Gents
just to advise as of early next year I will turn my attention
to my Maximillian range which needs cavalry/Generals et all
so im happy to take any suggestions/requests on board for
New Troop types or regiments.
as im working on Italy in 1860 this makes life a bit easier
for me as the periods run side by side.
looking forward to any feedback :D 8) :) :-*

Mounted and especially dismounted Chasseurs d'Afrique or other French cavalry.
Basically, any cavalry and generals as mounted/dismounted pairs. You need both for skirmish games, and there's not a lot of period dismounted cavalry.

thanks for your input........fully noted! :D

Ged, skirmish poses for the Belgians and Egyptians (for my skirmish games obvs).
And a second for mounted and dismounted Cavalry. :)

Jeff965......interesting suggestion regarding the Egyptians
as that had crossed my mind...such a stunning uniform and
a crack unit to boot! :o

great news!
Some generic Mexican cavalry that can be deployed for either side would be a good addition - both for us gamers and for you in terms of an 'in demand' multi purpose range.

some great input there..................im heading down the Mexican Cavalry
route myself ...
but still mulling things over as there are some great units I can do

It's a bit later than the period (1889), but Frederick Remington's The Mexican Major and corresponding Mexican Cavalry would be lovely:

Definitely some generic types but it would also be nice to see more mounted contra and mule mounted Foreign legion. Great that your doing more with the Maximillian range!

I have been looking at the Contra,s again as I love
the mounted/dismounted side of the conflict . will
bear in mind

Maybe the Austrian legion cavalry too :).
-
Goliad
agreed the Austrian cavalry would complete the trio
I was looking at the uniforms (undress) to see if I could
do a Generic figure to cover my Garibaldi range and
Mexico........work continues! :D
good suggestion

Those horses on the Remington picture look very ... short.
-
I would love to see some more cavalry. A few Austrian hussars plus an officer & bugler would be nice. Maybe alternative hands with swords, carbines, & lances. The same for Mexican line & irregular cavalry too.

I think what the range lacks at the moment is appeal to people who wish to do brigade-sized battles using battalions as basic tactical units, as opposed to skirmish games which will require a dozen to twenty figures a side.
Anyone wishing to fight typical Mexican War engagements with 4-6 battalions per side will be hard pressed to find enough suitable figures in the Gringo range to field proper infantry units : the FFL/French infantry were obviously sculpted to create a Camerone vignette, which means they won't rank up well unless one is doing a firing line unit with the front rank kneeling and the rear rank firing overhead. The Mexicans are a bit more versatile in terms of poses but lack command figures and have no officers, standard bearers or musicians to lead them.
Rather than do relatively minor units (colourful though they may be), my suggestion would be to add enough figures to allow the creation of basic gaming units for both sides - i.e French line infantry and Mexican Republican troops - in marching and attacking poses, just like you did with the Garibaldini and Neapolitan infantry for your Risorgimento range. Once the steak and potatoes troops have been covered, add artillery for both sides and then some generic cavalry. Then proceed to the more exotic but less vital troop types.
Just my two pesos.
-
Arthur
many thanks for your usefull imput. you kindly sent me information on the
French line infantry and I have been mulling over the best way to approach
this as and when im able to do the French for 1861 I need to cover 1859
and possibly 1866 ,so am looking at the best approach bearing in mind the
change in rifles etc. of course im aware there are shortages and these will
be addressed with the bread and butter troops. French headgear is important
ie the use of the Kepi and the correct jacket etc.
Republican marching troops are in the pipeline as are cavalry and other smaller
units..the hardcore center units I need to tackle first.
Happy to take all suggestions on board though I will of course
go my own sweet way as this is a work of passion and not so
commercial!.still I will address the shortfalls as I wish to tie in all my
1859-1866 projected projects together with a degree of crossover as
its a big ask at the moment.
Arthur how would you potray the French in Mexico uniform wise?
looking forward to your reply

Ged,
Thanks for letting us know and asking for requests once again. I have a humble request that may seem a bit odd, as it is asking for more of the same rather than something truly new -- that is, I'd really love to see you provide a second pose for the Ottoman/Egyptian/Sudanese Battalion, to add to the "Marching" pose you have.
Any one of, "Advancing," " Firing Line," or "Skirmishing," would make me very happy and lead me to purchase a battalion worth of said troops. My personal choice would be the tried-&-true, "Advancing," pose, but that's just me.
After that, I'd ask for Mexican cavalry, both uniformed and guerrilla/irregular.
And of course... my broken-record request of a third Legion officer for Camerone.
Thanks again for being open to suggestions, and for returning to Maximillian Mexico after your ongoing sojourn in Risorgimento Italy!
-
Ethan
good to hear from you........I have to admit the Egyptian battalion are
a real favourite of mine and the "skirmish" line appeals not to forget
the advancing pose :D
I know there is a dearth of Cavalry....
,,,and French line.......
and much more :o
and Arthurs sensible "Bread and potatoes" suggestion.
I have started the ball rolling with some commissions yeaterday
just need to gather every suggestion then I will decide, cheers men

I wish to tie in all my
1859-1866 projected projects together with a degree of crossover as
its a big ask at the moment.
I think is emmintly feasable..at least for my favourite front of that period..which is the Pontifical Army, his allies and ennemies and campaigns...the most famous battle in which they participated was Mentana in 1867 and the uniforms of both French units (the famous Chassepot armed guys of the expedionary force who helped to win the day) and those of the majority of Pontifical ones (Foreign Carabiniers, Chasseurs, and Antibes Legion) are at 90% similar to those of French Infantry in Mexico including képis with white neck cloth. September in the South/Central Italy could be hot also for soldiers coming from Cote d'Azur or Colonies.

-
Hi Ged,
As Italwars says uniforms were very similar, especially in Franco-Italian armies, as France was seen as the pre-eminent military force in Europe at this time. Her dark days and Prussian ascendency had yet to come. Military fashion very much followed French style, as you can see from both the Pontificial Zouaves and those who sprung up on the other side of the Atlantic.
Separate heads might be the way to go here, with kepi, havelocks, turbans, fezzes, etc being available.
Although there are a few companies promising French infantry for the period, only a couple have lead on the ground at the moment and none has a comprehensive range. You could steal a march on them.
Whatever you come up with will be good, I'm sure of that.
-
italwars ...great post with much food for though. I have a soft spot for the
papal troops with the sheer diversity and almost glamorous uniforms and
the wide variety encompassed.........will be looking at these in depth. :D

In that case, plenty more Republicans to go up against my Austro-Franco-Belgians, plus cavalry and artillery for both sides as as probably already been brought up.
Am I right in thinking the Austrian contingents also included a force of Slovenian volunteers?

I would like to confirm Gringo40s will be adding to the Maximillian range
this year with the first addition being:.................................................
Irregular and Regular Mexican Republican cavalry a favourite of mine
these will be varied so they can be used for other periods so I have
gone into depth on them........
I have also had New Horses made for the Maximillian period as I look

I would not mind seeing some more marching/advancing Foreign Legion. The current sculpts make a lovely group but for me building units (e.g. 3 x 8 figures for Sharp Practice) it would be nice to base them around 3 - 4 marching/advancing sculpts to give a general look to the unit with a couple of firing or other sculpts to give a bit of character. The Belgians and Egyptians both have these base sculpts for unit building, which is nice.
I wondered too if separate heads might be on the cards - along the lines that Boot Hill do them i.e a sprue with different heads to do your own conversions (so no need to make new headless sculpts).

I agree that figures so units can be made up would be good - so yes more French, maybe a few more Belgians for variety, especially anyone to carry flags historical or fanciful!
Same goes for the Mexicans, at the moment you've got one casting in kepi, four in shako - some more of those or as has been mentioned seperate heads would be good, and (I may have mentioned once or twice) command! :D
Looking forward to the cavalry!

I think a Clint Eastwood and Shirley Maclaine from "Two Mules for Sister Sara" would be cool. Mounted and dismounted, of course. I know there are quite a few mounted ACW yankees out there, but a character pack with Charleton Heston as Major Dundee, Richard Harris as Captain Benjamin Tyree and James Coburn as Samuel Potts. Those with some plastic Perry ACW cavalry would look pretty damn cool IMHO. And maybe some Yaqui Indians too.

Wow, Ged... those Mexican regular & irregular cavalry look absolutely gorgeous. My personal favorite is the Lancer with sombrero hanging on his back. His face is amazing, filled with character but still not overly stylized. My only request would be for a few different heads with slightly different faces for variety sake, which seems to matter more to me with irregulars. Still, a very impressive new batch!

Beautiful work.

Great cavalry - Republican regular and irregulars covered! (Except more regular lancers - either that or I buy lots of the one figure and various of the others and start chopping arms and heads off...)
So, the big question is what's up next Ged? :D
Since you often ask for suggestions (and I know I've made several!) I was working out forces for Sharp Practice yesterday and basically coming up with a wishlist.
So, granted I know next to nothing of the costs, time etc of getting figures made, and most of these have probably already been mentioned, and the fact that you aren't making a range dedicated solely to SP, but whilst I'm on a roll...
- Republican Infantry command - say a couple of officers and a standard bearer. This has got to be a quick win surely?
- A couple more poses in stovepipe, maybe marching or advancing. Again with a couple of command/leader/character types.
- More infantry in kepi: at the moment you've got 1, some more of those would work for either Republican or Imperial, again that would probably be a quick win. Especially if there's a couple of officer types in there.
- Mexican Artillery: you've already got a couple of guns with the French, and suitable artillery pieces can be sourced elsewhere I'm sure, so for ease how about a generic set of crew, again would probably work for Republican or Imperial.
- Imperial Cavalry, of course!
- Some more generalised Foreign Legion
But I think from those there would be enough to put together some decent forces, what with what you've already released. (Purely from the perspective of my ideas for SP forces of course!)
After that:
- More French - loads of scope for other French units.
- Would be nice to see some more Belgians but, realistically there's enough there for a small unit in SP. Same with the Austrians and the Contra-Guerillas.
- Mounted Contra-Guerilllas
- Other more obscure types, Slovakian volunteers anyone?
If by any chance you have any of these on the burner, my money is here waiting :D
On a slightly different angle, I was wondering whether the Perry plastic confederates might be converted into mexicans, if I can find sombreros for them...
Ok, more like a list of demands than a wishlist, but it's only because the figures are so flippin' good!

Having a keen interest in all things Mexican, as well sculpted as these cavalry figures are I think it would be remiss of me not to qualify the comment to the effect that they can be used to depict troops of the Mexican Revolution:
1. Lances weren't employed in the 1910 - 1920 conflict.
2. Obviously the muzzle-loading carbines are well and truly obsolete. Only a Zapatista peon infantryman would be seen with such an antique, and then only out of desperation for any kind of firearm - and it would be ditched as soon as something more modern could be obtained.
3. The traditional Mexican charro/vaquero costume the irregulars are sculpted in would only be worn as full dress for ceremonial purposes, and then only by bodyguard and possibly some rurales units. I know there's a plate in the MR Osprey that depicts the Dorados in this style of costume, but in photos of the unit in the field they're wearing much more up-to-date, practical, drab clothing. Also note that the Dorado shown in the plate is armed with a Mauser bolt-action magazine-loading carbine.
I think that about covers it :-).

interesting submission....and point taken
.....
many of the new castings are pistol armed
and are not all armed with carbines so lance
chaps can be left out but to be honest the
rate of advancement in dress did not really
appiy to Mexico..........so I reckon there
was loads of old kit used both in dress arms :D
post Santa Anna things moved at a glacial pace.. o_o 8) :o :D

Foundry have rereleased their Maximilian range... shame size wise they're not that compatible - but Foundry has artillery and Imperial troops... competition Ged?
(Is your Maximilian range like waiting for George RR Martin's next A Song of Ice and Fire book? lol - Good things come eventually? :D)

there will be more additions to my Maximillian
range...

I have used Ged's figures with the newer Foundry Old West Mexicans. The older Maximillian range are more 25mm than 28mm so they don't mix very well.
-
I've got Foundry units made up from Mexicans from the Old West Range - what was until recent the 'South of the Border' collection - so figures from Foundry packs OW162, 163, 164, 165, 167, 168
https://www.wargamesfoundry.com/collections/old-west?page=6
Those are all 25mm rather than 28mm. They're fine in seperate units, and nice enough figures but definitely not mix and match with Gringos (even taking into account that not all people are the same size and height!). Some were so small by comparison that I just got rid of them. Although strangely, the 'Capt Zacarias' figure in OW167 Mexican Soldiers Command is actually pretty similar in size to some of Gringos.
I haven't yet tried any from what was their Mexican Adventure Collection: OW171 - OW178 - don't know if there is a size difference there, but I think those are the sets people have said are closer to 28s.
They've just rereleased their original Maximilian Adventure range too, which is what I think you're referring to? In a seperate category from the Old West range - haven't yet got any of those but I may well do, even if for seperate units, as they've got things like Imperial Infantry and suchlike.
Upshot being: Foundry figures are nice, size varies and mostly too small to mix with Gringos, but will do in seperate units.
Gringo's are excellent, lovely to paint, I mean really lovely, and worth waiting for expansions to the range :D (But in the meantime I'll happily paint some smaller chaps too)
-
The Foundry Mexican 'range' is actually the amalgamation of various sub-ranges sculpted by different designers, hence the variations in size.
Packs OW161 to OW 168 were all done by Mark Copplestone, except the officers in pack OW 164 which come from the Maximilian expedition range sculpted by Aly Morrison. The same figures are also found in pack Max001 (mostly). Aly's sculpts are definitely smaller than their Copplestone colleagues, being more slender and closer to 26mm than 28.
Packs OW 171 to OW 178 were later additions to the range, done after Mark Copplestone had left Foundry. These were sculpted by Mike Owen and tend to be a bit larger, though not by much. They'll dwarf the Aly Morrison figures though, and they are done in a different style.
