Title: Armoured steam lorry
Post by: Rich H on 09 January 2016, 06:58:03 PM
In support of my police I've started on my armoured steam riot lorry.  It'll have a watercannon and knockout gas launchers eventually.

Got me noticing!

Went googling, and have to say you've a very realistic start, though I'm not seeing any enclosed backs yet.

Must be the SF in your VSF.  lol

Can't wait!

There are a few but they are modern conversions, steam lorries were too slow and expensive for mere passengers!

Definitely the SF ;)

Roughtly based on this garret undertype lorry - sort of.

Very nice! That'll sit lovely along side your Scotland Yard building! :-*

Agree about the roof, but something about the 'POLICE'...

Maybe if you frame it a bit with ornamental painting? Sort of like the front of the 'garret undertype lorry - sort of'?

Cracking otherwise!

Thanks
I've kept the Police simple.  Ive got a driver but no crew.
I've had to refill the roof as it was slightly effected by the spray

Not happy with the brass its too gold.
Need to find a decent brass colour.

Plan is to make a second as a coal wagon

That's a great build, love it! - sometimes hitting something that is too gold with a Devlan mud* wash will deaden it a little and make it look brassier.  Maybe a touch of green wash added too.

*other brown washes are available ;)

Thanks I'll give it a go, it's been hit with strong tone wash but I'll try the green.

The coal wagon version it intended to have a lot more flouncy paintwork so I'll try it on that.

Cheers

In the mean time:

A second Steam Lorry for the coal merchant:
(http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/richardhumble/Mobile%20Uploads/20160113_074128_zpsk0mv71w1.jpg) (http://s46.photobucket.com/user/richardhumble/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160113_074128_zpsk0mv71w1.jpg.html)

A minor issue insofar as the lorry is too tall to get into the coal yard but hey ho...

They are a cracking brace, Sir.

Don't worry about a little thing like that, have a hinged stovepipe similar to some of the Showmans engines ...

It would need a hinged roof... lol
I'll jsut have it that they recently bought the lorry (it's going to be very shiny) but overlooked the gate height.

Just knock a hole in the coal yard so it'll fit  :D

I've got some Lledo horse drawn coach things coming too to fill up the streets a bit more too.

I liek the idea of a busy street where players have to dash across to avoid the traffic!

Would a curved, wrought iron arch be suitable?

Now there is a possibility- I could laser cut something fancy...  might have to be careful as it'll be fragile - perhaps magnetise it - thanks I'll explore the options!

If you're lasering, you can add a name to the arch as well.

Good looking vehicles!

Not sure the 'POLICE' lettering looks Victorian period though, maybe an raised border around it would help? If your laser cutting could you cut the letters with a border into the plastic with a Victorian font?

Is that ABS plastic you are using?

Laser cutter hmmm still waiting to get myself a small lathe  :(

Rich,
Personally I'd remove the lintel/cross beam. The wrought iron might be a bit OTT for a coal yard, with a tin fence. On some of James multi-storey builds it might look a bit posh  ;) James'  Architectural knowledge is slightly more modern than mine ( no museum has ever asked for any thing that wasn't thatched or even post Tudor So my powers fail me lol) but some times less is more,As RMZ mentioned some steam wagons had collapsible stacks anyway so you could use that line and leave it as it is.
Nice models as always  :D The only thing I might add to the metal weathering.Would be to change the roof colour(our try it on the second one first) and add a small amount of soot / smoke staining on the roof. It adds a little story telling to the model just as weathering the brass does.

Yep probably but I couldn't find a font that looked what I would consider 'victorian' so I went for something a bit later.
I'm using styrene but it doesn't cut very well and the detail melts back.  I could cut in something like greybaord but it's quite fragile and tiny detail can catch fire sometimes...  Could try a border but I quite liked the stark look of it.  I'll mock it up see how it looks.

Laser cutter is a useful but it was a pretty big risk due to the poor quality of some stuff out of China.

Thanks!
I suppose you are right... just liked the idea of a posh sign!  I'd not considered how appropriate it would be.
I'll go with plan A and stick one to the wall instead.  I'll just leave it for now and have the lorry parked out side.
The lintel actually adds quite a bit of strength to the fence line.

Yep there is weathering to go still on both the vehicles and buildings.  Not really sure how I'm going to weather a gloss back lorry but I'll work something out.

Rich,
I suspected they were structural,
A little food for thought two non muddy weathering ideas.

Here's what I did to weather a black Victorian vehicle I made. Perhaps a little less rust for a better maintained Police vehicle?  There's lots of very, very thin layers of wash across the black, which can also make it look a little more convincing (black vehicles always look dirty!).

I also found that a little bit of spot colour detailing (like the red and white areas) can break up the monotonous black, and is quite common on old steam powered vehicles.

Good luck with the weathering :)

Good choice of colour.
A red ,is one of the best colours to weather, and it'll contrast nicely with its load of coal, and the Police version.
