I see from the ads in the wargaming press that the theme this year is Steampunk...
I know Jimbibbly will be presenting his awesomely spectacular 'Dorset smugglers' table and game.
What else will LAF friends be doing at the show?
Personally, I will be shopping, admiring the eye candy, and hopefully saying hello to a good few of you :)
It's on 16th April by the way.
-
Quick answer to your thread title.....no! I'm looking forward to Salute 2017! ;)
Still need to see about arrangements to get down and see if my bro wants to as well.
-
Bought my ticket :D
What a faff that was - took me age to get my birthday right on the drop down boxes- eventually realised I had to choose month then year then date...durggg :?

Why on earth do they need your DoB to buy a ticket for Salute?
-
Yup, trading and demoing Dorset this year :D
I start my prep last October ::)
Never gets any easier lol
cheers
James

So the company doing the ticketing can market other c**p to us at Excel
-
Ah, that time of year again. When we in the rest of the world have to exercise patience when ordering from UK companies because Salute preparations are running them ragged ;)
-
I probably will not come to Salute as our € is so weak at the moment so it is much to expensive to go to London at the moment.
-
The thought of steam punk is enough to put me off o_o :D
-
The bad news is that for the second year in a row my organisation is making me go abroad over the salute weekend. The good news is that it's Northern Italy to study WW1 and WW2 battlefields.
-
I've still never been. I can never convince myself that it will be worth the cost when so much stuff is available online. The train cost alone would bag me at least 5 x-wing large ships! I do miss some great tables and displays and the chance of a chat with fellow LAFers though!
-
I'm hoping to be there at the Freebooter Miniatures demo table again.
-
Honestly I can't justify the cost this year having not been massively impressed in previous years. I must admit I will miss the fantastic demo games that will be on display but tbh I'll probably just get my fix on here and spend my pennies at Vapnartak next month.
-
Looking forward to it hugely! There should be lost of new stuff on the stall (modern British and WW2 Soviets in 28mm) plus more Chaos figures.
My US rep Rob Walter will be there (I haven't seen him in an age), my UK rep will be there too and hopefully we will see Tony Barton on the day.
There is also have a pre-European contact Maori game being demonstrated by a friend from Melbourne.
Stop by and say "G'day" and you will pick up a free 28mm kangaroo (while stocks last). Plus if anyone would like figures bringing (post free), let me know by 16th March.
It should be a hoot!
-
Thoroughly looking forward to it. Post divorce and new house it's going to be a strictly budgeted affair this year though. Fortunately I've already paid for the hotel but am currently shuddering at the cost of train travel....£84 return from Stockport to London Euston. Coach is out as, although much cheaper, I lose Friday and Sunday which I use for a bit of good ol' fashioned tourism. Will have to get the entry tickets nearer the day.
-
Flights are booked so I should be there (don't tell the volcanoes though).
Grabbed a room at a local motel so I don't have to stop drinking to catch the last train out.
Looking forward to seeing everybody and partaking in a little shopping.
Pete

Good man Pete 8)

James
-
Already looking forward to it...already know what I want to buy....already know I'll have extra funds if I bring my own sandwiches
-
I'm not so much anticipating it, as fearing it... it'll be our first trip to Salute, and the first time we've gone to a show as traders rather than visitors. Never even visited a show further south than Sheffield before... baptism of fire time! :o
cheers
Michael
-
Sadly it looks like a no-show for me. Couldn't get a table to run a game, and same story for several other gamers I know. I think it has booked up very quickly this year for games.
Curiously, when the pre-event information came round, the theme was HG Wells' Little Wars, which has now changed to Steampunk. I wonder if the theme will ever be WW1 on one of the hundredth anniversary years? Time is running out...
-
Never too early! We're gearing up for the big day. Trading and hope to have four gaming tables - that will include a quick drop demo spot.
-
Trading as Bad Squiddo Games/The Dice Bag Lady , super excited, it's always a bit of a whirlwind. Lots of releases planned, so all that sort of stress :D :D
-
.... am currently shuddering at the cost of train travel....£84 return from Stockport to London Euston.
Managed to get return train for £47 which is a lot better (I just rechecked the virgintrains site the other night and there were cheaper ones available suddenly)...Salute tickets bought....now just near beer and lead money.........
-
looking forward to Salute just putting the finishing touches to a game im involved
in..the Taking of Palermo in 1860 featuring my Garibaldini 1860 range, buildings, barricades ..should be fun with my mates from the Continental Wars Society under the legendary Ralph Weaver who is running the game itself

Hell yeah, looking forward to it.
will indulge myself in some impulse buys (nothing excessive) and try to meet up with 6milphil.
Also will check if I can get some more of my AvP wave 2 stuff from Prodos ::).

Finally got the hotel booked, and ordered an acrylic display case... now I just need to paint the minis to put in it! :D
cheers
Michael

I'll be there helping out with Jimbibbly's game
EDIT: A change in plan involving spending the wekeend with friends means I will be queueing as a normal punter this year. However, I will still be popping over to the Oshiro Dorset Smugglers game from time to time to cover for anyone needing a break.
Looking forward to some shopping :)
-
Yep, Gophering at Ainsty as usual
If anyone wants pre-orders (including Footsore and 1672) let Andy know in plenty of time 'cos he'll be away at the start of April (lucky whatsit!)

If you regularly help Andy out I must have spoken to you several times over the years (Smoggycon and Battleground?) and not realised. Andy was deep in conversation with someone at Battleground last time so I didn't talk to him but might it have been you who sold me my stuff (including the Danger 5 box set impulse buy!)? I obviously don't expect you to remember individual customers, just wondering if it was you that was there?

The ugly one was me, the pretty one was Tracy ;)

I will make an effort to say hello next time! You were very nice though and rounded down my purchase!
-
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ;)

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ;)
Ehhhmm, I mean you overcharged me!

Looking forward to my first Salute as a punter for a few years. I've been happily demoing for crooked Dice for the last few. Due to the birth of my fourth son this year I need to help with childcare a bit... Ergo I shall have my 9 and 7 year old sons in tow. I'm getting them excited for it too. I reckon wandering the hall for few hours should tire them out too

Six weeks today. Not long to go now... ;D

Does anybody know if their will be new releases (like plastic boxed sets, new wargame rules, ...) at Salute? Would be interesting to know.

Probably best to check the companies' websites and/or forums to find out what will be released then.

All I know about so far is Renedra bringing out a big tower to form part of their forthcoming castle system and GB's plastic Late Romans.

Less than a week now before I catch the hairyplane - can't wait even though lots of traders I'd hope to see aren't there
I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the games on show

I've now got a printed shirt for the Dear Tony Blair blog so should be reasonably recognizable if anyone wants to chat about old minis etc.
Really...I will look very cool and trendy.
No, really.
Honestly??
:D
-
I've now got a printed shirt for the Dear Tony Blair blog...
Printed T shirts are the way to go... I've got an Oathsworn shirt done for Salute. Previously I'd just been telling people to look out for the bald guy with a beard, which might have been a bit confusing at a wargames show! :D
-

Dear Boy ,
Wow ! , please say hello,
"Nice one Cecil" figure hugging hand made jumper by Clarence , will be my outfit on

The ugly one was me, the pretty one was Tracy ;)
Tbh you do have two looks - one the shaven headed ex-firm look, especially if Crouchie is nearby. The other, usually reserved for dogging, is the trendy geography teacher. ;)

Aha! So you couldn't resist!
Well, I'll keep a lookout for you Tom, while I'm doing the rounds of the show. Then i'll be helping to man Jimbibbly's Dorset Smugglers game for a couple of hours between around 1230 - 2.30. Not sure about an LAF meet - we always say we'll do it, but it never seems to amount to much... But i know there will be a great many members of LAF there, and 6mmPhil has been shifting LAF badges again, so look out for them :)
-
OK will be at the smuggler game at the appointed time!! ;)
-
Do you know the Number of the game ?!
-
GG11 :)

At least I had the time to make myself a breakfast of champions ;D

Not sure what happened, and hadn't followed this thread to the latest details so missed the meet if there was one. I did go to sexy Jim's stall for 1.30 but was redirected to the game, couldn't find it as I didn't know it was a Dorset game, assumed it'd be Japanese themed. ::)
Did anyone meet up? I met a few LAFers, some by chance and some by arrangement - the usual joy of course.
-
Sexy Jim? Do you know something we don't? lol
A fair few LAFers dropped by the Dorset game to say hello, some old friends and some new. :)
A great day as usual, I didn't see much at all outside of the immediate area around the Dorset game. When I popped out for my brief shopping and comfort breaks I felt there were more people than last year. I was pleased to see so many more new companies most of whom I had never heard of. It's a good thing to see new blood in the industry.
-
Sexy Jim? Do you know something we don't? lol
Oi ;D
Well, a good day all in all. A pleasure to meet old friends and new :)
I (and several of the other traders I spoke to) thought footfall was less than last year ???
It is good to see so many new, smaller companies but I'm wondering if the larger companies (Wayland being the most notable) should be allowed to take such a massive space which could be used to let some more of the lesser known traders in.
I know it's a commercial event but surely a little more help for the little guy would be appreciated?
cheers
James
-
I hate to say it buddy, its probably down to money and what Wayland are paying to get that space.
It was good to see you all again. It seems we lucked it this year. Perfect timing. Just arrived and walked straight in, no queue. We felt they had posibbly set out the stalls a little too wide apart (I think one of the years previously we complained of the opposite! Never happy! ;)) that could have lead to the feeling of less punters? There was a definite fair amount of trading money for goods going on. I don't know how many times we got hit with peoples backpacks FULL of boxes! ;)
All in all, an excellent day was had.
-

Certainly is, to the tune of several thousand pounds o_o It would be nice to get a more varied selection in.
Good to see you chaps as well, hope you're not too knackered though lol
cheers
James

I organise a similar, much smaller (non-wargaming) event, and this is something that I have always had to think about. I have traditionally had a couple of really big traders who want lots of space so I know it is relatively easy money, however going forward I have made the decision to diversify with new smaller sellers as I think this would bring a bit more diversity. Ultimately I wouldn't have thought that Salute wouldn't struggle finding sellers to fill the gap given that it's the biggest show in Europe, however I'm just speculating.
-
I noticed that there was space around the outside for some smaller traders and was disappointed to find that Word Forge Games weren't there despite figuring on the trade stand plan.I'm no fan of Wayland(is anyone?) and I didn't visit their 'festival' space but I thought there was plenty of space in there for more traders but only the Warlords know the truth I suppose. I have to say though that I thought it was a cracking show with some excellent small trade stands. It seemed to be extremely well attended but yet again the lighting in that place was absolutely appalling. It was incredible to see the difference the moment you stepped out into the central walkway. If they could rectify this the enjoyment from seeing the painted minis would be marked as it's almost dungeon like in there.

Quite, as a fully paid-up contrarian I avoided the massive stalls entirely.

I am glad that I went to Salute in the end. It was a grand show and meeting so many people there I hadn't seen for quite a wile was a treat! Hope to see you all next year at another Salute.
I took quite a lot of pictures of the show if you want to have a look go here: www.wargamesgazette.com

It was an interesting day, and i can only agree with the others, it was a good show and it was pleasant to meet to many people enjoying wargaming.
First part of my journey over here; http://www.chaosbunker.de/?p=9926&lang=en

I am glad that I went to Salute in the end. It was a grand show and meeting so many people there I hadn't seen for quite a wile was a treat!
My thoughts exactly :)
This was the best Salute I've ever had in terms of getting in - I turned up at 10.20 and the queue was gone - I just walked straight in! Astonishing! Well done The Warlords - you've finally cracked it!
As usual, you hear conflicting opinions about numbers. A couple of traders told me they thought numbers were down on last year. A couple of others told me they had been busier than ever and rushed off their feet. It was certainly difficult to get to see some of the trade stands I wanted to. Just too rammed, and after the first couple of scrums, I just give up because I can't hack constantly being barged... ::)
I thought the games were better as a whole this year too. Lots of spectaculars, lots of nice little bijou skirmish tables, and barely a Subbuteo cloth in sight - although there were one or two tatty offerings, where you wonder why they bother. But the count of good stuff seemed much higher than previous years. Hurrah.
