Great that you've included some Kite Shields in among that lot as I'm quite sure that by the Late 1100's the Norse, who must surely have kept up with the latest military technology would have used them IMHO.
Wargaming heresy I know but it's probably nearer the truth then just depicting (late) Norse with round shields.
Darrell.

Darell, the figures are a recent addition to my collection, but I didn't build or paint 'em. They're a kind of stopgap till I get round to doing my own Vikings and Saxons with Peter Pig 15 millis. I like the mix of shields and seem to recall the Osprey Vikings book had an illustration of late Norsemen with kite shields? These hairy chappies are going into battle proper tomorrow, I'll take some piccys of the action... don't think they'll be classics though with my steam powered camera!

Not really, my mate came around this afternoon and my Vikings got a right trouncing! We used a scenerio from 'one hour wargames'. Blue (me) had one unit that had crossed the river, Red (that bastard!) would enter randomly from front or flank... so I had to get my skates on to bring up the rest of the lads. My Huscarls and Thralls went galloping off for a private fight on the hill and the fields quickly filled up with baddies...

My shieldwall did great execution just north of the bridge, bringing on my usual gloating victory snigger. This proved a tad premature as both sides Chieftains pushed into the front rank to inspire their underlings and write their names tall in the subsequent Saga. It all went wrong when the wandering Huscarls got took in flank and destroyed, freeing up hordes of baddies. Outnumbered, my Chieftain and his depleted bodyguard were all hacked down in the centre, the soundly thrashed remnant of my shieldwall routing back over the old Roman bridge...
