Title: Massed Aliens?
Post by: Elbows on January 27, 2016, 04:30:24 AM
So, what are my options for a game where I'd need...say 50+ aliens?  Think Space Hulky horde of aliens, kill-them-all bla bla bla.  Looking for my options in plastic or similar collectible alien figures.  I'd like to stay away from GW as they may end up being pictured in some material.

For 28mm games, so 25-40mm is fine.  Plastic would be preferred.  Cheap is ideal, but I'm not looking for rubbery toy soldier figures either.  While I might end up using plastic genestealers or hormagaunts or something, what are my other options that aren't tying to a litigious corporate entity?

Does anyone have stock leftover for those old Defiance Games bugs?

I would look through the cheap monsters from the old D&D, Dreamblade, or Star Wars prepaints.  Some of those are still going for ridiculously low costs.

Kryomek?

Not THAT cheap, but a good solution nonetheless.

Sounds like you and I are thinking along similar lines at the moment.

For price and a useable quality I would suggest the Reaper Bones Kulathi and Bathalians

I've gathered some D&D Ethereal Marauders in the past for a similar purpose. Nicely fitting look, prepainted, and at the time they were very cheap.

I would suggest the Reaper Bones too. They paint up nicely... but might not fulfill your requirements...

I made my own with the cheap dollar store ants.  These are hard plastic, not rubber.

The model is 15mm, but these would still work in a 28mm setting, but smaller bugs.

EMCE do a plastic bag of colonial marines vs aliens - Amazon uk link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aliens-Colonial-Marines-Plastic-Figures/dp/B015R6PUVK/ref=sr_1_1).

I'm sure I saw these in poundland (or some such place) the other week. They are about 45mm tall - blog post with pictures (http://fantasytoysoldiers.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/emce-aliens-v-colonial-marines.html)

You get 35 figures, but I'm not sure how many of each.

The Kryomek look pretty good - more interested in spookier types sans guns.

Heroclix Brood. You'll need to repaint, but I've found them on eBay for about $1 each.

I wonder if there would be some Monsterpocolypse models that would fit what you are looking for.  I'm not sure if you can get them cheap or not, but might be worth a try.

The Marro from Heroscape used to be broken out for stupidly cheap prices, but I think they're finally being scooped up by the devoted. Still worth a look.

Irregular Miniatures' Scorpio-Bugs could look good en masse and are cheap:

Well, this was a Black Friday thing, but I got a set of Sedition Was for absurdly cheap ($18 USD), so maybe if you keep your eyes peeled, something like that may come up again?

Otherwise, Heroclix/Horrorclix/D&D/Dreamblade may be one way to go.

These bugs from Penndraken are supposed to be 10mm but are pretty scaleless.  They are only 1 quid each:

What about Myth Crawlers? $20/10
(http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n183/pinkymadigan/IMG_20140821_191511_35_edit_1408665702700.jpg)

Wild West Exodus Watchers (Greys) are not cheap $36/10 but hard plastic. Most are shown with guns, but there are also close combat variants.

Shadows of Brimstone: 12 Void Spider Miniatures $15/12 (also hard plastic)

Shadows of Brimstone: 6 Strangler Miniatures $12/6 (also hard plastic)

Cergorach wins IMO! Anyone know of UK or EU suppliers for those goodies?

Cergorach, those are far better than the other options so far...seems there isn't a big market for genuine scary aliens...shame.  I'll start poking around.

Check with anybody handling Touch of Evil or Last Night on Earth?

Had a heck of a time finding the FF store entry. I'll see if they're in the distribution channels in the US; wouldn't mind seeing some myself.

Doug

Edit: Game and several expansions are available through Alliance and ACD in the US, but not finding the particular beasties in their own boxes. Might be web store only.

Seperately those SoB minis are webstore exclusives.

The old Starship Troopers plastic aliens (Arachnid) might be a good option if you can find them (they came 20 to a starter box):

You could do some Maelstrom's Edge minis (hard plastic on sprue):

First is the Minnows $6.50 per 2
Second is the Adult Angel $9 each
Only available through the pledge manager if you were a KS backer.

Certainly not cheap, but the winged ones could make for a terrifying Riddick-esque scenario!

Malifaux has some interestingly scarry monsters on sprue, but those could be very expensive to get a horde of 50 of...

Although these are interesting:
Void Wretches $21 for three, I said it was expensive stuff ($15.75 through MM).

Confrontation: Creatures of Dirz - Phemera Alpha Unit Box (8) $12 through miniaturesmarket (OOP)

Now for the bendy Reaper Bones stuff:
All three are $3.99 each, probably cheaper from some online stores (Miniaturemarket $2.99 each)...

$3.29

$2.79 each

This would be quite funny:
$2.29

The advantage of the bendy stuff is price and you can chuck them in a bag.
