I'm hoping to get these played with in 2016 - There's a few of us playing this in the Catterick Garrison (North Yorkshire, UK) area.

Walk through, of sorts, on how the buildings were built.

It looks great:-)

Modest he calls it. That is quite the understatement. Great work so far!

Quite.

Most excellent, will surely follow the progress!

Good looking stuff Roy

Thank you all :)

Thanks. I wasn't sure what to call the topic, to be honest, and after looking at some of the excellent modelling works on this forum my own DIY efforts did seem very modest in comparison.
Good looking stuff Roy
Hello Adam, Thank you. And happy (belated) Blog Day!
-
Looking very good!

These look like great buildings in progress.
Very interesting shapes combined with functionality.
8) 8)
My advice would be*: Keep it simple at the beginning in order to get them table-worthy and then go back later and tart them up a bit with weathering and small details.
That way you get to use them whilst they look finished and you are actually encouraged to go back and add to them later as they are getting used.
You will want to, believe me.
(This lark is highly addictive.....You have been warned! ;)).
*And feel free to tell me to poke the advice if you wish. :D
-
No, its good advice, Mason. Thank you.
I've got one ruin painted, but I haven't added anything to it other than paint.
Whether anyone likes my colour choices remains to be seen lol
-
I've painted one of the ruined buildings shown previously.
With the edges of Storm Frank hitting us, its a bit too dark to take decent photographs, so I'm afraid the following will have to suffice.
I've painted up the two 'ruins' that I showed in the basic construction walk through. As its been noted to me over the Internet, the ruins I'd constructed can be used for various games and settings, the only conflict to period or geographic locality being how they are painted.
I've painted them as red brick, with a lime washed rendering over the top. The bases I've left brown, for now at least. The rubble is an inexplicable grey (answers on a postcard!)
Paints used were those tester pots from Wilkos (a UK department store)

Some feedback, if I may.
You should buy a pot of that wood stain stuff. I am not sure what it is called, but if you don't know what I mean, Army Painter also sells it in a slightly more expensive pot called Army Dip, and GW sells it at an insane premium price called Agrax Earthshade (though admittedly, that's for small minis). Wash it over everything. It will give your buildings both a LOT of definition as well as a sort of dirty look. Especially the recesses of the building will benefit from it, as it also gives a sort of shade. All in all, it will make your buildings look even better!
Finally, if I were you, I'd get some regular sand (just sand) and paste it on the base. Again, it will give your base definition as well as make the buidling mash a bit better and even make it slightly sturdier.
That said, all in all, wonderful start!
Oh and good luck with the storm! Terrible stuff, I saw it on the news today.

Great start....
Hardboard is an interesting choice - foamcore is faster to construct with and just as strong...
As has been suggested they look a little 'bright & clean' for ruined buildings...you could 'stain them' or perhaps consider going grey...
The pic below is from my giant battlecars game

Your terrain looks great. And since its wood it should be fairly durable.
If you want to spruce up your ruins, add some strewn and broken objects to the base. A small rat model here and there is also a fun way to add some character to your terrain.
If you want a stucco like surface on your walls, get yourself a can of spray texture. You can find it for sale in the home paint section of department and hardware stores. I used texture spray on the walls of my Heldorado Saracen garrison.

This is a great project.
The two half buildings are a great idea, you could make a rubble pice to fit inside them, it would come in usefull as a rubble pile in its own right anyway.

Hello all, thank you for the feedback and suggestions. Its much appreciated.
Progress On The DIY 28mm Ruins
What I've got painted, so far.
Possibly not evident from the photo's is that the external and internal walls are two differing colours.
I've left them pretty plain and generic so as to facilitate multi genre and period use.
Cheers for looking.

Looks great, I like the stonework stripped of plaster look on the edges of the ruin.
Thanks for sharing

Coming along very nicely, Roy!

Thank you both :)

To Do
Four more buildings to paint up.
Possibly tone down the paint jobs - Though they are actually a lot less brighter than they appear in the flash photography. There's also more coloured layers than is to be seen in the photo's.
Think about adding some static grass or grass clumps to the terrain bases so it blends in better with the tabletop - Though this is dependent upon what choice of tablecloth I use. If its of a brown colour (muddy) then I'll probably forego any grass.
Not counting the cost of the Minibits trees, nor the GW grass mat, I reckon I've spent around £15 or so on the DIY ruins so far (there's four more to paint, not shown, remember).

Just knocked this together in the joiner's workshop. A skirmish-sized battle-board, that I can use for both DMH (Dead Man's Hand) and my Miniature Paintball Game idea.
Originally I measured up for the ruined buildings I've been making, but post-polyfilla I realised it could probably see use as an Old West game-board, too. Luckily, the 4Ground buildings I have fit!
What might not be obvious from the photo's is that the board features four raised areas, and the central x-route is sunken.
Three coats of various brown paints later and it'll be good for the western United States and paintballing among some ruins. Oh, there's Frostgrave* too. I Might have to call my games Mudgrave.
The metal handle on the wooden framework was my Father's idea. Great idea, Dad!
*Yes, it's probably too small for Frostgrave.
-
Interesting idea for the board, at first I thought you had based it on a pasting table.
what size is it?
-
Hello mister c, sorry for the late reply.
The board's 30" x 24".
There's more shots of it here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=86808.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=86808.0)
I reckon it will now, primarily, be for Old West gaming, as I'm working on a second board to extend the layout. But, if needed, it can be used for other games still.
Cheers,
Roy
