I'm starting to get some of the models from my recent kickstarter campaign painted and photographed. Here are some pics of the first Giant Toads to be completed. Painted as Fire and Ice Toads.
Ice toad clan.

And the first Toad I sculpted back in '07 and previously available from Tengu Models.

I currently working on getting the kickstarter orders processed, packed, and sent out. After that I'll be launching a new website for the company and these models along with the others from the campaign can go on general sale.
Cheers

Those look wonderfully nasty, Iain. I love the teeth on the first specimens. Excellent work with the painting as well!

Awesome sculpting and painting Iain! :-*
-
These figures just shout "BRRRRRAAAPP! RIBET!" (Which is Giant Toad for, "You human! You what's for dinner!"). :D
Excellent sculpts and excellent brushwork. Where were these back when I played Dungeons & Dragons waaaay back in my youth?! :D
-
Bah - I missed these. How can I buy a set or 2?
-
These are brilliant
-
Cheers! These will be available once the kickstarter pledges have been sent out. So towards the end of the month/ early December.
Thanks
Iain

NEXT time you make some frog skulpts.
Make some with hobbit feet sticking out of the mouth... or a hand reaching out with a mace trying to bash the frog!
-
Love them, sculpts and paintjobs both!

nice job!

Indeed, a new fantasy take on an old American classic (just swap the frog for a hobbit with a mace, and the egret for a giant Ice Toad:

I like it. lol

I've just painted (actually my second ever painted figure) your first toad. I loved painting him, he was a challenge because I'm still such a novice 😊

Great stuff! Welcome to the hobby. I can remember the second mini I painted was a Citadel Lesser Goblin way back in the early 80's. The first was also a Lesser Goblin, you got two of them in a 40p blister rather than just one normal goblin. :)
-
You're showing your age Iain! :D :D :D
-
You're showing your age Iain!
Aye no escaping it :)
Here are some pics of a few more Fire Toads. I've got one more toad, a Boss Toad, painted up in this colour scheme but he was wet with varnish so didn't make it into the pictures today.

I've made a start on getting some of the pledges posted out. Hopefully I'll have everything posted by the end of next week!

The toads are brilliant, can't wait to get mine!
Cheers

Superb sculpting and superb painting!
(I envy you...)

Love em!

Excellent models. (Your facebook page has got me humming the theme tune to that Cane Toads documentary!)
-
Mine arrived today, beautifully cast miniatures, superb models,
No one who backed this is going to be disappointed
Thanks very much Iain

I love these. Those turned out awesome. I can't decide whether I like the fire or ice paint scheme better.

Thanks for the comments! I had a couple of requests for a toad painting guide so took some WIP photos when painting the Boss Toad in fire toad colours. Here's a quick step-by-step guide.
Paints used for the skin are Vallejo Bloody Red, Hot Orange, Orange Fire and Elf Skintone for the skin.
Step One. Base the model and prime using a good aerosol primer. Then give it an even basecoat of Bloody Red.
Step Two. Once this has dried wash the whole model with a mix of black/sepia ink or paint, or use something like Army Painter Dark Tone. Once this is dry give the whole model a drybrush with Bloody Red. This will give the skin depth, shade areas like the mouth and eyes, and bring out some of the bumpy texture of the skin. (Tip: Paint the warty back area of the toad pure Bloody Red. This will give the best contrast when the warts are painted dark.)
Step Three. Start to drybrush the underside of the toad in the lighter shades. Layer the colours by starting with a 50/50 mix of Bloody Red/Hot Orange, then pure Hot Orange, followed with 50/50 Hot Orange/Orange Fire. Continue like this until you're left with pure Elf Skintone. As the mixes get lighter start to paint only areas like the feet and throat/lips. The lightest colour Elf Skintone would be used on the lips and and of the ends of the toes only.
Step Four. Paint the teeth then work on the eyes. Paint the eyeball Plague Brown and paint an interesting pupil shape in black. Add a small amount of white to the Plague Brown and paint random dots around the eye. Paint progressively lighter dots concentrating on the edge of the pupil. The end result is a toad like eye.
Final Stage. Pick out the warts with a mix of Gory Red/Royal Purple followed by Royal Purple and then some dots of Royal Purple/Black on the top of the warts. Finish off the base then varnish!

Wonderful.

A parcel arrived. I was scratching my head about what it could be and where I heard the name 'I. Colwell' before. Then I opened it and it turned out to be a box of frogs.

Lovely stuff. :) Really excellent casting.
-
A parcel arrived.
Our postie is getting increasingly nervous from me running at him with a hopeful smile everyday... o_o
Soon....soon...
-
Gutted I missed this kickstarter :'(
They look absolutely superb and thanks for the painting guide. That fire toad paint scheme could easily be adapted to other warty monsters methinks :D
-
Thanks for the comments. Problems with the Stirge casts has held up posting out a lot of the reward packages but I have the Stirges now. Barring an unforeseen calamity packages should be in the post by next week. :)
Once all the parcels are sent these will go on general sale along with the other models from the ks.
Thanks
Iain

These are great. I want more sickly things for my nurgle daemons and toads and slugs are the best for it.
What sort of price point are you going for?
-
I'm really looking forward to getting mine. I hope they don't turn out to be a mishapen heap when they arrive though as it's really hot here at the moment. Not Australia hot but still hot.
-
The postie just handed me a little square package. I guess I'll be rinsing resin tonight. :D
I couldn't help opening the package quickly and taking a peek. They look excellent! Absolutely lovely sculpting. Clean neat castings, no bubbles or other casting imperfections, they need no work to be ready for paint. Love 'em! :-*
-
I eagerly await my frogs and slugs. Back up for my Eureka frog army ;D
-
Great tips, it look a quite fast technique. Thank you very much forma sharing!

Shouldn't be too long now!
Here are some pictures of the Giant Slugs that were sculpted during the campaign. After a bit of research, and looking at all the wonderful colours slugs come in, I went for a rich brown/orange colour scheme. (Vallejo Dark Fleshtone/Beasty Brown/Orange Fire/Off White. Black was used to darken the eyestalks and paint the pupils). A few coats of gloss varnish gives a really nice slimy wet looking finish.

Poor martial artist can't seem to catch a break!
Those are some very convincing-looking slimy monstrosities. Well done.
-
Very nice.
I got my toads a couple of days ago. They look awesome. So what are you making next?
(love the skull piles too)
-
Blimey. Those are a bit too good. :-X ;D
-
Cool stuff. I love the shiny skin on the slugs. Have you considered doing that with the frogs too?
Thanks
n
-
Very realistic paintjob well done !
-
Great painting on all those slimy nasty beasties, sir!
:-* :-*
-
Astonishing! These are brilliant - and, while the gloss varnish is used to specific and tremendous effect here, it does support my thesis that all miniatures look better in gloss! ;)
-
it does support my thesis that all miniatures look better in gloss!
Couldn't agree more! Gloss varnish has an effect where it increases the perceived tonal range of paint making the darks darker and the lights brighter. I brush varnish everything and, even though I use matt, it goes through that initial glossy stage where the colours just pop!
Have you considered doing that with the frogs too?
Yes when I was gloss varnishing these I did look over at the toads and they looked a bit wrong sitting there all perfectly matt! But I'm thinking when something gets very cold it has that matt frosting and really hot coals or fire is pretty matt so maybe that's how the fire and ice toads should look. The toad eyes will get a lick of gloss though. That always has a nice effect.
So what are you making next?
I have a little selection of creatures and terrain bits in the pipeline once all the ks parcels are sent out. That'd be after the new website is launched though. :)
-
Are you sure you've sculpted them?......they look real to me! ;) I think you've just superglued slugs from your back garden onto some bases! lol
-
*shudder*
If a miniature model makes me shudder, I think this is the highest praise I can give to a sculptor and painter...
-
I painted my first of the Kickstarters mini's today, thought you might like to see it, Blackstone:
Thank you again for making these wonderful miniatures! He was an absolute joy to paint up, felt like I barely had to do anything, he almost painted himself.

I know that's a frog you've just taken a picture of.

<snip>
You are very good at keeping that frog still.
-
The trick is to drown a fat fly in booze, feed it to the frog and wait 2 minutes. You have to be quick then, because after 3 minutes it either throws up or falls asleep with a goofy expression... ;D
-

He's great. Love the brown and tan skin colour and the eye is very realistic. Did you give it a gloss varnish?
Have a few pics of the stirges from the campaign painted up. These were based with 0.8mm brass rod for flight stands singularly and in 2's, 3's and 4's. Will make moving them around a bit easier in an encounter!

Did you give it a gloss varnish?
Yup, painted the eyes in a mix of brown and (gold) metallic, adding more metallic towards the location of the pupil. The very edge of the pupil is actually a grey metallic colour. Tweaked it a bit with orange and red glazes and painted in the pupil. Finished it off with two layers of gloss varnish.
I really like the way you painted those stirges!
-
Terrific thread!
Great ideas and great painting.
-
The Stirges are cute little suckers...GREAT color choices, bases, & brushwork. VERY NICELY DONE!

Well, I cannot add anything to this praise...
-
Thanks for the comments! The stirges were painted up in 1st ed ad&d colours. Rusty red body, yellow legs and eyes and a pink proboscis!

I'm going to give this method a try. The eye is totally convincing! :)

The new website was launched recently with a little guides section. Already added was the Fire Toad guide from this thread. I'd had a few requests for an Ice Toad painting guide and finally got round to making one! For those interested read on...
Step One: Paints used are Vallejo and the colours are Night Blue, Pale Yellow, Off White, and Blue Ink for the skin. For the eyes Scrofulous Brown, Pale Yellow, and Black. After priming the model mix Night Blue and Off White to a cold pale blue and paint a base coat on the toad.
Step Two: Once the base coat is even begin to paint the underside and the legs in a progressively lighter tone. It's difficult to see in the WIP photos but adding a little pale yellow to these lighter areas works very well.
Step 3: At this stage the inside of the mouth is messy so mix up a darker blue tone and paint this in the mouth. Then the teeth can be picked out in lighter tones.
Step 4: Next use little blue ink to wash the rear of the toads legs and back. Provides a little more contrast in the blue colours.
Step 5: Continue painting the pale underside and legs of the toad in lighter colours. You can see in the picture below that the models is starting to look like my original Ice Toad.
Step 6: So far the warts have been left alone. Now paint them in a lighter colour layering up to almost pure Off White on the extreme highlights. (This stage could be done when painting the other light areas).
Stage 7: The eyes were painted in a similar way to the Fire Toad although paler this time. I used Scrofulous Brown, 50/50 Scrofulous Brown/Pale Yellow and then Pale Yellow. Once the pupils have been painted on a bit of lighter contrast can be painted on the very edge of the pupil.
All that remains is to paint the base and tidy up the base edge, matt varnish, and the model is finished.
