Title: Inspiration: submarine battle cruisers

Actually real projects, but very few saw actual use -- never mind as an "undersea cruiser".

The shady fate of the Surcouf is an added bonus.

It definitely found its way into comics of the era. There was a fleet of them in a Flash Gordon arc with the underwater kingdom (which was in the second or third year of publication) as well in some Timely comics (future Marvel).

I was always facinated by this submersible odd balls, especially the French Surcouf.  I've been thinking about sneaking a miniature into a game of Axis & Allies: War at Sea just for fun.  :D
