Title: Larger Barbarian figures?
Post by: Hupp n at em on November 23, 2015, 07:21:44 PM
Hey there Fantasy Friends,  :)

I haven't been satisfied with the options that exist out there for representing Fallout SuperMutants, and since the defining characteristic (besides being green-yellow in color) is that they're tall muscley freaks, I thought that Fantasy barbarians would be the best base to work off of.  The problem is, I need them to be a fair bit taller than the average human figure, and since I have never really been into the classic ripped, minimally-clothed barbarian archetype, my knowledge of figures fitting this is minimal.  :D

TL;DR - looking for muscely barbarians, preferably minimal clothing, but definitely a head or more taller than the average 28mm human.

Not really a barbarian but I think it could be a good option:

Grenadier ( Copplestone ) Barbarians, now available from EM4 Miniatures ( UK ) and Mirliton ( Europe ). Cheap as chips and still great figs.

You might also look at Tre Manor's orc sculpts for Reaper, most of which are available as Bones cheapo figures as well.

Are they appreciably taller than 28mm?  Super muties are ~8 ft tall, so it is more the height that is hard to find than the Mr. Olympia physique.

Dang, wish I had thought to throw those on my recent Heresy Order.  Not that I mind giving Andy more money...  :D

Yeah, I had given him some thought.  I think I've seen that guy painted up by several gents over on the PA board as a supermutant.

I had really wrestled with using those as-is...but I think if I shave down the pot-bellies and sculpt over that bit they could do. Plus being Bones, they are easier to re-position to hold firearms.  The couple of Super Muties I have already are Bones figures, the few axe-wielding barbarians that are less armored I think.

Yeah, he's also been used as a super mutie on the PA board before.  Awesome figure, and definitely on the shopping list.  :D Thanks for the reminder!  :)

Second Aiteal. I have a couple of Heresy barbars for 'random lead pile skirmish gangs', and even though the other minis are 'heroic', I'm gonna have to pass them off as half-ogres or something. o_o :D  35mm easy. I think the latest version of Big Boris tops that, too.

How about Mantic ogres?

Would Vor Neo-Soviet Cyclops be too over the top for a starting point? (Not my photo, just borrowed from Google Image Search)

I think a combo of Bones/Reaper, Heresy and Hasslefree should do the trick! Gotta save my pennies for those though... international shipping + high prices + unfavorable exchange rate =  :o

The Grenadiers are big at 28mm but I wouldn't use them as 8+ foot huge ones. I'd say they are more like 6.5 to 7 feet tall. Mind you, the come at a solid metal base, so that's another 2 mm added to their size :D

I have some Leviathan barbarian miniatures which I once bought off ebay, thinking they were about dwarfish in stature due to their bulkiness. Turns out those guys are true monsters; they're at least 36mm tall and probable taller still!

I think those would fit the bill nicely...

Is Leviathan a manufacturer or an adjective in this instance?  lol

That would be the old Leviathan range of miniatures from Scotia Grendel, whose website I can't access right now for some reason.

lol ;D You're not wrong asking that! Even more interestingly, they were sold as being 25mm too...

Correct and seconded; site seems to be offline, or I would have included a link...

Enigma Miniatures make some outstanding barbarians that are a good head or so taller & suitably bulkier than just about any other mini maker. They are pretty pricey, but high quality pieces from a small company usually are.

GW chaos Marauders et al - lots of multi pose options, might need head swaps though?

Yeah, that's not a bad idea at all.  I've already ordered enough super mutants for my purposes probably, but I may look into that.  Maybe if they have some bigger Hulks it could work for a behemoth.
