Title: What I painted in November (2008)
Post by: Calimero on November 26, 2008, 04:51:54 PM
Well, someone got to be the first to post so I figure why not me?  lol
I know there is a few days to go before the end of the month but I’ll just add pictures if I have the time to finish anything more.
I’m currently waiting on an order of Flock and Static Grass to get to me to finish off the bases but the paint is done!  ;)

Some fantasy figures first...

... and a few WWII German in 28mm (that I will put for sale some time soon ;))

Cheers!  8)

Very nice. Your painting style is very clean, looking. Its hard to describe what i mean (I Hope that makes sense and its a compliment by the way :))

Thanks, I think I know what you mean  lol. I’m not really good at painting highlight and shading so I don’t really add those to my basic painting… Anyway, I’m not very a big fan of the 3 (or more) layers technique either. I think it look good at some distance but I think it look kind of "dirty" when you look closely… Now I’m not sure what I mean… it’s hard to find the right words when translating your thought in an other language.  ;D

I had quite a fruitful month for me.
Firstly the figures I intend to use in Broadsword Adventures:

And then some Future Wars figures:

All being well, I might even get one  or two others finished by the end of the month.

Another SOE adventurer, this time from Warm Acre.

From a tub of Early Learning Centre Dinos, come these monsterous Killer Roos.

Not sure how Roos are Dinos, but they'll make good prey for the Lost World hunters.

The forces of SkyNet are slowly growing, another batch of Robots from EM4.

Cheers again to Svennn the DH Nut for these Wraith minis, after he heroically answered the call when
I was seeking some Ringwraith models.

Well, if we're talking finished minis, then I have a grand total of naff all this month.  :(

Too cold in my nerd-hole in the loft to spend much time up there sitting still, and suffering a post-BLAM ennui. Now I don't have anything to work for, I can't seem to get motivated.

If I can get my arse in gear, I might be able to show three or four by Sunday night.

I've got tons undercoated though.  ::)

@revford, I have that Warmacre girly, but her gun snapped off as I was cleaning her up so she never got finished. Very thinly cast.

I didn't much like the alternate pose version of her, but I do really like this one.

Now I look more closely I can see in the photo that her pony tail has already taken some battle damage.  Back to the painting table for her.   :(

Yeah, this pose was my favourite of the pair as well, so double the dummy-spitting when I knackered it. That's why it never got finished.

Great stuff so far. I will wait and see if I can add to the three or four I have done before months end.

Nice to see the wraiths painted after so long in my attic. They have come out really well. I always imagined them in white for some reason.

Dinsdale is superb - that would have taken me all month on its own.

JB - can you not drill out the gun and add a wire barrell on the SOE adventurer??

Fantastic Bronze on those shields Capthugeca.

Love the big adventurer guy, almost comicbook but in a good way. Nice mini, nice paint Calimero.

JB - can you not drill out the gun and add a wire barrell on the SOE adventurer??

It snapped along the top of her hand, just below the cylinder of the revolver. The whole thing just snapped clean off. It is a very fine casting and just bent under light pressure from a file as I was cleaning it up.

I was going to buy a pack of Webleys from BAM to replace it as they are a bit chunkier.

Meninobesta, Dinsdale is awesome, very well done, chap!  :-*

Some lovely work there.

Quite fruitful for me - but no photos.  Apart from the Artizan Spartan which I have already shown.

Moriarty and four thugs.  Not based yet.  Might actually hold them back for the next LPL.  Probably call them "Moriarty Makes His Move."  :)

Oonagh and Valentina from "Newbold"

BAM Gestapo man.

HF "Rose."

Artizan KKBB "The Avengers"

Photos will, eventaully, follow.

Dinsdale is superb - that would have taken me all month on its own.

thanks!  :) but it only took a full afternoon! it's a foundry model, and it was very fun to paint! I started with dark brown + black wash on top of it and then block-painted lighter colours until the whole miniature was in yellowish dark sand tone! in this step I was somewhat frustrated because the giraffe looked like a starving lion, due to the effect of the shades that were too strong! Nevertheless I kept with my plan!
After that I painted dark brown "spots" and then on top of it I've painted lighter brown tones just to leave the edge more strong (colour-wise)!
Overall I never used no extraordinary techniques with this mini!

Captain, what do you mean, "what are they for"? They are for having. And looking at. Honestly, call yourself a LAFer!  lol

Did you not watch Monkey when you were a kid then?

Actually, they are for a Chinese adap of Mordheim that I am mulling around, hopefully for inclusion in next year's BLAM! programme.

Lots of Kung-fu skills, hopping vampires, and badly dubbed action.

(Oh, and Pigsy is my favourite too, as it happens. And it's a muck-rake. Eeew, imagine being hit with that!)

Cheers for the comments, by the way, Svennn too.  :)

Sorry Rob. I missed out on Monkey completely.

I used to watch 'The Water Margin' though. (God - I can still hum the bloody theme tune... )

But of course your new toys are for having and looking at. I understand that fatal impulse all too well  ;)

Just questioning the martial utility of a pig with a lawn rake...  lol

Below is a picture of what I finished painting in November for my pulp game. Painted some small bits and pieces of scenery for my board as well, crates, shelfs and street furniture. No decent picture yet.

Thanks Calimero (how did you manage to glue the stars so neatly to the models?) and Gamer Mac (where did you get those lovely old cars?) :)

One of my favourite animals and very nicely painted. Thankyou and this is what i'd like to achieve for my animals too.
Ahem, could I please ask you about painting tips for giraffes. I use Vallejo paints.

Helen

Thanks! I'm starting to blush now :)
Regarding the painting techniques, I also use vallejo paints (besides citadel paints, they are the only store-available acrylics here in Portugal, which I really don't mind because I'm very happy with their quality). I've block painted all the figure, fist the skin tones and after that I've painted the spots on it!
The main trick (if you want to call it that) is to really leave the recesses very dark, so dark, that the giraffe looks like a very skinny starving one, I've managed this by painting all the mini in flat brown with a black wash (which is just very water diluted black) all over it, after that I've painted the miniature with flat brown again, and started to add lighter layers of flat brown mixed with US tan Earth until you have a US tan earth layer, after that I've added new layers of tan earth mixed with dark sand and in the last layer I've added a bit of flat yellow to get the right skin tone. In the final layer I've even added a bit of white to really get some details out!
Looking back I really don't thing I needed so much layers of paint, but when I started painting I really didn't know what the final result would be. At this time I had a really skinny looking giraffe, and I wasn't very happy about it! luckily the spots saved the miniature :)
The spots were painted in flat brown (make sure the spots are irregular in shape or you'll get a giraffe that looks like a chess board) and then I've added layers of flat brown mixed with us tan earth until the last layer of us tan earth, making sure that the darkest tone was near the edge of the spot. the spots should be bigger in the center of the giraffe and they get smaller in the end of the legs and in the face.
the mane was just a dry-brush with us tan earth mixed with dark sand

To be truly honest the spots should have been a bit more redder (my wife borrowed me a national geographic magazine with some different giraffe illustrations, so that I could take some ideas, there are some differences between eastern and western African coast giraffes).
Please check the picture:

this was my first wild animal painting, I've already bought a couple of lions and a gorilla and I'm looking forward to paint those beacuse I really enjoyed painting this one, but ww1 French are on the queue now :)
In the top of the "want to paint" list of animals are geese, every time I read a battle report from Plynkes the thing I like most are the geese, they really add something to a battle table! :)

So, I managed to paint some more figures! And, technically, we're still the November 30th in Canada!  ;D

First the remaining of the 28mm WWII German... The "nationality shield" on the helmets are not all exactly of the same size but they are hand painted...

...and a fantasy Cavegirl and Dungeon Loot...

...those FoW German has been finished for quite a few days now but I add sand to the bases and painted it today…
(http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll206/Calimero_34/Photo783.jpg)

...this one I painted early in the month but I forget to post picture. It’s my very first 40mm figure!

Have I mentioned, that I hate you all..?  >:(  ;)

I managed to finish a mere 6 minis this month (not counting the mummies I had to touch up).

I really need to work on that 'speed-painting skill -2'

I have a Copplestone zombie trooper almost finished, a Minas Tirith Knight likewise (am filling the narrow gap between rider and saddle), and a pack camel about half done..... (awaiting some paint from Miniaturicum), and this week is crazy with no spare time for hobbying at all....  :'(

Good stuff, Calimero.
I particularly like the loot. Is it home-made or bought?

Well, seems I only got to finish two more (bloody singlehood forcing me to go out on dates instead of painting...), which I'll try to post later today.

Meninobesta, as they are water slide transfers, I removed the stars from their sheet and I put a drop of warm water on the model were I want the stars to be. I then press down the transfers with a cotton swab. If the surface is uneven, I cut the transfer directly on the model with a hobby knife (with a new blade). The funny thing is that the gloss of the transfers is less visible on the actual models… it somehow "pop-up" on the photos.

Capthugaca, the Dungeon Loot is from Reaper Miniatures code 03118.  8)

@ Danny: I told you at the weekend that they looked great, and I still say they do. Santa is especially nice in close up. Well done, mate.  :)

@ Matakishi: So many apes!  :-*  (Are the giant apes Tarmangani, or Gomangani? Its been ages since I read the books.)

The group on the left are Tarmangani, albeit rather beastly ones. They're from Opar. The ones at the back on the right are Mangani and follow Korak into battle.
At the front is Bolgani, the gorilla.

Its a Black Hat Martian Empires Flying Cephalod, Niels. They are for 18mm games, but make excellent Cthulhu gribbly beasts for 28mm.

Some Doctor Who stuff:

The Master (previously posted on Future Wars):

Some Sea Devils:

And the Moxx of Balhoun, K9 and Kiv:

The Master and most of the Sea Devils are BTD. The two Sea Devils in the centre are old Citadel minis. The  Moxx of Balhoun and K9 are plastic Micro Universe repaints. Kiv is an old 40mm scale Fine Art Castings mini, but I thought it looked just as good next to 28mm stuff.

Cool stuff around, as always. oxiana, I like the Master a lot. Fancy clothes and a determined look, great. :D

Okay, I'm a little late this time again. Had to 'spare' some of the minis, because they were part of a competition.

First, a British regiment of the American War of Indepence. Started with some figs months ago, but finished the whole bunch in November. All by Perry.

Second, a bunch of Dark Age Germanic warriors (Wargames Foundry) for a Broadsword Adventures campaign. The buildings in the background are freshly painted, too (made by Gripping Beast).

Third, some Dark Age civilians (Gripping Beast) and livestock.

Fourth, scenery items, also to make appearance in the mentioned BA campaign.

very nice paintjob. All you have done excellent jobs and photos.

Really I liked most the AWI British !

My son was very much inspired and made me to buy some AWI British (Foundry) to paint. If we are lucky enough we might have some photos from him!
