I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good figure case for transporting minis? I'm thinking of the Citadel skirmish or battle ones, which seem (for GW products) surpringly affordable, but if anyone has any other recommends I'd be glad to hear them.

Depends what you're after. I do have some of the new GW cases. They're clever in design, but limiting. If you don't want to basically rip up massive parts of it (and unlike other versions, it's not something that can be easily slotted back) to fit larger or more awkward models, there's a limit to how much you can do. If it's mostly rank and file, they're not bad, but ask for a trial, because there's a fine line between how cleverly designed they are, and how fucking annoying they are to use. You do get used to it, but I bought one for my AoS Skeletal Horde and I partly wish I hadn't.
If you want things on a more reasonable budget, I'm rather fond of KR Multicase (http://www.krmulticase.com/). They can be bought cheaply, the card case is pretty rigid and solid, and you can get reinforced bags to carry multiple cases. They also do custom trays for a lot of systems. I do find their ordering system a bit dogmatic and more pricey than I'd like, but it is worth it if you have specific needs. Otherwise, a lot of the basic case loadouts can be bought easily and cheaply off ebay, which is where I got most of mine. I have about 8 or so KR cases. They're the cheapest in the market I believe, and certainly in terms of getting the kind of case that is tough enough and useful enough. If you're used to old GW cases, just bear in mind that KR trays are designed to optimise capacity, so more out-there poses might not fit and may get damaged more easily than in more spacious sections.
KR also do nice small "skirmish" holders, that encase a 25-model tray around a small, zipped bag (I believe they're called Aquillas? Bought mine off ebay, and it holds my Bloodbowl team).
If you want to throw more money for higher quality, there's Figures in Comfort, Battlefoam and I believe there's also one called Battlecases as well I believe, but I have very little experience of these, having not personally bought from them. I have friends with FIC and Battlefoam cases though. Battlefoam seem to be all about fitting as much as possible into a bag, and FIC were the go to Warmachine carrier for a time, but I haven't played that since Mk.1. I'm sure you'll get more replies that can help you decide.
There's a lot out there. I'd say GW are a little too far on the side of expense for my liking. Sure, they may be decent design, but you get solid plastic (which I don't feel you need unless you're the kind of person who gets struck by lightning, trucks and cross black cats at least twice a week) and foam to hold basically standard models. They have little solutions for some of their bigger, more demandingly posed kits. They also don't add any other extraneous pockets or sections. I find fishing tackle bags, the kinds you find in hobby shops/stores like Boyes etc to have more pockets and useful sections.
It ultimately depends on what you're transporting, and how far. I know a few gamers who mostly play 10-15mm games, mostly regimental, and swear by box files. You can buy them en masse from most stationers for a few quid, and you can easily cut out the adjustable document arm. Add a bit of bubblewrap/foam, you're good to go.
If you're prepared to make a saving, even a fishing tackle bag with a few old cardboard boxes can do the trick, and they have handy pockets for your hobby detritus.
