Never played the later editions, but it passes the Duck test: if it looks like Warhammer and sounds like Warhammer then it is Warhammer. Thanks for the battle report!

In my opinion 4th is the best but I jumped in the wagon at 6th so...

I agree, 4th edition is quite nice: it has the rules streamlining and the army books of later Warhammer with the grim setting of 80's-Hammer. For me it is a toss up between 3rd and 4th.
