Title: Source of 28mm half-pikes for Montrose Irish?
Post by: Kommando_J on 19 January 2016, 05:59:27 PM
As the title says i'm looking for some suitable half-pikes that would be compatible for the Montrose Irish box set from warlord, being honest with myself i;m probably never going to collect a full ECW army but several skirmish forces seems more feasible and being an Irishman in Scotland thought that the Irish Brigade would be perfect.

Also does anyone know which musician is included in the box set, the drummer or piper? I'm asking so I can order the other off warlord when I order my Irish box set, also any good online sources of information/pics would be appreciated.

I know Gripping Beast do steel spears/pikes/lances in various lengths. Sounds obvious, but can you cut them down?

If you are buying the box set from Warlord, you might as well buy metal pikes to cut down from them too.

From what i've read half-pike are not cut down pikes but actually spontoons, also I presumed the warlord box set came with pikes.

TAG do a set of 10 partizans which is probably the nearest you'll find to a half-pike.  Link: http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/index.php?prod=1001

Further to the previous answers I would simply cut the pikes down with a decent pair of pliers or side cutters.

The set contains a drummer:

There are other pictures of the unit on my blog I completed a while back.

Blimey, sorry that's a big image. Don't know how to reduce it.

You need to edit it to reduce the images mate. It's a right pain imo. Not sure why they changed the default size of the images in the forum settings, as it never used to be that big.

Thanks for all the help guys, having received my box set(which does come with a drummer) I want o ask, can the miniatures be used for other conflicts?

For example different theaters of the the thirty years war, the Irish Confederate Wars and the Cromwellian War?

Eureka supply their Montrose Irish figures with half pikes.
I hadn't heard about them being possible spontoons before, I shall investigate further. Thank you for bringing that up.

They weren't spontoons, they were half pikes.  And in all likelihood they equipped themselves with full pikes as soon as they could in Scotland, certainly after Tippermuir (September 1644)
