This is a project I have fancied doing for a long time but I have decided to get on with it. But don't expect quick updates it will be a slow burning project.
Anyway on to the idea
The Clan Maclachlan jointed the Jacobite Rebellion just before they took Edinburgh. Depending on your source they numbered somewhere in the region of between 150 and several hundred clansmen. Maclachlan's were to take some of the senior positions in the princes army including the army commissariat and one of his aide de camps who died on Culloden moor trying to deliver the order to advance. The chief of the Maclachlans' was also amongst the casualties of the battle. After the battle the government forces carried out the"highland pacification" basically just killed everything that moved, burned all the houses and stole all the livestock. It was sometime during the pacification that a British navy ship sailed up Loch Fyne and helped the Campbell Militia to destroy old castle Lachlan the clan seat of the Maclachlans.
The idea for the game is to build the castle and the village around it we have some suitable terrain boards but will need to add a couple more to make up the bay at the end of Strathlachlan. All the buildings will be scratch built. Have got some suitable clansmen from Front Rank that can also be used for the Campbell militia. Will get some Redcoats from Front Rank as well.

Brilliant idea, mate.
Very apt, you must have so many ideas of things to recreate from that period.
This could take forever to accomplish to your satisfaction.

I agree with most of what he said, but in English!

Looking forward to see the updates for this project for i also have some highlanders to do something similar at a long time.
I´m very curious about painting tartans. :)
Great start. :-* :-*

Oh no, another person making little buildings out of little foam bricks*. Best of luck with the build sir. :)
And I shall grab my comfy armchair, and settle in for the pretty pictures.
*there must be something in the water up there.

-
You should take this to either (or both) Carronade / Claymore as I am sure it will be a visual treat
-
Rather looking forward to seeing this one progress and good to see you using individual bricks :D
Brilliant ! A great idea Colon, looking for ad to seeing this develop. :-*

Red wine + Port + no reading glasses + iPad spellchecker do not work. :(
Sorry Colin. :)
-
Actually Colin (or Colon if you prefer) is Maclachlan just a namesake or is there some connection there?
cheers
James

My name is "Colin Donald Maclachlan" so there is a connection hence my interest in this bit of history

You're going to need to find someone called Campbell to lead the turncoat baddies ;)
-
I was thinking about some English soldiers so I may be able to find someone to play them. I am also wondering if I can fit in some German/Hessian troops?
-
In 1746 England had mercenaries from Hannover and also Hessians(Kassel). They fought in Scotland and England. So, you can use them.
-
Excellent looking project, I'll be watching this with interest!
I have to admit I'm a big fan of the Front Rank Jacobites, far superior to the Warlord ECW offerings IMHO...
-
Excellent start
Colon Colin. Thanks for the bit of history as well! ;)
Thatched roof for the cottage? How are you going to go about that? BTW thinking on it....would a dedicated board not be better as opposed to using our existing stuff?
-
Great stuff Colin. Do you want a clan Maclachlan flag?
-

Not sure I have the space for more boards

Rob Roy the Highland Rogue
The first one is the one with the irish actor playing a scot with a funny accent? Never seen or heard of the second one
-
Yes for the first one. lol
The second one is worth seen although its a disney film.
I think you can find it on youtube. Good to take some ideas.

Bump.

For all the issues of casting with "the first one", (you're forgetting the ginger American aswell...) it's still one of the best films of the period, and for my money the final sword fight between Rob and Archibald is one of, if not the, best ever committed to film.
Alternatives? The Michael Caine version of Kidnapped for sheer comedy value, though Caine does have something of the appropriate swagger for Alan Breac; and the rather cringeworthy Chasing the Deer (AKA Culloden 1746) with BRIAN BLESSED ("Charlie's aliiiiive!?"). However, for something with rather more impact, Peter Watkins' Culloden is still pretty powerful; My favourite scene is probably just prior to the battle, and the men in the Highland line are reciting their heritage and giving their reasons for being there, ranging from lifelong service to the chief's dynasty ("I am here because Machuilish is here, and it is an honour to serve on the field with my chief, as my father served his father, and his father before him" to the rather more practical "I am Dougal MacDonald, and I am here because a Campbell killed my cow...") Brings a tear to the eye and a lump to the throat, and that's from someone not daft enough to get sucked into the shortbread-tin-and-tourist-tat, rose-tinted perception of the campaign...
Great stuff Colin. Do you want a clan Maclachlan flag?
Still think this range needs expanding... I'm in for at least one 28mm Robertson one and one in 15mm too... :D
Similar to this-
(http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd206/141N/robertson%20banner%201_zps97zwmhsm.jpg)
though I suspect the Chief's motto "Virtutis Gloria Merces" ("Glory is the reward of Valour") should be on the banner, rather than "Ghargh na dusair", which is the slogan (war cry), translating as "Fierce when roused"... (I did see something fitting that descriprion for 10mm ECW, but I forget the manufacturer...)
I leave you (until the next update...) with this...

The croft of an ordinary highland crofter of the C17th wouldn't have glass in the windows, would it?

Who cares anyway. ;) The building is going to look superb whatever the windows look like ;D

I've got the Highland Folk Museum on my list of 'places to visit when next in Scotland'. If you don't know it, it might offer inspiration (though presently closed for the winter).

Well there was the window tax:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_tax
And glass tax:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_tax
And about use of glass in Scotland:
Before the 17th century, glass was very expensive to produce, and could only be obtained in small panes which were set in lead. Decorative stained glass was used in this way in churches. By the end of the 17th century, larger pane sizes could be produced and timber sash and case windows were being used in prestigious domestic buildings. Timber glazing bars or ‘astragals’ allowed a number of panes of glass to be used in a single sash.
These types of window became predominant in all sorts of buildings throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Much of
the glass of this period was produced by spinning the molten glass to form thin sheets (crown glass), or by forming cylinders that were later flattened (cylinder or broad glass). The results of the spinning action or flattening of the cylinder often created irregularities in the glass that gave each type its own distinctive appearance.
The above (lots more also) is from here:
http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/windows.pdf
-
On glass:
Yes. I said C17th, but meant 1700s, i.e. C18th. Even then, the Highlands were still not only near the end of the world, but still pretty 'backward', so to speak. Or should I say 'developing': you know, the Marxist-Hegelian theory of thesis-antithesis-synthesis.
...OK. I'll stop now.
-
Yes, I concur with you that glass windows must have been a rare luxury item back then. Same thing over here in Finland, heck, some of the castles got their own glass masters in 16th century, must have taken couple of hundred years more that an average person got glass windows for his hovel :)
-
My lot must have stolen some glass from Edinburgh.
Some more progress

And some progress on my first clansman, the 2' rule will apply with these figures

My lot must have stolen some glass from Edinburgh.
And that's why the Englishmen appear to kick few doors down :D
House will look great when finished. And keen to see few minis finished as well.
-
That's starting to look really good. The stone thing is starting to look easy...
-
Wonderful Build Colin, it's really coming together. :)
-
That's starting to look really good. The stone thing is starting to look easy...
Thanks I think o_o
-
Very nice. :-* :-*
Keep it coming.
-
WOW! :o the buildings cracking! I love the details of the ropes with the rocks weighing down!
One minor point though(and this is more a personal thing) would you not be better rounding off the base? It's just, straight lines hardly appear in nature, unless manmade.
-
Nice stockings! (You'll go blind)
The croft looks great.
I'm not sure it would have had glass back then though.
;)
lol
-
Nice stockings! (You'll go blind) too late
The croft looks great.
I'm not sure it would have had glass back then though. what would it have been stretched raw hide?
;)
lol

This is all coming along very nicely.
I like the weighted roof idea.

Sorry don't know anything about trees
I was just going to use model ones
-
Glass or no glass, -and I thought wargamers were sticklers for historically accurate detail- the model has oodles of character
-
More or less finished

Hope the trees are OK

Oh that is cracking! :o 8) :-*
Sorry i felt need to clarify my statement earlier! I might have been wrong (and late!!!). This is what i had had in mind (useless now mind you!)

Jolly nice!

The stone colour is spot on as well :)
cheers
James
-
That's barry! :)
-
Bang on, mate.
Bang on.
8) 8)
-
Excellent stuff Colin. What is that you have used for the bricks?
-
Some foam I got from Andrew same as the pink stuff only grey in colour
-
So you just cut it up. Nice :)
-
I presume you mean "just cut it up" yes cut it into little rectangles and rolled them together between my hands to take away the sharp edges. Also pressed a rough stone into some to improve the texture
-
Great work. Ill need to give it a try if i ever get some time :)
-
And another movie to get some ideas.
"The Master of Balantrae".
Richard any ideas about the main actress? ::)
-
To quote A.P... "I love this bloody house!". I'm sure it could get plenty of use elsewhere too.
Yes, I concur with you that glass windows must have been a rare luxury item back then. Same thing over here in Finland, heck, some of the castles got their own glass masters in 16th century, must have taken couple of hundred years more that an average person got glass windows for his hovel :)
What form would the windows have taken if not glazed, or would there even have been windows? I'd love to find a good source on the history/archaeology of these structures, but don't want to hijack the thread. If anyone has some please PM!
-
Zaheer search for details on the black houses on Lewis. They have some quite in depth descriptions as well as pictures of the ones they have there. They don't have windows to keep the heat in.
-
One of the book I read about this period had a description by an English traveller of the type of houses, amd from his description I don't think they had windows but I like the extra detail it adds to the build so mine have glass. Surely people that can male steel weapons can work out how to make bottle bottom glass pains
-

Agreed mate. It makes them look better for gaming imo and it means you can also shoot out of them or throw burning torches into them.

They look splendid Colin, Jeffs paint job and the lovely flag set them off a treat. ;D
I minor observation, do you intend to colour in the edges of the flag where it is joined together?
I always think running a little paint across the white edge colouring it in to blend with the existing colours really finishes the flags off. :)
-
Sorry forgot the first two pictures were taken before I painted the edges ;D
The third picture has painted edges

I am after some suggestions for rules for this game. Small skirmish with maybe 20 a side?
-
In Aprils WI there's a Napoleonic version of Lion Rampant which might do.
-
What about Donnybrook?
I've never played it, so don't know much about it, but it seems to be very popular.
-
Sharp Practice? There is a 2nd version in testing just now too.
Muskets and Tomahawks would work too and a really good set of rules. The Jacobites could be the Natives in the rules.
-
Oh yeh, I forgot about Donnybrook. I've got a copy and played it loads of times, it would be ideal.
-
Sharp practice are from two fat lardies, yes???
Who supplies donnybrook?
-
Sharp practice are from two fat lardies, yes???
Who supplies donnybrook?
Yeah two fat lardies for SP. I have Donny Brook that i can bring on Sat to prestonpans if you want a quick read. Barry Hilton will have his LoA stall at the show as well and will be selling the rules if you wanted them.
Personally i found them rather brutal with a high chance to kill. I did only have a very quick game.
-
That would be great Iain
See you tomorrow then?
-
I would plump for Muskets & Tomahawks and make the clansmen Indians - very brittle, small unit sizes but deadly in hand to hand
-
slowly managing to keep this up
a second highlander may have to hurry up a bit

Just something to add to my brothers Autumn set up. The other week we were at the Model Rail Scotland show. I picked up a load of stuff to make the Autumn stuff a bit more real. I always wanted to try using sea moss trees.

LB
-
Lovely, mate.
Very autumnal indeed.
:-* :-*
-
Beautiful pieces of scenery, so realistic :-*
-
The seamoss/foam/whatever trees look great. Very birch like in fact and so perfect for the highlands. Why don't you try giving the "trunk" a bit of a whitish highlight and adding some green leaves. The look fine as it is of course!!!
How durable are they?
-
They're great Andy. They remind me of the terrain around Killiecrankie. You kept this lot quiet!

I agree, I drives me nuts. I sort of regret that I manned my Jazz Age NWF expedition with Gordon Highlanders. Fortunately they wear buff aprons.
-
This really looks the part. But are those trees not as fragile as an erection in a cold shower?
-
Most skyscrapers handle a winter storm with ease.
Oh, you're not talking about buildings are you?

Good idea! Might do.
The trees are tougher than I thought. Don't get me wrong, they won't survive someone slapping their hand straight down on top, but they don't just snap at the slightest bend either. I wonder if doing a coat of superglue up the trunk might make it even sturdier. ???
This really looks the part. But are those trees not as fragile as an erection in a cold shower?
That's got to be the best metaphor I've ever heard! lol
Cheers guys!

Much respect for doing it.

Great work Andy :)

Very well done. :-* :-* :-*
Keep it coming.

Great painting!
I cant help but think that if I gave that windswept little tart a red hairdo, my wife could use him as Jaime from Outlander. so I could both rope her into a game, and taunt him with threats of abuse and unmanliness. ;)
-
Very nice. Just re-read the whole thread and it looks fantastic. Great work on the tartan. Am looking forwrad to playing this at BLAM.

Ha ha not sure about the kilt but it is a good idea to carry about the sword and shield where I live
Anyway its still better than shorts with ribbons on your hat and a little stick with bells on it, I know
what I would rather be wearing and carrying if it came to a fight
-
Looking good. You're tartan paintwork is a lot better than mine! I did read that you may bring these to BLAM, didn't I?

This is the clan battle standard which was burnt in Edinburgh after Culloden by the English so as my idea for my game is set after that I will need second a second standard

Hadn't seen this project! Wonderful stuff, great choice as well, Highlanders, Redcoats, the romance of Bonnie Prince Charlie...its got it all.
Fantastic scenery. I may steal that cow house idea if I ever get my Border Reivers project going.
-
Inspiring, so much so I have 80 highlanders in the lead pile for sharp practice 2 now😜
-
Nice build. I particularly like the roof.
-
Great additions. :-* :-*
I love that barn.
-
I am still trying to progress this project
I showed some pictures before of the castle. When we set out the table a couple of weeks ago we decided that the castle was way too big so I had to cut it down, I had finished three and a half walls :'(
So after another couple of weeks I have this, just the ground work to do and the entrance ramp up to the door.

Battlements and roof

For a castle built on the side of a mountain its lovely ;D
-
:-* love that roof Colin! There's some amount of work in that but it'll be a cracking piece on the table. Is it for BLAM?
-
That looks amazing, Colin!
:-* :-*
It really does remind me of something from the Tabletop World catalogue with all that depth to the stonework.

All one colour grey or a mixture of greys and browns ;)

All one colour grey or a mixture of greys and browns ;)
lol
Well, flags_of_war posted this example on another thread and I reckon that should be just the right impression given it's location....
If you need to see good stone colours for a period house this is the one that i have been using as a ref, when planning to build my own Fortified Manor.
It's Provanhall House in Glasgow.
But you probably know this place, dont you?
;)
-
All one colour grey or a mixture of greys and browns ;)
Oh no...
Here we go again...
::)
;)
-
I don't think I have time to do the real colour
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/25/1912_17_09_16_11_55_45.png)
it takes a couple of hundred years to achieve that colour of stone. The pink in the above picture is the colour of the fresh cut stone the other colours are the same stone after hundreds of years of weathering.
So the question is what colours do you use on a model?
-
Usually an abstraction of reality works best at the reduced scale, just presenting an effect rather than a copy. I'd be tempted to do a main brown with a secondary tone to break it up and then a third tone for picking out the odd stone.
-
When it comes to damp mountainous places I'm always for the stern grey of granite.
-
So the question is what colours do you use on a model?
lol
Go with your heart and be damned what the others say ;) lol

If you look at this wall made from stones of the Rhine, you can see that it's all one colour:

We've been rumbled lol

The pink in the above picture is the colour of the fresh cut stone the other colours are the same stone after hundreds of years of weathering.
Dare ya to do it pink!
:D :D
-
Black drybrushed grey ;D
Lovely build by the way 8) 8)
Seriously though, with regard to the stone colour, if you have some browns/tans/grey spray paints then give a few areas a quick blast form a distance to give a tonal 'speckle' effect nd then go over with the dry brushing, washes etc. Works a treat :)
cheers
James

Well I have added some colour what do you think?

Fantastic Colin! :o That looks brilliant! :-*

Excellent build. The tower somehow also reminds me of the first Highlander movie. I could totally see Macleod, Ramirez and the Kurgan fighting there.

Don't do that to me
You mean the crap film where the French guy fights the mad max extra and the only scot in the main cast plays a spaniard :o
Please don't mention that in the same breath as the word Scottish

Yeah, very nice. I imagine it's not really words, but more of a Scottish Haiku.

Andy are you doing them as Highland Militia for the British? The Campbells fought on the side of the British Forces. They had men fight at Culloden.

Very nice. It does even look like the Campbell tartan. Good work 8)

Really great looking models. This is definitely on my todoo list for the weekend.

Thanks Keith, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks to everyone who played and made our game soo enjoyable. Each game turned out completely different, with the Scots eventually winning 2 games to 1 against the English.
Here's some of our game pics.
Board set up....

The Scots are trying to defend Castle Lachlan from the English, who are trying to blow it up in retribution for the Maclachlans participation in the battle of Culloden. The Scots start around the base of the castle while the English are split into two, distinct units, the land forces and the Navy. The Navy, having been on assignment fighting elsewhere, have ran out of cannon balls but still have powder. The English land forces, consisting of a unit of English soldiers and 2 small units of Hessain allies are to secure the area around the castle to allow the Navy to land and set the powder and blow the castle to dust!

In one game the Scots got reinforcements, which turned out to be a herd of highland cattle! lol
Again, many thanks to all who played and made it such an enjoyable game to run!
-
This was a stunning game. Castle Lachlan had to be seen to fully appreciate its size and quality, it was an absolutely brilliant piece of work.
-
This was truly a wonder to behold (unfortunately the timings of games meant I missed the chance to play.... :'(), with Castle Lachlan really taking pride of place on a wonderful board. It really is a wonderful build and finished off to perfection.
:-* :-*
-
Finished off !!!
Did someone else finish the board when I wasn't looking. Still loads of things to do
Great photos Andrew
Has anyone got any other good photos. Mine were crap

The game looked specatacular, everything about it was spot on. ;D
Sorry I missed the opportunity to play though :'(

It was spectacular and a great game as well. Well done.
-
A great table that I was lucky enough to play on. The tower and buildings were excellent and the whole feel of the table was autumnal, very different from the usual 'green and pleasant land' that we all have a tendency to depict on the table-top
Sadly my luck didn't extend to the actual game. My Sergeant fleeing the field before I had even moved was a sign of things to come. James didn't fare any better.
The historical participants had the right idea....Don't get off the boat. ;)
-
James didn't fare any better.
Nothing new there then....
;D
(To be fair, I think James gets the worst luck where dice are concerned that I have ever seen....)

I'm afraid the Scottish Targe was a pain the arse. I think if it was an open battlefield, with your muskets firing at range, clan Maclachlan would have been gunned down. But the closeness of the buildings and trees, and the fact that the targe used an ability check to save as opposed to a normal save made them too good!
I seem to remember James' rolls being that bad, one of his guys blew himself up! :o

Yep. I'll try to do a blow by blow photo report of the first game, but time is short this week. Might get a chance tonight. Plenty of photos, so I'll add it to this thread if that's okay? :)

I missed to play the game, but I saw it when Grimm did. Great Table, great game. Hopefully next year again, Collin?
-
Congrats to you and Andy on a cracking little game Colin with spectacular terrain. Loved playing it even if Niall's Highlanders made short work of my Brits and Hessians, I just cannot believe how crap my dice rolling was, I mean six goes at rolling a six to blow the flipping castle up and failing every time lol
Ah well at least I knocked out the Chieftain, even if he was outnumbered 12-1 lol.
-
Okay, here you go... :)
1745. After Culloden.
Castle Lachlan, ancestral seat of Clan MacLachlan, on the bonny bonny banks of Loch Fyne.
The remnants of the clan, battered but unbowed, have gathered to defend their castle from the vengeful, despoiling English, intent on ‘slighting’ the stately pile by packing it with gunpowder and blowing the top off.
An English Man O’War loaded with powder has sailed up the loch for precisely this purpose. And English redcoats and their Hessian lapdogs are marching down from the hills to secure the shoreline and neigbouring village…
Having watched and admired this thread from start to finish, it was a huge pleasure to play in Colin and Andy’s game, to snap a few piccies, and be able to write up a battle report.
The attention to detail on the tabletop was well up to the usual painstaking Clan MacLachlan standard - the pictures really don’t do it justice. It was even better in the flesh. A wonderful creative undertaking, handmade from scratch.
The rules were Donnybrook – a set I had long wanted to play, because I’d heard so many good things about them.
This was the first of three games on the day. Each game was for four players and took around two hours to play through. On this occasion, Dr De’ath and I played the perfidious English, while the Scots were played by Dr the Viking and Dr Zombie, AKA the Danish Doctors. (According to them, because Scotland is really part of Scandinavia… lol)
Anyway, on with the batrep. (Or what I believe is now compulsorily termed by the cool kids an ‘AAR’ – pause for vomiting).
Behold the sleepy shores of fair Strathlachlan along the Eastern bank of beautiful Loch Fyne, home to the best kippers in the North.
But wait, what is this? The unwelcome tramp of tyrannical Hanoverian boots splashing through the ford across the rushing burn, marching on Castle Lachlan, hellbent on murder and destruction…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_06_08_1.JPG)
The MacLachlan captain hastily sends out half his force – a small body of renegade Campbells who have somehow attached to the Jacobite cause – to outflank the English as they march down the dusty road to Castle Lachlan…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_06_09_2.JPG)
Meanwhile, hard by the castle, the MacLachlans rally under their battle standard...
Then set out for the hills – ready to greet the English with shot and steel as they approach down the road…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_06_09_4.JPG)
The first elements of the Hanoverian force are already across the ford. The MacLachlans had better hurry…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_08_47_0.JPG)
But rather than marching down the road into the teeth of the MacLachlan reception committee waiting for them beneath the hill, the perfidious English veer off and attempt to outflank their outflankers by marching around the village… Meanwhile, the English Man O’War stands off the shoreline and lowers a boat…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_08_47_1.JPG)
Blithely disregarding the looming threat out on the loch, Clan MacLachlan continue to march resolutely in the opposite direction – to face an English force which is clealry not coming. Or at least not arriving by the appointed route! The English and Hessian captains exchange a knowing glance, and give silent thanks for Danish-Scotsmen…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_08_47_2.JPG)
Meanwhile, the Campbells settle in behind a dry stone wall to lie in wait for the advancing redcoats.
The ship’s boat, laden with casks of powder puts out for the shore…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_08_47_4.JPG)
Spotting it, some of the Campbells turn and discharge a few hopeful long-distance musket balls towards the boat out on the loch. At this point a random event (presumably a spark from a flintlock) sets the thatched roof of one of the crofts on fire… Black smoke begins to billow ominously…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_11_07_0.JPG)
Peppered by whizzing musket balls, the gallant bluejackets pull bravely for the beach.
Unwilling to walk into an ambush, the redcoats rush around the burning croft in the opposite direction, their Hessian allies pressing in close behind them.
The English summon their tough Hessian grenadiers to the fore - and the Campbells rush forward to meet them. The Germans get stuck in, inflicting immediate casualties on the Scots.
The Hessian captain is stunned in the melee however – a basket-hilted broadsword to the face, perhaps. Down he goes, and the Hessian grenadiers – not so tough after all, when up against Highlanders with targes – are variously wounded, killed and thrown back. Forcing the redcoats to rush in and encircle the Campbells... (Note the McLachlans still waiting behind their wall, vainly hoping the English are going to march down the road to be shot to pieces...
Now a small wrinkle in the otherwise admirable rules becomes apparent… Targes make it very hard to kill a character so armed. Six redcoats with fixed bayonets gang up on just two clansmen, with a three to one advantage in each case - and not a scratch is inflicted. The targe defence appears invulnerable. (Or maybe it was just rubbish dice-throwing on the part of the English…) Anyway, back to the game…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_14_21_0.JPG)
The English boat, despite having lost a couple of sailors to musket fire, has made the beach… The powder is offloaded and hauled up towards the castle.

Just in the nick of time, like Nazgul wheeling to fly screaming back to Mordor, the MacLachlans perceive their peril and come racing back from the lee of the hill to drive off the invaders. But will they make it in time?

Meanwhile, on the other side of the village - upstream from a very fetching waterfall - English reinforcements begin crossing the burn…

...Whilst their compatriots, tiring of trying to bayonet their way through titanium targes, step back from the fight and discharge their muskets into the clansmen at point blank range.

This cowardly but frankly effective tactic greatly reduces the resistance. The English captain steps in and bayonets the Campell captain as he lies stunned on the ground. He has to do this twice to make sure of him. Undeterred by this grievous loss, the last few ferocious highlanders charge the redcoats and fling them back. Unfortunately this just means the Hessians can step in and polish off the remaining Scots.

Meanwhile, the navy has decided discretion is the better part of valour. They hastily reload their casks of powder onto the boat, and push off from the shore. The MacLachlan captain stands atop the cliff and roars furiously at the departing English sailors, discharging his pistol, and offering to jump into the boat tweny feet below and several yards offshore – a would-be glorious act of rank stupidity that the umpire wisely rules out of court.

But what is this? Around the corner of Castle Lachlan, a seething herd of highland cattle is driven. What cunning Caledonian ploy is this? Are they to be launched at the boat, like hairy, horned cruise missiles?
The MacLachlans urge their chief to leave the jack tars be, and come back to defend the front door of the castle.

Because the Hanoverians have finally polished off the last of the valiant (and surprisingly resilient) Campbells, and are about to turn their attentions to the defenders of Castle Lachlan…

The last defenders of Castle Lachlan with scenic highland cattle…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_21_16_0.JPG)
While the Hessians reform a firing line to begin the frontal assault on the castle, the 33rd Foot are despatched along the road to open a second front…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_21_16_1.JPG)
The wily Scots drive the highland cattle herd towards the Hessian line…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_21_17_2.JPG)
Unfortunately, this simply results in a couple of volleys of musketry and a huge pile of dead cows…
However, with the Hessians now unloaded, the MacLachlans seize their chance and surge out from behind their defensive wall, determined to come to grips with the hateful German mercenaries before they can reload…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_21_17_3.JPG)
Meanwhile, the redcoats march on the now undefended castle…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_21_17_4.JPG)
Closer they come and closer... The crunch of approaching tyranny...
And suddenly it’s all over.
The last heroic charge of the MacLachlans is thwarted by the fall of the cards. Turns get stopped suddenly (yes, it's another bloody set of rules with a stupid bloody 'Tiffin' card).
The Hessians get to reload. The dice go their way. The cards go their way. The Scots are decimated by efficient German musketry, and the last of the clan flee ingominiously from the field in an unrecoverable rout…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/26/577_13_10_16_4_28_47_1.JPG)
As the ship’s boat turns lazily upon the loch and noses back towards the shore, the Hessians are left facing one solitary cow and a couple of drovers.

A solitary piper plays a lament. Castle Lachlan has fallen and will be destroyed.
And it was, in history – and is still there today, as romantic a set of ruins as any in Scandinavia Scotland

Pretty fucking incredible, eh?
A brilliantly devised and wonderfully realised setting, story and game. Thanks to the gallant brothers MacLachlan.
These Jacobites got all the way to Derby and kept on going to Surbiton!
Didn’t see the other two games I’m afraid, as I was busy playing other tables, but I understand they all turned out quite differently. Which is nice, I think :)

Brilliant report and piccies, sir!

Sounds like a great game (gutted I did not get a chance to play, but you cant pley 'em all, can ya?).
The table was amazing to gawp at, though, as many of us did, even if we did not get a game in.
That castle being one of my favourite builds on here this year, it is so nice.

Very well done report. There was a sizeable queue to play this and still plenty of people willing to play (myself included) so it's nice to hear how a game went.
