Ok, so I am looking for some 28mm deer suitable for the forests of the North Eastern coast and the Great Lakes to add a bit of colour and scenic set dressing to my F&IW games.
Any suggestions?
-
Nick,
North Star do a Moose and Caribou. No pics on their site. There was a link about this: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=56235.0
Foundry do some European Deer which could be 'converted'. The old Mega Miniatures range used to have some but can't seem to find who now owns and markets them.
Scenery Express has some generic stuff in O scale which might work.
Looking for some myself so let me know if you find anything better.
-
Moose must be accompanied by squirrel. Obligatory pop cultural reference.
-
I struggled with Deer when i last did the project mate.
Martin at Warbases does some european red deer. Not sure what you would need to do to convert them. He also does some bears too.
For me im not that fussed what they look like. North star do some beavers which i really like.

I saw those and was sorely tempted. Always had a soft spot for beavers ;) :D

Caribou!

Don't we all haha

Irregular have a stag and hind - and a photo of the stag if you scroll down the animal page. Not too bad a sculpt from Irregular which can be uneven, some just sort of slapped together but some quite nice.
-
Try Woodland Scenics (railway O scale):

I have the war bases ones. I will try and get a photo tomorrow in the light if you want?
What is the difference between a north american deer and a European deer?

I did a post on this subject on the Old West board a while back:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=71379.0
Conclusion: The Ral Partha and the Woodland Scenics O scale deer are the most accurate for White-tailed deer, which are the only deer you would find in the eastern USA. The ears are way too big :o on the Ral Partha deer, and the Woodland Scenics are bare-bones sculpts :-I which are rather unexciting.
Is there a sculptor in the house? We could use a line of minis covering white-tailed and mule [i.e.western USA] deer, plus buffalo/bison, elk/wapiti, and pronghorn antelope. Not to mention black and grizzly bears.
Here's a painting guide for White-tails:
Note that their coats change colors with the seasons: the buck is in his winter coat, and the doe is in summer colors. Bucks shed their antlers by February and they start regrowing in April/May. Average length of a white-tail is about 71 inches, and height at the shoulder averages 39 inches, although there is wide variation.
Average size compared to a 6-foot man:

I reckon with a bit of work they could be converted into the White Tailed Deer. An order will be forthcoming. :)

Good to see that you are contemplating the righteous path! ;)
-
I can't say that any of the deer pictured jump out at me as 'Whitetails'. The one in the Ral Partha set just looks weird. The Whitetails around here are a mucky browny colour, with no elaborate markings just a short upturned white tail.

summer or winter deer and does not have such a hurry ;)

If you're interested in a bunch of the Ral Partha deer, I can put you in contact with the guy who runs Iron Wind Metals, who owns the molds. They typically show up at cons in my area, as well as the larger ones in the Eastern half of the U.S. He cast me up a bunch of wagon wheels awhile back, so he may be willing to do up a bunch of the deer. I could use some more myself, so depending on how many you need, I'd be willing to obtain them and then ship them onward to you.
Let me know...

I've sent an email to Jim Fox of Iron Wind Metals, asking if he can cast me up a bunch of the deer. Can I get an idea of roughly how many that people would be interested in? I've been contacted by someone else here in the U.S., too, who's also interested.
I'd be happy to organize the order and then ship it onward. I'm sure we can settle everything up easily enough on Paypal.
I'll let you know what Jim say...thanks!

Hi Mike,
Please count me in for 2 two deer.
Thanks for doing this.
Randy
-
Two for me too please.
-
Two for me if you missed my other post.
-
And two for me please.
-
Hi everyone,
I heard back from Jim Fox, and he said he can definitely cast some up for us. It may not be till the beginning of March, though. He needs to cast a commemorative figure for Cincycon, which is the first weekend in March. He will cast them up when he does those. Or before...so it is a remote possibility getting them earlier.
I count 8 so far posted on this thread. Any more?

Thats great news Mike thanks for sorting this.
-
Hi everyone,
Jim Fox has replied back in answer to a member's question. Only the male deer -- no female molds.
Right now, I have:
Marine -2
Malamute - 2
Flags of War - 2
Hu Rhu - 2
Curt - 8
= 16 from this forum (not counting me and my local gaming group, who are going to order some)
Last call for venison...! lol

Cheers for this Mike.
UK guys are we going to arrange for them to be delivered to one guy and then divided up?

Well volunteered lol
It makes most sense to do it that way :)
-
Hi everyone,
I put in the order today. He is going to charge us $1.75 each. I hope that doesn't scare anyone off. It looks like I will pick them up at the Cincycon convention that I will see him at in about one month. Once again, hope that works for everyone.
I'll then weigh them and look for the cheapest way to mail them to Malamute, and we'll go from there on how to paypal the money and such.

Thanks Mike for doing this.
Randy
-
Great thanks Mike. $1.75 each is fine, no problem with that. Appreciate you organising this. :)
-
Very happy with that price.
-
If it works out cheaper send them to me in Canada and I'll take them across the pond and deliver them to Malamute at Salute.
-
Where are you in Canada? And when is Salute (I know...gasps! Then, "Oh...yeah, he's a Yank...") lol lol lol
Mike Demana

And when is Salute?
April 16th.
-
Mike,
I am considering attending the Cincycon convention on March 5. Could I pick my 8 deer up from you there?
$1.75 each is fine. Thanks for organizing this livestock hunt.

Absolutely! I hope you make it. That is actually where I am getting them from Jim Fox of Iron Wind Metals. So, we can simply snag them together. I plan on arriving Friday late afternoon, early evening, and staying Friday night and all day Saturday. So, we can certainly arrange to meet sometime around then. I am running some Song of Drums and Tomahawks on Friday night and Saturday morning.
Oh, and Sterling Moose: Your plan sounds great. I replied to your PM (finally)...
Thanks, everyone!

-
Mike, did you manage to pick up the deer?
-
Yes, I did! I apologize for taking so long to reply. This is easily the most hectic month of my school year!
I have the deer and they cost $1.75 each. I will mail the ones slated to go across the pond to Pete (Sterling Moose) in Canada so that he can hand-deliver them to one or more of you at Salute. I hope to get to boxed up and a price for postage to Canada, soon. Once I know that, I can divide that cost up amongst the individual deer and come up with a price per fig, if that sounds sensible. The purchasers can simply send that amount via paypal. Any suggestions to this plan? I haven't done this type of thing much, so I'm just guessing as to the best procedure.
Pete, I will need your address, if you'd like to PM it to me. I do thank you so much for the offer to transport these.
Curt, I will also box up yours and give you the postage price to Illinois.
Thanks, everyone, for having patience with me. When I came back from Cincycon, I was inundated with stuff and it just hasn't let up, it seems.

All, I can leave the deer with Malamute or perhaps jimbibbly at Salute. Can you pick your metal mammals up from them on the day?
-
Was reminded of this topic when I stumbled on these Ral Partha beauties whilst searching through the lead/pewter pile yesterday looking for something quite different:
Forgotten I had these...picked 'em up at Origins last June from a vendor that had enormous piles of loose minis. Don't remember how much he charged....it might have been by weight, and it wasn't much!
Good luck with your white-tails, chaps: don't forget to trim the ears and un-flatten the antlers. Or not! :D

Hi everyone,
The deer were mailed the day before yesterday, but I am just now getting around to doing the number crunching. I used the cheapest shipping method to Ontario, Canada, from Columbus, Ohio, for the six deer ordered by the UK contingent -- 2 each going to Malamute, Flags of War, and Hu Rhu. They are going to Sterling Moose, who will be attending Salute and hand-deliver them.
Once again, the price that Iron Wind Metals charged us was $1.75 per deer. Divide the $9.50 shipping among the six deer (I know...I was shocked that was the cheapest way to ship them) and you get $1.58 in shipping each, which means each deer ended up costing you guys $3.33. I'm sorry if this was more than you were expecting. If each of you would like to paypal me that amount to: mikedemana@earthlink.net, that would work. Don't worry about any international conversion fee -- you guys are taking it on the chin enough with shipping.
Curt and Randy, I will PM you with your totals as your U.S. shipping was less, of course.
Hope everyone is satisfied with this.

Barring any postal or customs issues I will distribute the deer at the LAF Meet & Greet which I believe is scheduled for 1.30 at jimbibbly's stand at Salute. I know Mr Malamute but not Hu Rhu or Flags of War so if you could wear appropriate horned headgear ala Hern the Hunter I'll know who to give them to. ;)

I'll be shackled to the Oshiro demo game of Dorset Smugglers all day so come and see me there. I am not sure if Flags of War or Hu Rhu are coming to Salute, so you can leave theirs with me or James. :)

Will Paypal you the funds shortly Mike. Thanks for organising this.
