Saw the clip the other day....looks incredible...

That's a must see!
I'll even learn a few words of Russian if they don't give subtitles lol
-
It looks a lot like that movie "Mongol" except it's "Viking" ;D

Mongol was a lot of fun actually!

Yeah, it was quite good as the sort of film that we wargamers would naturally like. Judging by the trailer, Viking looks very, very similar in style and production budget (to say nothing of the similar naming convention), only with a different historical warrior culture. I wonder if there's any connection - Mongol was directed by a Russian IIRC.
-
*That* is how you do it.......
I realise that the budgets may well have been vastly different for the Last Kingdom and this movie but the BBC did pump £10,000,000 into the former and still came up with a crock of pooh!
Assuming the plot is good and the characters strong it looks very much as though the Russians look like they are pointing the way forward.

Nah it's got square shields and leather helmets again....... ;D
It looks good....but so did that Icelandic/Danish/Canadian version of Beowulf....stunning....til the plot wandered off some place else.
Kidding..off course it looks good and I'll be keeping an eye for this one, Vikings in Russia...about time too.

Honed helmets..... of dear.....
Norse cavalry charges??? lol lol
I'm not saying they didn't happen but there is only one example where the Norse were fighting the Carolingians that I can think of. (I forget the name of the battle) o_o
On the positive side, there are no shields with holes where the boss should be, most are even covered with hide! Certainly an Improvement of The Lost Kingdom
Maybe I was slightly premature in my praise! o_o

Exactly my thoughts lol

Just one on the viking leader.
Not the best movie but certainly a lot of ideas.
Its called Stara Basn and its a Polish movie.

Thank you for this link.
The trailer looks very spectacular ! :P

Even the plot of Viking (as described on Wikipedia) sounds very similar to Mongol, but I can't seem to find any direct connection between the two films.
It seems Viking has in large parts been filmed in Crimea during 2015. I'll say nothing more of it.

I'm guessing political undertones?

Not in the sense of my making a political statement. Just an acknowledgement of the fact that the controversy is there, however you might feel about it.

Yep, I get the gist.

Erm, well, quite torn really as i also do battle reenactment in this period and have a healthy interest in Slav weapons and warfare so in that respect most of the kit looks pretty naff which is a shame. However, the Russians and Poles (stara basn as mentioned earlier) do seem to be able to present a gritty realism to their films which seems to negate any historical inaccuracies...i see this a lot in reenactment, just youtube any Russian or Polish Viking battle for example Wolin then check out (i'm ashamed to say) UK Viking battles...The Russians look lean and hungry and we look like a load of weekend warrior pie eaters. Ok , probably going off course here but hopefully you get my drift that sometimes 'the feeling' has to be there, something the Lost Kingdom never had, real let down that.

A valid point mate.

May not be totally historically accurate but it certainly looks better at a glance than History channels Vikings when it comes to the armor. I think I even saw a bearclad Berserker in there somewhere :D. Would be interesting if the focus was more on the Rus considering it's a Russian film, but I doubt that will happen.

According to the Wikipedia article, the story is about the young usurped ruler of Kievan Rus who flees to exile in Sweden and returns with a so-called "Varangian armada" to retake his lands and then wage war with Byzantium. So it does sound like the Rus will be prominent.

Looks fantastic better than the usual droll. Love Russian movies. From what I understand the Vikings which settled and became the Rus did also come to use cavalry?

They were quite famous for it in later centuries. The elite being the Mounted Druhzina; lance and bow armed.
