Here's a warehouse I just finished. Every bit of this came from a single broken G-Gauge toy mail car I found at a resale shop.
The rear sliding door actually functions!

The painjtob is actually super simple, mostly because I'm pretty impatient. After I prime it black with cheap spray paint I...
-Wet-Brush of base colors (Blue-Green, Red and Silver in this case)
-A heavy brown wash or two (Just craft paint and water)
-A very light metalic drybrush in a few spots
-Dusty tan drybrush all over
The dusty tan drybrush is really the miracle that "covers a multitude of ills". In one step it softens any places where the washes were too dark, conceals where the washes missed and mellows where the metal drybrush was too heavy. It also gives a little highlight-ish effect to the edges and raised areas as well as giving everything a nice grungy look.
Then I just brush on some matte varnish for protection.
