This was an interesting surprise. Of all wars, please tell us why you choose this one...

Funny enough I have just converted some Swedes in the m/1779 from AWI and SYW. miniatures. I need some guards to play a skirmish game around the murder of Gustav III in 1792. Now I can stop converting  ;)

these are really great. A wargames battle between Russians and Turkish troops would give a great spectacle

And a great "what if" early French revolution addition

Pretty close to my all time favourite uniforms. Very tempting and a subject long neglected in this scale. Good for fighting Ottomans and Poles too.

Does anyone know if the 6 figures in the packs being sold by North Star are all the same or is there some variation?

It looks to me that the three figures shown in the infantry packs are the same or am I missing some variations?

Amazing sculpts as always from GWM. Really excited about this range as I have always had an interest in the later Russo-Swedish wars contemporary with the Napoleonic period.

I would just be after knowing which units were engaged in the battles of 1788 - 1790 as I have been unable to find this out so far.

All very interesting stuff- I love the more esoteric areas of our hobby and dearly wish that I had time to paint up an army or two from this beautiful looking range- though I do have to admit that I had to look it up before I knew anything about the war! My ignorance shining through I suppose :)

I found a couple of more Russian flag images...

This one appears to have a white field... so possibly a colonels flag...

The symbol on the eagles chest is different from the previous image... I think this was different for each regiment.

I know Lars Rossle of Sword and Sabre Publishing used to have a web site that covered the Russian Army of this period but sadly it appears to have been taken down...  :'(

I have not seen any Nafziger OOB from this war, however the Swedish side is rather well documented and available in Swedish on the Runeberg.org website, for example:

http://runeberg.org/mjfinarme/1/

In the Swedish documents there are mentioned about Russian troop strength and unit types but not distinct regimental OOBs

If you want to know more about Russian colours through the ages, then get hold of the coloured work by Zweguintzow.
Cuprum can get it for you, if you is not able to find it or buy from Russia.

Unfortunately the pics have gone, but Lars Rossle's sadly vanished site said two colours for the Russians in this period:

https://web.archive.org/web/20100817162329/http://hem.bredband.net/b111807/English/Eng-gustavian/Russians-1.htm

I think a lot of the uniform pictures he made for the Swedish army are still viewable through the wayback machine, if anyone's interested.

I think (but I'm not sure) that from 1780, there were only two types of flags for all the russian regiments (musketeers and grenadiers). The white regiemental flag and the coloured flag (same design but with yellow and white).

The coloured pictures that don't appear in the usefull Lars Rossle web can be found here (with the pages indicated).

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ysvrzbe2w3ss4wn/Ylianov_01_unlock.pdf?dl=0

In the front cover of the book, a grenadier battalion with 2 identical flags is depicted.

The text in page 192 translated with google translator (my russian is awful  ;)) says:

Colored banners Infantry Regiments , 1763-1780 , by divisions : the Estonian ( 1 ) , Ukrainian and Sevsk , 1766 ( 2 ) , Livonia ( 3 ) , Smolensk ( 4 ) , St. Petersburg ( 5 ) , Finland ( 6 ) , Siberian housing ( 7 ) , Moscow ( 8 ) Sevsk , until 1766 ( 9 ) , Ukrainian , until 1766 ( 10 ) , Orenburg housing ( 11 ) . The front ( 12 ) and back ( 13 ) side of the colored banners grenadier and infantry regiments , sample 1780 .

So I assume that specific coloured flags disapeared in 1780 when a new flag was issued for all line infantry. All the same excepte for the city coat d'arms on the eagle's chest. As it says "coloured infantry flags", I'll use a white flag and coloured flag for the first battalion in aregiment and two coloured flags for other battalions in same regiment.

Thank you Oriol...
you beat me to it...

I think your assumptions make the most sense.
I shall also go with a colonels flag with a white field and a battalion flag with an orange/white field.
I wouldn't be surprised if some units continued to carry the older flags as it often took time for changes to make their presence felt.

I shall ask Nick to put two standard bearers in the Russian unit packs.

Here is a descent image of page 192.

All the best  Aly

I saw that there was not much info on the battle of Walkiala April 29 1790, which was.....no problem.... :D since I am putting together some facts on that. I just need to download a map from the War Archive to finish.

Very nice. there's something rather charmingly 'old school' about those figures. The slightly washed out pic only adds to it.

Hi Aly,

very nice! Which colour (maker) did you use for the blue uniform? Also, are you planning light Infantry like the savolax jaeger?

Greetings,

Martin

As this battle was not part of the great works of Lars Rössle I translated the text from Mankell´s description of the battle. I had some problems with the images though...I do not understand why they are not as good resolution as the originals?

Battle of Walkiala April 29, 1790

The Swedish advance towards Walkiala continue through Selänpää to the bridge at Terasjoki which had been destroyed by the Russians. The bridge was repaired protected by two artillery batteries. Further on at Antilla village The Elfsborg Infantry battalion was deployed together with 2 guns. It was now 17.30 in the afternoon and reports came with news about enemy activity in Walkiala. The Russian Commander Major General Denisow had formed his troops in the wooded ridge northeast of Walkiala with his left flank anchored on the church and Ritala village, while the right flank was protected by a small frozen swamp (Vähälampi). In front of his position was open fields and the road turning south. The Russian line, well supplied with artillery, stretched from north to south about 1000 meter. The Swedish king Gustav III asked his soldiers if they preferred to rest during the night or to attack immediately. The response was that they were eager to do the latter and the Swedish forces were prepared to advance. The terrain forced the Swedes to advance in a narrow column on the road. The Kronoberg Regiment was in the van followed by the Västmanland and Östgöta Regiments. The Swedish 6 pounder artillery took a position at the Ottari farm and started to fire at the Russian line, around 1000 meters away. The two batallions of the Kronoberg Regiment deployed in the wooded terrain to the left of the road while suffering heavy fire from the Russian line. The Russian right flank now started to move against the Swedes. To counter this move the 2nd Östgöta Batallion together with the Jägers under Hjerta (Jämtland Jäger Batallion?) was detached and advanced towards the swamp on the Russian right flank. At the same time 7 Regimental guns were deployed in line with the infantry to the left of the road. On the extreme Swedish left the Västmanland 1st Batallion deployed. Major General Pauli commanded the Swedish left. On the Swedish right flank Major General Pollet brought up the 1st Östgöta Batallion beside the Kronoberg Regiment and the 2nd Västmanland Batallion. When the Swedish deployment was finalized under heavy Russian fire, the Russians started to withdraw their guns from the line. The Swedes then commanded “fix bayonets” and the whole Swedish line advanced and made a bayonet charge capturing the Russian position on the ridge, while the Russians retreated. It was now 22.00 and darkness prohibited any pursuit of the Russians. Total losses on both sides were 170 men and the Swedes captured the plentiful Russian supplies.

Swedish Forces under Gustav III (around 2500 men)
Kronoberg Regiment (2 Bat)
Västmanland Regiment (2 Bat)
Östgöta Regiment (2 Bat)
Hjertas (earlier Armfelts) Jäger Bat (1 Bat)

Hi Traveller..

Thank you for posting The Battle of Walkiala...
For me it is just the right size for gaming... I only have a 5' x 7' table so 6-8 battalions a side is perfect

All the best   Aly

I agree that it is the right size of battle. It also have some GNW flavour, Swedes deploying under heavy fire and then delivering a bayonet charge that send the Russkies on the run. Gustav III really admired Charles XII so I am sure he was happy about the outcome of this battle which he personally commanded. Now Aly, You just need to help us with some bayonet charging miniature Swedes  :)

Hi Aly,
Any updates on more figures for this range, you had previously stated that you where working on cavalry. With Sharp Practice 2 having been released would like to see some advancing figures for skirmishes.

Hi Sovorov...

Things are moving along slowly ( work and life keep getting in the way)... but I have finished converting up masters to make summer dress and leib grenadier variants, the cavalry dollies are more or less done and I have some officer variants on the go...
I want to get a reasonable amount finished before I have them molded...
Little by little... :D

All the best  Aly

Hi Ally,
Thanks for the update, all good things come to those that wait. I only have the Russian figures at the moment and these figures are simply superb. The separate arm means a lovely cleen casting.
Looking forward to the next releases liking what you stated but completely understand real life takes first priority.
