Title: shooting in close combat

When in base to base contact with an opponents model if my model has a pistol and decides to use it, when does he use it? during the shooting phase or fighting phase?

Shooting phase. But don't forget speed as it affects shooting in close combat.

It is why pistols are so valuable. Captain Napier never goes into combat without his trusty revolver :)
