happend to lay around. Could be perfectly stuffed beetween the t-shirts.
Rules and scenario are on my smartphone. I used "song of drums and shako" and a converted warhammer skirmish scenario: attaking the inn. But I couldn't get an inn in the box....tooo small.
Then I got the old school idea to just glue some paper stuff on the box...;)
I had three little cool games with the stuff... :D
So here are the box and the play mat in the hotel room.

And all the stuff I squeezed in the box.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/BB2_zpsocathiqn.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/BB2_zpsocathiqn.jpg.html)
And here is a shot of the game.
In the ECW a troop of royalists attack a strong house. Hoping to find valubles...

I had 3 cool games and thonking now of alternative settings... :D
Cheers,
Don

Great idea, especially the storage box doubling up as scenery. Thanks for sharing
-
I know those travelissues very well, its in my job as well. Nice idea to make this in 28mm. I´ve shrinked a Mortheim on Warmasterscale for this purpose serveral years ago. Unfortunatly the set got lost while a travel because a roomcleaner thought the box whould be rubbish :/
-
Hah, that's pretty nifty. How did you turn SD&S into a solo ruleset?
-
Dear god consider this stolen! I was thinking of doing the same thing for frostgrave but the felt matt and terrain box are ingenious :)
-
That is a Great Idea!
However...
If you are traveling, why not ask here at the forum if anyone in the area you are going to is up for a game?
I'm in the Stuttgart area, so let me know if you are heading this way and I'll try to join you for a game (my skill level is very low though)
-
That works well 8)
cheers
James

Thanx for your comments...
Solo-gaming
I just switched sides in my brain...:)
@revfan
Thanx for the invitation. But when I am travalling I am more than exausted in the evening. So I usually just take a shower play something short (mostly on the smartphone) and fall a sleep... :?
Okay, here is another idea I came along: a pub game in a peery blister box (9x7x3 cm).
In germany we had these tradition of playing small things in the pub in the 70s, when there where no mobile gameson the smartphone. You just rolled some die on the table...
Okay, here it is.
I just put some Fimo togehter and builded a few ironclads for the ACW.
Looking a little bit toy like... lol
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/ai1_zpstzfovob7.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/ai1_zpstzfovob7.jpg.html')
and with some paint on them...
And you see the two battlelines: 2 monitors und 2 small torpedo steamer for the north und 2 casemat ships and a ramm for the south.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/ai2_zpsj5muciih.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/ai2_zpsj5muciih.jpg.html')
Made two islands and searched the net for some pick up rules:

And here is everything in the box...:)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/ai4_zpsgntxn61m.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/ai4_zpsgntxn61m.jpg.html')
The next pub night can come along... 8)
Cheers,
Don

Those are brilliant. This sort of thing could be a good seller!
-
Agree on both counts - there's a certain charm to them. And who doesn't like the idea of a wargame in your pocket (or are you just happy to see me)?
-
Great idea and cute ships! I once made some 1/2400 ironclads out of balsa wood…
I love the concept of a transportable minigame, and naval would lend itself very well as you don't need much terrain. Racing games would also work well I guess, provided they use a 'pack' mechanics were you just depict the positions in relation to each other.
There was also a Kickstarter once which had the idea of tiny aliens battling each other over everyday surfaces - so you put a couple of minis on your desk and the mugs, pencils and books are your terrain. I liked this idea very much (although I didn't back the Kickstarter and can't remember what it was called).
-
Okay since you like it: here is another idea...
I had to do something with waterloo cause its 2015...
And I always wanted to do something with a rice army... ;D :o
....and I alwaays wanted to do a game in a matchbox.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/n2_zpsbuq5joeb.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/n2_zpsbuq5joeb.jpg.html)

And everything fits in a matchbox... :)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/n4_zpswzee4f7f.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/n4_zpswzee4f7f.jpg.html)
Cheers,
Don
-
I love the concepts here, especially the matchbox one... It's probably the smallest you can go :) A tiny cannon would be nice :)
-
Impressive :o
What kinda rules you plan to use for that?
-
cool idea. Ionly have one travel game, I use the zombie cards from ATZ.
-
What kinda rules you plan to use for that?
Something that fits on the back of a postcard...something like this...;)

Well you win most creative game of the month from me.
I have always had this idea of a simplified DirtsideII game with the tiny 2mm tanks by germy from GZG, and finding a way to fit them and terrain into some simple box.
-
Outstanding! Those crazy big multi-year construction project tables with thousands of figures and a hundred pounds of terrain are great, but these small and portable cases full of fun take a lot more imagination and creativity. I had always heard about rice figures, but never seen them actually done before. You've won this skeptic over.
-
Don't encourage the madness! It'll be Thuringians in a Thimble next! Lombards in a Locket! Where will it end?! ;)
...
OK, I will encourage the madness: These are very cool little projects, and I might just try something similar, although probably not at the matchbox level!
-
Coming from a 2mm gaming background its nice to see rice on the table and not in a bowl again lol
For mini rules have a look at Irregular Miniatures - fast play and rule box are basic but OK
Also try the PZ8 rules sets - the may need a small handful of rice though...
-
Love it and really inspired to try something really mini like this - never thought I would say well painted rice. Do show us more great ideas.
-
Love the idea.
Irregular Ltd (http://irregularminiatures.co.uk/products.php?cat=2mm&sub=Horse%20and%20Musket&pid=4&subid=25) can help you with is 2mm range in block batallion....
cheers
Eric
-
Brilliance!
(Bordering on madness... ;)).
Love it!
Especially the likkal ships.
:-*
-
All of this stuff is too cool! The rice thing especially is so much fun!
-
About rice, see this picture on from the Irregular web site 2mm shop
(http://irregularminiatures.co.uk/adm/myfiles/2mmScenicsandAccessories.jpg)
that's fit the job ?
-
I love the creativity on this thread. :-* Being able to take a game with you on vacation or business that fits in your carry on or brief case is awesome. The rice army is also a new one for me and Ive been gaming for over 40 years :o I would love to see a small ( ;) sorry I could not help myself) Battle report showing how a tiny game works.
-
Irregular miniatures are a good suggestion see for example these Roman Chariots could have a small and really cheap wargame for less than 1 pound see http://irregularminiatures.co.uk/products.php?cat=6mm&sub=Civilians&pid=11&subid=93

Point of order - you get one chariot for 90p, which means you'll be spending almost six whole quid to get a full six chariots. Still a fantastic way to build an easy-carry game.
Also, Irregular finally updated their website? It looks great and so much easier to navigate. Gotta look at their fantasy building line now.

Here is a new idea for the mini games.
Again in a smallbox.
I wanted to do one of the warhammer skirmish scenarios: the town raid. But how to fit a town in such a small box...?
All i could think of were paper models... o_o
I took the scenario to the HYW and had some english sacking a french town. Again with Songs of Blades...
Okay here are the paperbuildings...I know: very old school...;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/hyw1_zpsu0je6dyq.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/hyw1_zpsu0je6dyq.jpg.html')
But from a distance you cant seemuch of a difference...:D
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/hyw3_zpsvo8lgjxu.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/hyw3_zpsvo8lgjxu.jpg.html')
And here the paper buildings "folded" together one in another...
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/hyw4_zpsd0xyfp60.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/hyw4_zpsd0xyfp60.jpg.html')
And everything in the box....;)
With dice and measering sticks....
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/hyw5_zpsf4xfznig.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/hyw5_zpsf4xfznig.jpg.html')
I know I should put some thing on zhe outside of the box...;)
Cheers,
Don
-
Just discovered this thread: these games are all so gloriously clever!
-
I love that little Ironclad game. I got a big collection of 1/600 ironclads but it can be a pain to carry them around and set up a big enough gaming space. I'd certainly buy a little pocket miniature game like that. :D
-
Thanx gents, glad you like it.
Here is one more: a tavern brawl.
I want to use it with eureka miniatures "All for One".
I love these rules. Very cool until you throw a one...:)
I wanted to do something with the box again.
So I grabed some plastic sheets, balsawood and storodur.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/afo1_zpsm48jlcik.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/afo1_zpsm48jlcik.jpg.html')
First try with some Bones miniatures wich I had laying around...
And some converted Warhammer minis from the leadmountain.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/1800_zpstrqgbanp.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/1800_zpstrqgbanp.jpg.html')
And with somepaint on it.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/afo3_zps35py3fpt.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/afo3_zps35py3fpt.jpg.html')
Very light weight and ex´verythingfits in the box....
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/afo4_zpskjrvpjr2.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/afo4_zpskjrvpjr2.jpg.html)
And all in the box...ready for transport.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/afo5_zpsrm385vfq.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/afo5_zpsrm385vfq.jpg.html)
Cheers,
Don...:)
-
Very nice!
-
I think you're actually a genius.
-
So many cool ideas.
And they are all very nicely executed. There is certainly something very appealing about having a whole game complete in a box.
-
Wow, this is one of the best threads here on the LAF.
-
Great looking game in a box - what rules are you using for that one?
-
Thanx gents....;)
what rules are you using for that one?
Like I said: "All for one" from eureka...
You can download them for free from the eureka website.
Okay, here is another one...
This time: 40k in a matchbox...;)
I remebered the cool battles on armageddon. Orks and blood angels...;)
And I had some epic stuff laying around.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/4k1_zpsm1cg2aub.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/4k1_zpsm1cg2aub.jpg.html')
And splashed somepaint on it.
The match acts as a measaring stick...
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/4k2_zpspnxt8wnz.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/4k2_zpspnxt8wnz.jpg.html')
Not the best paintjob for epic, but my eyes dont work on this small stuff anymore...think I am getting old...:D
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/4k3_zpstpciggez.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/4k3_zpstpciggez.jpg.html')
And everything in the matchbox. Perhaps I should add a cover, but works as a Stealth game too....;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/4k4_zps7h3tvmrd.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/4k4_zps7h3tvmrd.jpg.html')
Cheers,
Don
-
I'm stealing that . Not the idea, that, that exact one, your one right there! lol
Really amazing stuff, the sort of thing i would gladly play in the pub while getting weird looks !
-
That is uber cool. Love the battlefield mat craters and all.
-
Man, I'm stealing that epic idea. Time to buy some 6mm.
-
I can just imagine the conversation were you to accidentally leave one of these behind in a bar or a gaming club....
"excuse me sir, i think i left a matchbox behind last night"
"what was in it exactly? "
"well there was sergeant damocles, brother archirus, heavy bolter brother rathburn, and a dozen filthy xenos."
"........."
-
Glad you like the matchbox thing too....:)
Here is another one I builded yesterday.
Heavy inspired by the very cool 54mm-skirmish game from last years salute. I tried to use the box again as the gaming surface...
The siege of Harfleur.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/h1_zpsyofiockg.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/h1_zpsyofiockg.jpg.html')
I had only five hours yesterday so its a little scetchy...;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/h3_zpszlo4z1lc.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/h3_zpszlo4z1lc.jpg.html')
Box from the outside...
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/h4_zpsrueoutix.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/h4_zpsrueoutix.jpg.html')
Here is a pic of the first testing phase.
Plan to use it with "Songs of..." engine. You can move one field for each activation...and so on.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/h5_zps8ft8hi2b.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/h5_zps8ft8hi2b.jpg.html')
First tried it in 28mm, but way too big. Gladly I had some 1/72 minis laying around.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/h2_zpsda6gqbgn.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/h2_zpsda6gqbgn.jpg.html')
I have to add 2 or3 minis to get the game starting, but you get the idea....;)
Cheers,
Don
-
So inspiring! I'm going to work on a mini Hoth game tonight! What do you use for the ground? My favourite is the tavern, simple but effective and fun.
-
Superb thread. :-* :-*
I´m loving these ideas.
Keep it coming.
-
I've trying to figure another creative way of doing something like this. Think I figured one out. Remember some years ago somebody made a game with all models on magmatic stands, played on a ball painted with magnetic paint? I figure you could do that with the ball being the storage container. GZG moongrut models might be cool, but plastics might be smarter to use.
-
Sounds like a wierd idea....:)
Okay, here is an old one, I made last year.
A small dungeon that fits in a perry box (ap. 6x8cm).
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/d1_zpsl2ggzf9y.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/d1_zpsl2ggzf9y.jpg.html)
The orcs in this dungeon are old snootlings from GW.
Don't know where the demonis from. The advenuress is from grenadier...
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/d2_zps8uerckkp.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/d2_zps8uerckkp.jpg.html)
And everything cramed in the box...;)
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/d3_zpsmw8qfnit.jpg) (http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/d3_zpsmw8qfnit.jpg.html)
Should do something with the box cover...
Cheers,
Don
-
You could do a nice entrance doorway on the cover, stand it up for play and it looks nice and inviting on the box.
-
This thread is just amazing, so many cool ideias
-
fantastic - very interesting ideas :-*
-
This is an incredible thread. thanks for sharing!
-
I'd like to see something similar, but with Pendraken's 10mm fantasy range. The whole of Hero Quest could be replicated and fit into a small box :)
-
Thanx, gents....;)
I am into something new, but not finished yet...so my first WIP here.
I thought of somnething really small and smashed a little greenstuff together...;)
2mm ACW.
(http://i928.photobucket.com/albums/ad126/DonVoss_photos/small_zpshb40s4nm.jpg) (http://'http://s928.photobucket.com/user/DonVoss_photos/media/small_zpshb40s4nm.jpg.html')
Flags are printed on paper...
Cheers,
Don
-
I want to see Gettysburg on your thumbnail ;-)
Great approach!
-
that's so small it's crossed the line from fun to looking like a delicious cake decoration! lol
-
Imagine seeing two middle-aged gentlemen playing this game on a large table, in the middle of which lies a terrain board the size of a sheet of A4 paper, and the two men use toothpicks to move their units around lol
-
